SailGP is high speed, high tech and high impact. This global sports championship combines cutting-edge tech, iconic global venues, elite athletes and record-breaking speeds to create the most exciting racing on water. Rival teams from the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Canada, France, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and Spain battle it out at iconic venues around the world in short, intense races for a total prize pot of $7 million. Teams compete in identical hydrofoiling F50 catamarans that fly above the water at electrifying speeds approaching 100 km/h. Fan-centric and close-to-shore, each SailGP Championship culminates in a $2 million, three-boat, winner-takes-all Grand Final.

Slingsby is the most admirable competitor not just as a phenomenally talented and consistently brilliant sailor and leader but as a human being. It's always highly illuminating to hear his answers, I don't think I've ever heard him prevaricate, or waffle, or play the victim. And I say that as a kiwi. Furthermore, although I would have celebrated a kiwi win, I'm overjoyed for the Spanish. A one race, winner-takes-all Grand Final is a lottery, and I think it's nice consolation that all three teams had a win today: NZ won the season, the Aussies won the SF event, and the Spanish won the Grand Trophy, coping amazingly well with the formidable pressure which inevitably accompanies the w-t-a format (and it was a smart move to let the other two duke it out in the start box)

I was there and that final race really felt very poorly thought out. They built this up so much over the last several race weekends as the big final for a $2 million prize and then you go there full of high expectations and the whole thing is over in 10 or 15 minutes. Whoever rounded the first mark first was almost guaranteed to win because there was never any time for the other two to develop a strategy to get ahead. It would’ve been so much better to have them go around the course at least one or two more times to make this worthy of all of the Fanfare that was built around it I have to say, however, that the two fleet races were absolutely thrilling and awesome to watch

It was was very kind and thoughtful of all other teams to let US team seem like they belong. Obviously they don’t.

Nothing against the Spanish team, but the format of this Grand Final race is the most broken thing I've ever seen in sport. One race takes all in a race format where the first mark rounder usually takes the race is just insulting to those that know the ins and outs of sailing. You could almost predict that the 3rd team will take a lead as the number 1 & 2 teams of the season will focus on trying to take each other out and let the third boat get a jump, which is exactly what happened.

@davidr5597 Non Sailor = landlocked. I figured Aus and NZ would get in a mixup leaving Spain to race away, which is exactly what they did so they have no one to blame but themselves. Then I thought why didn't they go huddle up to Spain and make it a tangled mess = interesting?? Maybe Sail GP needs to go to a 4 boat final - all events next year??

I think the last event should be the season’s top three teams. And first team to three wins becomes the champion.

Agreed. The final(s) should not be reduced to a "crap shoot". That being said, my belief is that the final regatta should consist of the top three ranked crews racing a best of five series over the two-day grand finale event. I believe it would generate a great deal of excitement and interest.

After the first mark the leading boat almost always goes on to win, so they need to make it a match race so that two boats can at least compete for the start without handing the race to the third boat

@@BRSP1022 I have grown to like the format of wing foiling’s medal races. First overall goes in with 2 bullets 2nd overall goes in with 1 bullet 3rd overall goes in without any point. Max 3 races, first to 3 wins is your champion.

Kinda disappointing finish. The season doesn't really mean anything when all you have to do is win a single race.

You don't get in the race without a great season

The format is weird, but it is what it is, Spain made a giid regular season did not blunder in the last event, got in the final and while in there made a better job than the other two. They know they were lucky but they also know that they did their job amazingly well the whole season.

Botin should thank all the French team for crucial mistake in race 4. What they did to DEN team at the last mark was stupid.

$350K for the season points win and $2.2 million for the final race seems a bit skewed.

Format is not right.one race final where two teams can be beaten by a team that won nothing apart from one race. I think a best of seven like the AC might be more fitting.
