Up there by “The Jolly Sailor” the paddle boarders appear in their droves. Pretty much like pedestrians walking down the M27 like a bunch of Meerkats wondering what is going on. Usually politeness and a very slow approach clears them out of your way…..

At this point, boating is merely a dream for me. This tutorial lets me know that it is something that I want to do. I want to do the loop. Maybe in about 10 years.

I've never been on a boat, but I now know how to dock one and take it out all on my o ne o. As for the driving, it reminds me of what you do in a car, slow and steady, and be observant, only you're on water and it's bigger then a car.

When I was in the sea scouts. We where taught to never use the wheel. Only throttles until we made into the channel. I’m older. So I know things have changed over the years. Yet I still only use the throttles and thruster. 👍🏼

All well and good John but can you do this in 0 visibility, thick fog, one engine, 100 knots of wind, a hurricane approaching and the fall out of a recent thermonuclear strike clouding your view and giving you radiation poisoning, and very little fuel in your tanks? No! No Sir. Some of the comments on here really are quite funny. Great vid Mr Mendez....I get so much from your tutorials....good to see you still posting.

Great video and love how calm you remain while walking through the process. I never really saw leaving as a challenge, it is coming back in that gets the nerves going. Any chance you can do a follow up for coming back in single handed?

It doesn’t seem to work that way for me.😖 I was taught to center the rudder at the dock and never touch the wheel (use only the throttles) until out of the docking phase. I have a catamaran (12 M Catalac) and no bow thrusters. Does that make a difference regarding whether to use the wheel/rudders at slow speeds?

Not really. It can be done either way but you get into the danger of using throttles when the rudder is not straight ahead, when you think it is. I insist others drive my cat throttles only in a marina or mooring area. Using one engine (the one farthest away from the side you are backing to) into a berth is my usual method, it allows you, in forward to angle the bow to the dock and in reverse to push the stern into the dock. I have the other engine in idle if needed on windy and high current marinas where more speed is your friend. André in Sydney

I once was told by a captain to never touch the wheel when manoeuvring in a dock. Rely only on the engines. Is that correct?

Not exactly impressive. Leaving the dock with the wind holding the boat on the dock is generally quite easy. This would have been more impressive if he demonstrated how to leave a dock solo when the wind is blowing the boat off the dock which involves much more complex line handling skills.
