I'm a Wirral based ADI. A couple of years ago, I was driving home, when I came to a pelican crossing. I was quite close to it when it went to amber, but if I'd proceded, it would have been on a red light. I checked my mirror to see a bright yellow police transit van behind me. No blues and twos. So I was certainly not going to go through on red. So I stopped. I was astonished to watch as they accellerated around me. Not on an emergency call. Overtaking on a crossing. On a red light. If I'd had my dashcam switched on, you'd have been getting footage. Arseholes.

Regarding the U-turning truck, if there was no sign indicating 'no u-turns' and it couldn't be considered careless or dangerous, it's perfectly legal, if a little inconsiderate. Traffic lights permit you to cross the signal controlled solid white line painted on the floor and have nothing to do with your right to enter the junction - you still have to give priority to traffic in the junction as it's a hazard.

8:19 "How soon do you spot the pedestrian?" This is a clear example of why you should always drive at a speed that allows you to safely stop within the distance you can see to be clear. If it's dark and there are no street lights, drive so you can stop within the range of your headlights. This cammer might argue he was driving at such a safe speed, but the margin between hitting and not hitting that pedestrian was so small, you could even say he was just lucky not to run them over.

The other thing I'd say is when there is an oncoming car slow down as their lights hide anything behind them (and in this case in front of them as well); I'm about the only person that I know that routinely does this. I'm aware that when I get into a car I have the potential to do huge amount of harm to anyone on my route, the pedestrian would have to really work at it to injure anyone. The sooner as society we can move on to "with great power comes great responsibility" and away from "I have the might, so I have the right" (which is the view of the playground bully) the better.

6:00 I work on the first turning at the very start of this clip. This road is a 40 with LOTS of HGV. That lane the car went into, lorries and HGV dont always stop when they turn up this road. This could have been deadly. Its also right by a construction site with lots of heavy vehicles
@LITTLEbigREG

As a HGV driver myself I'm going to nail that driver in clip 11, that's piss poor. Geldard road, Leeds - if they'd continued straight on, they would've come to a roundabout in 350 yards. If they'd turned right, they would've come to a roundabout in 175 yards. If they'd turned left they would've come to a roundabout in 500 yards. Really, really poor and embarrassing to see - fair enough if you've got to pull a manoeuvre like that if you've missed a sign for a low bridge etc but pulling a stunt like that there is just pure lazy. Edit: after looking on Google Street view there isn't any sign prohibiting u-turns on the traffic lights, however my point above about the roundabouts still stands.

Regarding the lorry making a U-turn at the junction, as you are probably already aware, typically if there is a sign at the any entrance to a junction of this type, they are usually on all entrances. This is due to traffic needing to stop inside the junction due to oncoming traffic having priority, whereby conducting a U-turn causes obstruction of flow and/or view.

As a HGV driver I'm not condoning the actions in the lorry driver clip . However to carry on with the prospect of unknowns such as low bridges , 7.5T weight limits , traffic calming it may have been his / her best choice at that moment in time.
@kassimbabika
@kassimbabika 3 жыл бұрын
He's technically not in the wrong there since his direction has no sign disallowing a u-turn. I can't help but think that if they were worried of those unknowns, they could've used one of the access roads along that road they were on (it's northbound Gelderd Road in Leeds btw) and make a turning inside or around there instead. There is certainly at least 2 maybe 3 that are open/clear enough to be able to see into and know it's possible to turn around in for a HGV. Including one just before that junction. Because that stretch that leads up to that junction from that side is a lot less "busy" with stuff like shops/businesses directly on the road or foot traffic or major junctions (apart from those accesses) - it really is just an arterial to get from a to b for about 3km there with mostly fields around it. And it's far less busy with traffic in general compared to that junction. So, it would seem an odd choice to use the junction instead. I'm no HGV driver though or that experienced on the road with anything bigger than a big SUV so, learning every day and could be missing the obvious.

I was always told as a kid that if you are walking on a country lane or any road come to that without a pavement you always walk on the right-hand side so you can see the cars approaching you where as if you walk on the left hand side you could walk out a couple of feet and the car then hits you and not realising there's a car's coming

The thing is, if you make a mistake on the road, that's OK, but at least have the decency to own up to it when it was clearly your mistake, make sure the other driver is OK, exchange details if there's damage etc. Most people will be understanding if you just admit fault and apologize rather than trying to get out of it by blaming them and getting irate when you both know it was your fault.

Looks like a UK road, a small, narrow country lane maybe, the one road sign I could sorta make out looked like UK spec. Assuming that's the case, the cammer came to a panicked, emergency stop on the wrong side of the road, the other car moved to the wrong side to go around the cammer, the ped' looks like he was on the righthand side, walking towards the oncoming traffic. That being said, he should have been wearing brighter clothing or some reflective gear on that dark, unlit road.

Given how people tend to watch their driving much more closely when police are around, I'd expect them to be extra-aware of people doing things suddenly, those traffic lights being a perfect example. If that car had been a couple of seconds earlier, I'd generally consider it safer to go through the recently changed amber, but many people would slam on the anchors because of the police behind.

5:53 this was exactly the same mistake that I failed my first test on! Mistakenly thinking I was in a one-way or dual carriageway (because that's what the previous three roundabouts had been) and moving into the oncoming lane in preparation to turn right. And just as I spotted the "two-way traffic" hazard sign and was about to correct my mistake, a car appeared in the opposite direction forcing the examiner to grab the wheel.

Regarding that lorry doing a U-turn, he may well have noticed too late that he was approaching a low bridge or something (often due to lack of pre-warning signage). Performing that dodgy manoeuvre is way better than having a bridge strike. I'd do the same if I found myself in that situation.

At 2.15 re the clip of motorcycle hitting pedestrian.. while I agree with Ashley’s comment on cammer stopping I would add... if you witness something try to safely get the reg number of offending vehicle either by verbally saying it within vehicle or get up close with the camera. In this clip the cammer could have moved up to protect the scene if the pedestrian was lying seriously hurt and in doing so got the reg number in case the offender flees. Safety first of course but also think of evidence. Too many times on these video channels we see offenders riding off into the sunset leaving chaos injury or death behind when an opportunity to record reg numbers was missed.

@@DAFPvnk All three other directions have that but not the one they came from. The one to their right (Straight on from the cam car) is a big one too J1 of the M621 is the next junction 200 metres up the road so it is not a matter of them not having the room at the roundabouts.
