Driving Downtown - Detroit Michigan USA - Episode 27.
Starting Point: Fort St goo.gl/maps/8ySiSisrEYC2 .
Detroit is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Michigan, the fourth-largest city in the Midwest and the largest city on the United States-Canada border. It is the seat of Wayne County, the most populous county in the state. Detroit's metropolitan area, known as Metro Detroit, is home to 4.3 million people, making it the fourteenth-most populous metropolitan area in the United States and the second-largest in the Midwestern United States (behind Chicago).
The Detroit-Windsor area, a commercial link straddling the Canada-U.S. border, has a total population of about 5.7 million.[7] The Detroit metropolitan region holds roughly one-half of Michigan's population.[4][8] Detroit is a major port on the Detroit River, a strait that connects the Great Lakes system to the Saint Lawrence Seaway. The Detroit Metropolitan Airport is among the most important hubs in the United States. The City of Detroit anchors the second-largest economic region in the Midwest, behind Chicago, and the thirteenth-largest in the United States.[9][10]
Detroit was founded on July 24, 1701 by the French explorer and adventurer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac and a party of settlers. With expansion of the automobile industry, the Detroit area emerged as a significant metropolitan region within the United States in the early 20th century, when the city became the fourth-largest in the country for a period. In the 1950s and 1960s, expansion continued with construction of a regional freeway system.
Due to industrial restructuring and loss of jobs in the auto industry, Detroit lost considerable population from the late 20th century to present. Between 2000 and 2010 the city's population fell by 25 percent, changing its ranking from the nation's 10th-largest city to 18th.[11] In 2010, the city had a population of 713,777, more than a 60 percent drop from a peak population of over 1.8 million at the 1950 census. This resulted from suburbanization, industrial restructuring, and the decline of Detroit's auto industry.[4] Following the shift of population and jobs to its suburbs or other states or nations, the city has focused on becoming the metropolitan region's employment and economic center.
The erstwhile rapid growth of the city left a globally unique stock of architectural monuments and historic places of the first half of the 20th century, with many of them falling into disrepair or torn down since the 1960s. Conservation efforts managed to save many architectural pieces since the 2000s and allowed several large-scale revitalisations. Downtown Detroit has held an increased role as a cultural destination in the 21st century, with the restoration of several historic theatres and entertainment venues, new sports stadiums, and a riverfront revitalization project. More recently, the population of Downtown Detroit, Midtown Detroit, and a handful of other neighborhoods has increased. Some other neighborhoods remain distressed, with extensive abandonment of properties.
The Governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder, declared a financial emergency for the city in March 2013, appointing an emergency manager. On July 18, 2013, Detroit filed the largest municipal bankruptcy case in U.S. history.[12] It was declared bankrupt by Judge Steven W. Rhodes of the Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan on December 3, 2013; he cited its $18.5 billion debt and declared that negotiations with its thousands of creditors were unfeasible.[13] On November 7, 2014, Judge Rhodes approved the city's bankruptcy plan, allowing the city to begin the process of exiting bankruptcy.[14] The City of Detroit successfully exited Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy with all finances handed back to the city at midnight on December 11, 2014.
Economy
Several major corporations are based in the city, including three Fortune 500 companies. The most heavily represented sectors are manufacturing (particularly automotive), finance, technology, and health care. The most significant companies based in Detroit include: General Motors, Quicken Loans, Ally Financial, Compuware, Shinola, American Axle, Little Caesars, DTE Energy, Lowe Campbell Ewald, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and Rossetti Architects.
About 80,500 people work in downtown Detroit, comprising one-fifth of the city's employment base.[149][150] Aside from the numerous Detroit-based companies listed above, downtown contains large offices for Comerica, Chrysler, HP Enterprise, Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG, and Ernst & Young. Ford Motor Company is located in the adjacent city of Dearborn.

Detroit's history is fascinating. It's amazing to think that it was the 4th largest city at one time. The old architecture is priceless and its a shame that so many were demolished or destroyed after years of neglect. However I'm glad to see that there is a revival in downtown and a movement to preserve and restore the old buildings.

Greektown is a nightlife district and is very safe... go there on any given night and see how many white people are out there... Detroit has plenty of events that has whites downtown at night as well... Detroit's violent crime problem is mostly between black people who beefing with eachother... New Orleans is more dangerous than Detroit and the French Quarter is much more dangerous than downtown Detroit... yet how many white people are walking around the French Quarter in New Orleans at night???

***** You saying that because you think I don't know that? lol. What does that have to do with white people hanging out after dark? like I said shootings in Detroit aren't random their usually between drug dealers, gangs, domestic conflicts, ect. and a high crime rate doesn't mean every single part of Detroit is dangerous, just like every part of Chicago, New Orleans, Memphis, Miami, Philly isn't dangerous. All of those cities have been in the top 10 as well yet white people still hang out at night in those cities. Detroit is no different.

Have you ever been there? The architecture is spectacular--both the historic landmarks like the Guardian Building and modern buildings like the Renaissance Center. Campus Martius is one of the best urban public spaces in America. The boulevards like Woodward and Jefferson are grand. Works of public art like The Spirit of Detroit and the Monument to Joe Louis are iconic. The waterfront is nicely landscaped. There are many great festivals in the warmer months. It's an outstanding downtown that is becoming increasingly vibrant.

Detroit's truly making a comeback, to see how the city is now compared to how things were in the 90s and early 2000s, downtown during those years was just filled with nothing but empty skyscrapers and vacant lots, now its more lively than its ever been, I truly believe in a few more years that Detroit would start seeing more population growth in other parts of the city being revitalized.

It’s gonna take waaaaaay longer than a few years. It’ll be at least 25-30 years.....maybe even longer. You don’t repair the damage that’s been done overnight. It was too monumental. The occupancy spaces of those buildings are still 80% vacant, and there’s still barely anyone in the city. It still looks like something out of “I am Legend.” A city like this should look like Chicago, in terms of hustle and bustle. It’s nowhere near that.

Very soon the city its self will have all of its professional sports teams all just North of downtown. The only really bad thing about Detroit & Michigan is its high car insurance as per state law. I went to Detroit to visit family about 2months ago and downtown was anything but deserted. There was more than enough traffic and people all over the place. Actually it was more people walking around here than in downtown Houston. The streets seem to be very narrow though.

This video was obviously outside of peak time and events. This looks no different than downtown LA outside of peak hours and events. Like most downtown major US cities it isn't that busy when there's nothing going on. It's about the same amount of traffic and people walking around as his videos in Atlanta, Buffalo, San Antonio, Houston, ect.

Being in California, Los Angeles doesn't really have a very busy downtown. As I said earlier in another comment. Downtown San Francisco is truly pedestrian heavy. I live here so I know, even after peak hours, a lot of people tend to walk the downtown streets. Don't get me started on the horrible grid lock traffic.
@orlandonunez6122

So yeah obviously you never been to San Francisco, if you call what you see in this video "foot traffic" lol. Shit looks fucking dead. Foot traffic is when you cross the street and you bump shoulder to shoulder with people and go left to righty, (which is what happens here in San Francisco)

San Francisco's land area is also smaller than the westside of Detroit alone. SF can't help but to seem alot busier because it is much more densely populated. But Detroit's population density is higher than most of the other cities in the top 25 largest cities in America. But like someone else said, you can't judge what downtown Detroit is like off of one video. Downtown during business hours and weekends are much more lively than alot of other cities I've been to.
