This was my first visit to Slovakia, I was pleasantly surprised by its both its beauty and the classic European architecture in many of the towns. The best of Europe without the high price tag of the better know tourist destinations.

Quite a difference in right of way maintenance from Swiss railways. . . But very enjoyable. Thank you!
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 5 жыл бұрын
The permanent way was in reasonable condition, just a little overgrown in places. Swiss railway maintenance is second to none, a tough act to follow. The Tatra Railways do a good job on the budget available, as is the case with many railways around Europe, to increase the maintenance budget would risk many of them no longer being viable. A bit of grass here and there, coupled to a lower line speed is preferable to no railway at all. I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride and I hope you will follow more of my railway adventures.

I am always fascinated by the trains, tracks, and scenery you shoot on your trips. Here the track uses inner guard rails extensively to keep the wheel flanges on the outer wheels from wearing the running rail at the expense of expensive guard rail system and high friction on the backs of the inside wheels. At the beginning the catenary uses two contact wires I assume for heavy power draw because of steep grades and the sharp curves. The catenary tension weights look to be very heavy. The catenary towers of built-up metal. The area looks to have been heavily logged in the past 10 to 15 years. Absolutely beautiful scenery.
@michalmariaosb
@michalmariaosb 5 жыл бұрын
The area wasn't logged, but rather destroyed in 2004 by a powerful windstorm. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m86mrLKDtd_chJc.html. Most of the railroad was passing through dense forest originally, but it will still take decades for the forest to renew itself. It's a sad sight for me now whenever I visit the park. More info about the windstorm here: www.lesytanap.sk/sk/vetrova-kalamita/

Hi Roy, I knew about the Hurricane that devastated the trees in this area, I found this on the internet - www.alamy.com/stock-photo-hurricane-damage-on-the-slovakian-side-of-the-high-tatras-almost-half-16637634.html. Mních s kamerou has confirmed my own information. The tracks and catenary are substantial for our little train, but I guess they are necessary for the regular service trains which are considerably larger and somewhat faster. The scenery rivals that of Switzerland for natural beauty.

It's a very lovely run, but interesting that they don't use any horn when approaching ungated road crossings, and even more interesting that cars don't seem to try and 'race' the train (as is often the case in the UK) in spite of the lack of any gates to stop them from trying! :-)
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed the trip, there were flashing lights at most road crossings although not all. I think the big difference is that the lights don't start flashing 3 minutes before the train arrives as is often the case in the UK, they a more like road junction traffic lights, when they flash the train is only seconds away, meaning to run the lights involves far more risk, but at the same time the wait to cross is minimal.
@MatejGames
@MatejGames 4 жыл бұрын
Well, we dont use any horns here since most of people respect the lights.

Hi Bob, I've experience weather like that Sydney, I think its normal in NZ and the UK, we are well and truly into Autumn here in the England, the leaves are falling, the warmth has gone from the sunshine and the days are decidedly shorter. I haven't posted a video yet this week, I was in Austria filming and I'm only just catching up. I am working on the first of the Longreach videos at the moment, it should be ready for next weekend. Take care. Tim.

Is it my imagination but it seems that speed limits are ignored ? Pretty narrow gauge isn’t it ? I also note that some of these outlying stations have those self generated switching to the loop or branch line (i.e. the first bogey to hit the connector track pushes it into position, probably due to large distances it would require cable to be laid to operate the switch from the signal ‘box’.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 5 жыл бұрын
I think the camera makes the train appear to be travelling faster than was actually the case. The line is metre gauge and the points/switches are sprung loaded, relying on the train wheels to push the blades over, a system used on low speed railways all over the world where the cost of full scale signalling and switch operation cannot be justified. They are set in such a way that the trains will always pass, it only goes wrong if a train inadvertently reverses and I've seen that happen.

Hey Tim. It's been quite a long time since your previous video of Slovakia's Tatra Mountains. I enjoyed the ride a lot. However, why did the train stop a couple of times in between? It seemed like the driver either had trouble with the engine or stopped to admire the nearby flowers.

Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. I am working on a video taken in the workshops at Poprad Tatry at the moment showing narrow gauge trains in various stages of repair and restoration. I will upload it next weekend. As far as can tell the old train we were travelling on relied on clasp brakes acting on the wheel itself. The brakes can be seen in the photo at 40:34 .

Is this design of rail stock Russian in origin ( i.e. not as streamlined compared to Western systems). Initiating a warning before a road or farming crossing seems to by haphazardly applied. There is absolutely no value in applying the whistle as you cross the intersection. (see Sibir).Also the ‘warning’ sounds too much like when the bogies press (screech)against the side rail on the outside of the curve. What is their version of the British ‘Whistle’ warning .

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatra_Electric_Railway en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%A0trbsk%C3%A9_Pleso%E2%80%93%C5%A0trba_rack_railway The 2 links above confirm the rolling stock is either Swiss or Czechoslovakian - Siemens, Stadler or ČKD Tatra. The whistle/horn is similar to a Swiss warning horn, I agree it does sound a bit like a wheel screeching against the rail on a bend. I did not hear a British style horn, just the already mentioned Whistle/horn. The trains are not fast, most likely they could easily stop if a car was causing an obstruction on one of the level crossings.
