Nice to see the whole remaining infrastructure of this branch, very cautious driving with the unprotected crossings. It's a single section for the whole line, as there are no loops in between Rapahoe and the junction in Greymouth. The new bridge was just started when I visited the West coast in 2010 and the old wooden bridge over the Grey river was still in use. Now the trains don't need to change direction anymore in Greymouth as the new bridge connects directly in the up direction.

Good to see the Runanga station still there, I worked there in the seventies I switched the trains to Rewanui and Rapahoe and played with the tablets as the station master, all good fun

That's nice, was it you in the short film "Early start"? I'm from the Netherlands but heavily interested in the NZ railways and I'm planning a layout depicting the Runanga-Dunollie section in the mid 60s, and while I have a track plan and enough pictures of Dunollie, it's very difficult to find anything more than a couple of pictures of Runanga station on the web. So I'm curious if you have a track plan of Runanga which you could scan and send to me via E-mail? Or even a sketch drawn up by hand would be more than nothing.

@@Tom-Lahaye Runanga station sat in the middle of a Y intersection, the station had no loop or yard, one way went to Rapahoe the other went to Rewanui via Dunollie (2 minutes down the line) the points had to be manually unlocked a switched, I later turned into a stationmaster reliever and worked all the manned stations on the west coast and Canterbury, starting at Ross being the youngest ever at the age of 17, was not allowed to signal a train until 18

@@NevilleWeavers So the one picture I found on the net showing a loop was possibly wrongly labelled as being Runanga, the station building itself could not be seen on the picture so that one would possibly have been Dunollie. An older aerial picture also shows just a Y, so that is what Runanga always has been. Thanks for your info, from the Runanga station building there are enough pictures on the web to be found as it is still there, so a reasonable representation in model can be made.

Lots of speed restrictions.... Bad visibility at that rail crossing - 2:40- for both the motorist & Loco Engineers. Interesting to note how far back the drivers sound the loco horn from rail crossings.

Knowing as I do, how few times the Kiwi Rail drivers in NZ need to "make any noise" (by sounding the horn before crossings) - seems like someone should alert the Useless BELL DINGING HORN BLASTING people over in the USA, that sounding off so much at EVERY CROSSING THEY GET NEAR TO, as well as BLASTING after the loco is actually ON the crossing? Hey - we KIWI's take notice of ONE single toot. (AND NO RUDDY BELL - ON THE LOCO EITHER) People here know exactly why the sign says, Beware of Trains, or LOOK for Trains, or even Holey Toledo - some ding-a-ling crossing bells (without barriers too). Road drivers here "know" to slow down AND STOP, at any railway crossing here, so why are American's ears blasted to hell and gone with FOUR BLASTS at every crossing, plus a "clanging" old steam loco's bell (on Diesel Locos).. Absolutely no need for the Americans to make such a racket - when it's the road drivers responsibility to stay well clear of ANY TRAIN, on their railway crossings.

Having just rented a car for two weeks in South Island, I am impressed at how disciplined NZ drivers are compared with my native Canada. Perhaps this is partly why the trains don't need to make such a big deal of announcing their presence at crossings.

Looks a less than standard gauge, a not particularly heavy rail.
@ClaxMaxtron

Just a short branch line for transporting coal infrequently so the ruggedness of it is fine. The gauge is the same as the rest of New Zealand's railways of 3ft 6in
