This is the inside story of 6024's storming performances at the head of the Torbay Express service during the summer of 2008. It started badly. "King Edward I" was stuck at Bridgnorth with mechanical problems, so the unrebuilt Battle of Britain locomotive "Tangmere" had to take over instead. Two weeks later, complete with a new axlebox and rebuilt air pump, the King was being nursed along the Welsh borders to Bristol. There'd been precious little opportunity for running-in at the Severn Valley Railway. The following day's dash from Bristol to Torbay at 75mph would be a case of "kill or cure" for the elderly King.
The train was heavier than usual. Ahead was the fearsome Whiteball bank, plus an equally gruelling slog across the hilly spine of land that separates Paignton from Kingswear. The 6024 Preservation Society was determined that their engine would not fail and they had three aces up their sleeve in the form of a trio of hugely experienced ex-Great Western enginemen. Fears about the King's health gradually slipped away as the 80-year old engine seemed to be getting stronger as the weeks went by.
As of early 2022 the king is on the edge of returning to traffic following a 10 yearly overhaul and is to be returned to the mainline.

Great film, nothing but respect for all the staff. Seeing as this was shot in 2008, and Weston Region steam ended about 1965, a gap of 43 years, that puts steam experienced footplate men into their late 50s at least. Working on steam locomotives, at times, despite the shifts and the grime, must have been the best job in the world. Certainly beats the 45 years of blue collar rubbish I did, and yes, I know what it is to work around the clock and get covered in sh%%.

The truth is that the owners of 6024, are trying to make as much money as possible, by adding extra coaches to the train, the climb out of Goodrington is quite severe, and any wet weather will effect the engines performance, these engines should be treated with more respect.

It's also down to the company which are running the tour as they're the ones incharge of selling the tickets for the tour. 6024's owners provide the loco while the railtour company sells the tickets, plus they requested 6024 for that year's Torbay Express trains.

@@MasterMoyle thank you for your reply, yes, agreed on the rail tour company, but who at the end of the day decided that 11 coaches would be allowed? We lived in Goodrington, Paignton back in the 1980,s and never remember an engine struggling up the gradient from Goodrington to the tunnel, but this also happened last year or the year before, when an A4 pacific engine got stuck in the gulley due to wet rails! So I think we can safely state that it is the rail tour company that was at fault.

It doesn't do an engine any harm to slip to a standstill unless your name is Blue Peter and that was entirely the driver's fault. 6024 is a 4-6-0, a much less slippy type than a 4-6-2. 'Kings' were allowed to take 11 up Hemerdon, much steeper than this, in all weathers and did so routinely. You simply cannot say this train was overloaded.

Unlikely that we are going to see that run again for a very long time as now Didcot has it's other castle 4079 Pendennis Castle running. But with Didcot having ceased any interest in mainline running it's looking very slim that we'll see 5051 run again as Didcot is too small for an engine of that size as it's like having a lion in a cage.

@@MasterMoyle That is so true, It just a shame to see a good loco like it go to waste, similar to 6023

It was that ruddy chimney on 6023 which caused all the trouble and resulted in it not going out on the mainline. It was ok until the reduction in height needed to be done as it was above the 13ft 1in max and the shorter chimney took a massive effect on the draughting. Unlike 6000 & 6024 which have double's, 6023's is a single. Took so long to fix the issues that the ticket had too short amount of time left to make mainline running non viable on it's then valid ticket. Now we might never see 6023 go mainline unless a miracle pops up.
