Driving and Firing - The Western Engines (Part 2)

Жыл бұрынJoin the drivers and firemen aboard the Great Western engines for live footplate action sequences as you've never seen before. A team of Great Western enginemen from the days of steam are reunited with their engines.
Part 2 of the video starts off with the Castle's which were one of the GWR's most produced express engines with 171 members of the class being built between 1923 & 1951. 4073 Caerphilly Castle is seen at Didcot being shunted by 5051 Drysllwyn Castle in the days before it later ended up in Swindon.
Other classes of engines featured in the video include the 4200's/5205's, 4300's, Kings & Manors plus much more.

This has to be the best 'programme' about steam locomotives I've ever seen.... i.e. not just a video but a beautiful visual and calmly informative commentary on the part GWR and it's designers played developing the UK's (including other big four's) best steam locomotives. Thank you David Moyle et al.

As an American, I would say that the Pere Marquette Berkshire has a sharper bark than the Kings. But the Kings are nothing short of amazing.

What a great video. At 68 I'm like a ten year old sitting on the grass slopes of the railway embankment back in 1965 as the Southampton train hurtles past us in Paulsgrove on it's way downtown into Cosham and Pompey. Thanks to you all for such pleasure on the small screen.

5224, used to fire that engine on coal trains from Neath Shed, Neath Jct to Severn Tunnel during 1959.

Glad to see you enjoyed the video and im pleased to see that it's popular outside of Britain too. Would like to visit Germany myself one day but financial issues plus the lack of a passport prevent that. Alas maybe one day but certainly wont be anytime soon.:p

Note GWR contempt for engine men, the seat you wouldn't put into a garden shed. So all Western men stood almost all time on while working.

I could almost smell the Welsh Anthracite coal as if it was yesterday and I was on the end of the platform at Cardiff General. For the life of me, I can't understand why all GWR locomotives were driven from the right hand side! Thanks for another great presentation.

Most firemen - and others, are right handed, making firing from the left side (from right to left) much easier and leaving the right space clear for the driver.

Sturrock had been a GW man and took to the Great Northern the idea of a wide BG (Broad Gauge) firebox. This went eventually into the GN Atlantics.

I drove and fired 3205 on the south Devon railway in 2014

Sad to think that 3205 has an uncertain future now as it needs major work including an almost new boiler alongside a new cylinder block.
