The first time I came across this fascinating line I was about 13 years old, I was on holiday with my family and I’d asked the catch a train to Minehead so my parents took me to Taunton where I boarded a long train made up of Western Region Intercity DMS, the train was already full to standing room only as it was a Saturdays only through train from Paddington, most of the passengers were destined for Butlins Holiday Camp. Being young I don’t remember much about the Journey, just the surprisingly long platforms at Minehead. By 1968 I’d subscribed to “Modern Railways” where I read about the impending closure of the line which surprised me as the train I had traveled on had been so busy, apparently most of the weekday trains, especially in Winter were lightly loaded. The line closed in 1971 and the magazines of the day contained photos of the last train followed each month with more photos showing nature reclaiming the tracks, there was some mention of enthusiasts hoping to save part of the line. I visited the line again in 1976 to ride a train to Williton the limit of passenger trains at that time operated by the West Somerset Railway. As the years went by I continued to visit periodically as operations extended back to Bishops Lydeard and on to Norton Fitzwarren on special event days. Today the stations look smart and well cared for as do the locomotives and trains. This railway is a wonderful recreation of a Western Region Branch line serving a busy seaside resort. In this video a camera was mounted on steam locomotive No 9351 to allow viewers to see the line from a view point normally only available to the driver of a diesel locomotive or multiple unit.
The railway is a standard gauge line, (1,435 mm - 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) located in the South, West of England, easily accessible by car or by bus from Taunton BR station served by regular GWR trains from London and the West Country, along with CrossCountry trains services from the North and Midlands.
To learn more or maybe plan your own visit, please click on this link -

Thank you to the staff and volunteers of the West Somerset Railway for their kind assistance in making this video.

Hi Tim! And again a super tuned steam engine. This even sound can be heard very rarely. Nowadays there are only a few locomotive smiths who can adjust a steam locomotive so well. This sound from this machine is beautiful. I enjoy it. Best regards from Hans 🇦🇹🍻👌

KZfaq is a great place to find "Driver's Eye" videos, once only available on VHS tapes or DVD's, they are now freely available here, a lot of people including train drivers have started posting videos over the past few years such as RailCowGirl, dulevoz, TrainJJ and many more, the choice is awesome, I love to watch them.

Hi Robert, saving and keeping this line running is down to a relatively small band of very dedicated volunteers, who willingly give up their free time to undertake all kinds of tasks from track and line-side maintenance to engine driver or any one of the myriad of jobs in between. They are aided by a small number of full employees who bring the necessary business and legal skills to the railway. In many cases the local councils actively back these lines because they bring tourists in who spend money not just on taking a train ride, but in the community as a whole on things like accommodation, eating out and other tourist attractions. It is thanks to these people that the UK has a thriving heritage railway sector. Australia does have some wonderful heritage railways, trouble is they are often far apart as a result of the sheer size of Oz. Take care. Tim.

Hi, I would love to have seen the line back in the days when it was still operated by British Rail using steam traction, although I did travel over the line in a DMU in BR days. I bet you have some interesting memories. Today the line is a real credit to the WSR and just occasionally mainline tours still visit Minehead. I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride.

Hello Keith, this railway is a delight to visit, the stations are well looked after, they are all worth visiting to take a look around and enjoy a coffee and a chat with the station staff between trains. On this occasion trains were not able to run into Minehead due to work being carried out to one of the level crossings between Dunster and Minehead. On special event days I love to arrive at Minehead early to watch the locomotives being prepared for the day. Did you walk the whole line? that's a long way. It's always good to hear from you. Hello, if you do make to the UK, this railway brilliantly portrays the heyday of holiday trains in the 50's and 60's to Britain’s coastal tourist resorts, I was lucky enough to travel on one of those trains before the line closed. Today the railway is a heritage line run by a mixture of paid and volunteer staff who do a first class job in making sure visitors enjoy their day on the railway. This railway is also unusual amongst heritage lines in that it doesn't just serve the stations at either end, all the intermediate stations serve places that are well worth visiting in their own right making it an integral part of the local public transport network. I just visited New Zealand where I saw two ex-South African Garrats in the process of being restored to running order, both will need to have the cabs re-profiled to fit within the NZ loading gauge, I hope I get to see them running one day. I'd love to see some of the engines you mention in action, a trip to South Africa is on my bucket list of things to do before I meet my maker. I'm old enough to remember my mother getting the washing in just before the only regular steam train of the day passed our house when I was a lad. Happy days.

If the opportunity arises, it would be nice to mount a camera on the locomotive and share the view on KZfaq.

@@janinapalmer8368 The West Somerset Railway is one of the few heritage railways where the intermediate stations are well used by passengers using the line to travel to places, rather than simply doing return jounreys over the entire length of the railway. Dunster, Blue Anchor and Watchet are all lovely places to spend an hour or two.

Hello Neil, this is the UK's longest heritage line and it's unusual in that local people use it to travel into town, just as they did when it was still part of British Railways, all the stations are well used with people breaking their trips to take a look around the pretty seaside towns and villages along the way. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Cheers. Tim.

The speed limit today is 25mph, although in BR days it was 55 mph on the fastest stretches of the line.

Running at 25mph max?
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 2 жыл бұрын
I believe the train was limited to 25 mph, something to do with the "Light Railway Order" under which passenger carrying trains run.
