I worked out of Glen Huntley Depot , Many years ago . Loved to drive the W Class trams . Not around to drive anything after . Hated Chapel St on sat morning , but those W class trams were a delight to drive . They had doors , they were good at gentile starts and stops . Really enjoyed driving down Dandenong Rd . Except in Autumn , when the leaves fell on the tracks . Thanks for the memories >

Thanks for your memories. You did not mention your years, but I drove from South Melbourne 1988 to 1994, and got to drive everything there was at that time. We did not share lines with you, apart from St Kilda Rd but I have no regrets that Chapel St was not a line of ours. As for the Ws, the lack of a footrest left me with an aching back after sitting for a while, sore legs when standing after a while. Otherwise they were interesting to drive, especially down big hills like West Preston and West Coburg. And despite their age and doubtful standards or maintenance, it was satisfying to make a good smooth stop, as you say. I suspect that rough rides today are more the driver than the equipment.

@@tressteleg1 I was there from 1974 for 4 years . We had one tram in the morning during the week that went down Kings way out past the zoo .Think it was number 66 . I moved to Malvern depot for 6 months ,then left . Compared to the trams pre W Class they were easier to drive . Sorry to hear about your physical issues . Thank you for the videos . Sure brought back some memories .

A bit before my time on the job, but I was visiting Melbourne once or twice a year ever since 1965 so may have ridden with you. As for my back, it’s a lifelong problem which is manageable. A better cab set design would have made a big difference. All the foot control trams were no problem.

I remember St Kilda junction in the early 60's before the way it is now, trams were controlled by a person overlooking the whole junction and changed points according to which service was about

I almost certainly went through the old Saint Kilda junction on my earliest trips to Melbourne, but not knowing it was about to disappear, took no photographs of it and have no particular memory, but have since seen photographs of the old signal box at the junction. With the introduction of ‘automatic points’ controlled by the tram driver from within the tram, the need for signal boxes disappeared.

The definition of stress: attempting to parallel park in Glenhuntly Road with a tram barrelling up behind you! ;)

Great video, took me back to my childhood as we lived near Kambrook and Glenhuntly Roads and I was watching all the shops along the way. In the 1950s just before you turned into Truganini Road it was a single track to the terminus at Koornang Road.

I’m pleased you found the video of interest from your younger days. The single track lasted until about 1988.

Yes I knew they were tram routes. I have already done Driver’s View videos of the 19 and 96 (Melbourne Tram 96 Traffic Priority) while I have videoed the 58 and 59 but they are yet to be processed and published. The 55 is now 58. A few other routes are also awaiting their turn to be done.

Looked like a beautiful day. Pretty decent spacing of stops along Glen Huntly Road,. Little opportunity for car drivers stuck behind the tram to get past though. Oh well, makes up for all the trams stuck behind cars parking or turning.

Emma S Yes it was a nice day. And certainly at various times one mode does delay the other.

Have you done a video the Darling Road East Malvern terminus? I'd like to see that.

leo regan I didn’t take a lot of video as in those days there was no dream of anything like KZfaq. Nevertheless you may find something of interest in playlists which I have created. Melbourne Trams Trackside & Technical kzfaq.info/sun/PLLtOIHp49XNCObsz5mWdLdTV_rtVoAklq Although I have already put the northbound Rt 1 on KZfaq and you will find it in the link below. I have recorded southbound and will publish that after I have put on KZfaq all the routes I have not covered yet but have videoed. Clarendon St is actually on route 12 which I put on KZfaq recently but it may not yet be in the playlist. I was a driver at South Melbourne for about six years. If you record at 50fps instead of 60, the traffic lights won’t flash
