I guess I did the smart thing and got off and rode Jeff Davis all the way up to Alexandria. I was navigating mostly back roads from the north of Richmond and onward. I was on I-95 for about 30 minutes last night and knew that I'd be stuck there all night if I stayed on the interstate. I peaced out somewhere between mile marker 150 and 155. Jeff Davis was a life saver.

Just get off the highway in your tesla and go sit for hrs trying to charge it, if you can even find a charging station in a blizzard. Theres not enough pla es for trucks to go. To through that aria. The land and regulations are outrageous and prevents anyone from building truck facilities that are not filled to capacity within an hour of a situation like that. There are no good backup routs for commercial traffic through that aria and most anything off the exits is illegal to trucks except local delivery to keep commercial traffic funneled through the dot stations. The number of truck parking spots in this part if the country compared to the number of trucks that operate through this. Corridor is grossly mismatched. I cannot count the number of twist ups on winter slick roads caused by combinations like the fed ex truck in the front of this mess. Single axle double trailers. Companies that operate this type of combination, have the money and unions if not both to prevent regulation to keep them from operating in certain winter conditions. I drove trucks through that Corridor for thirty years and the auto traffic there is extremely aggressively operated around Trucks, save for miami and Chicago. Not even northern new jersey or New York city are this aggressive. Va has always been slow to bloom on winter roads and this was an exceptional storm. Anyone that drives this aria on any kind of regular basis and looks at the weather should ha e been able to predict this. No room for whining commercial and non commercial should have foreseen this, how fortionate this happened and noone Is dead, only inconvenienced for not looking and planning ahead.

Every winter when it starts getting near freezing temperatures I pack a backpack with a change of socks and underwear a very warm soft blanket, bottles of water granola bars tuna and crackers kits sardines pop top canned fruit and nuts. I do not regularly eat these items other than the water but if I’m ever in a situation like this it’s a nice comfort to have. I have contemplated bringing a butane stove and canned soups or chili, and a small pot, but that is a lot to leave in the car for 3 months. I’d honestly be more uncomfortable with trying to use the bathroom.

Chains are not allowed in VA, nor can trucks make traction where there is none to begin with. I'm sure many tow trucks were there to assist and move cars. @Mickey Farley most people grow out of name calling when their brain reaches the mental maturity of a 12 year old. Again, I watched 3 different news stories. Only one said anything about why it was closed, a jack-knifed truck, and that’s not hard to move. If it was closed because of ice, they didn’t say that. If it was ice, you plow and throw down salt and usually cars can drive over that in a short time, not 24 hours. I live in Colorado, the only time the 70 closes for 24 hours is a serious blizzard. That wasn’t a blizzard.

Police are worthless. Sad but true. When you need them they're always giving excuses as to why they can't do anything.

There were huge warnings from weather forecasters on East Coast before this storm. Did anyone heed the warnings? Many did not. When a crisis happens, get out the Patriot handbook and create a solution, don't rely on the government. In this situation, cautiously turn around your car and head to the nearest on ramp as an exit. That's what we do in Oregon.

Odd ... maybe if more people had common sense they would pay attention to weather reports and had supplies in their vehicles in advance.

I honestly wish they'd quit salting the roads and go back to plow, cinders and sand. If you don't have 4WD..you don't go. I absolutely can not get a car to last 20 years in the Northeast despite my best efforts. And you want to talk about deteriorating infrastructure? chlorides are super bad for bridges, rebar, etc. Where are all the environmentalists concerned with the run off into rivers?
