Regarding the Cambodian side holding onto your Thai documents- that used to be a common practice at some borders (notably Koh Kong, but there were occasionally even stories out of O'Smach of this happening though it never happened to me at O'Smach, but did occur at Koh Kong). This was to ensure you drove back the same way you came. Koh Kong in particular, wanted to ensure you didn't leave the province (though once you agreed with customs that you wouldn't, there was nothing stopping you from driving to Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville or anywhere you wanted, which I did😂 as long as you returned the same way you came). Since the new customs system has gone into effect, Cambodian customs generally no longer holds onto Thai documents, but since you designated the Poipet crossing as your exit border as well and you spent only 1 or was it 2? nights in Cambodia, perhaps that's why they decided to. I always re-enter Thailand at a different border to the one I exit at for various reasons, hence why, since the end of Covid (I've now done 4 trips to Cambodia by car since end of 2022) this hasn't happened to me. My plan next time is to enter at Poipet and proceed to Laos hopefully. For future trips where I'm only going to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, I might enter and exit at Ban Khao Din or enter at Poipet and exit at Ban Khao Din.

A few more comments, having recently crossed the border by car from Thailand to Cambodia using nearby Ban Khao Din and contemplating using the Aranyaprathet/Poipet border next trip. Firstly, from Bangkok, the drive to Ban Khao Din is roughly the same distance (and involves a similar traveling time) as getting to Aranyaprathet. It's slightly further from Siem Reap, but this is made up by the likely much shorter time you'll be at the border for. Ban Khao Din is relatively new; now its a fully fledged international crossing under the customs jurisdiction of Aranyaprathet on the Thai side and its own independent crossing known as Phnom Dey on the Cambodian side. The Thai side seemed slightly ill informed - suggesting I ask Cambodian customs for permission to take my vehicle across when at the exact same time, 2 Malaysian bikers were entering Thailand. Anyway, there was never any issue. The Cambodian side had a relatively new customs official enter the details of my trip into the system (which had already been uploaded by me the day before) after which he printed out the form. This took him a while as he had to call his supervisor every 2 minutes. Note that he only gave me the 3 days I said I'd be in the country for. I should have put down 20 or 30 days, just in case. All other borders would give me 30 or one time I even received 60 days. That being said, I was able to extend the permission using the app, when I wasn't able to return to Thailand on the last day due to bad road conditions between Sre Ambel and Koh Kong. However, the Thai side only put down 3 days as well, so I was fined by the Thais for arriving back a day late; a mistake that I had originally made on the Cambodian customs app, as they went by what Cambodian customs gave me. Again, new border, which rarely sees any vehicles and relatively few people crossing in general. My suggestion for future reference is to use Ban Khao Din at least for returning to Thailand. It's so much faster than Poipet and I recommend this border especially if you have passengers who are non-Thai citizens.

Really great video and it shows it is a bit of a hassle and requires preparation. I did not hear you say anything about options to park your car on the Thai side and walk across the Poipet border. Did you see any guarded parking lots? There are cheap taxi services on the Cambodian side, I read from others.

This is really a fantastic video. I've driven into Cambodia many times, using either Chong Chom, Hat Lek or Ban Pakkard to cross into Cambodia and Aranyaprathet, Hat Lek, Chong sa-ngam, Ban Pakkard and Ban Laem to cross back into Thailand by car. I knew you could now cross into Cambodia from Thailand at Poipet, but haven't tried it yet. I plan to use Poipet or nearby Ban Khao Din, which is confirmed to be the 7th international crossing between Thailand and Cambodia in the near future for driving into the country.

Glad you liked it. Driven in via Chong Chom many a time, and always exited via Poipet - so nice to do it the other way. Thanks for the tip on the IDL. Yeah, so much about ASEAN recognition (haha) but the big thing for me was also getting insurance from my Thai insurer. Super happy about that.

@@tima1359 Yes. Hat Lek is very straightforward, especially on the Thai side, but even the Cambodian side is pretty easygoing these days.

@thaicitizenship I just drove in via Ban Khao Din recently. Aside from the minor hassle of having to sort out my missing customs form from my previous trip nearly 5 months earlier at Ban Pakkard, all went well. Ban Khao Din is roughly equidistant from Bangkok and is under the jurisdiction of Aranyaprathet, 50km to the north. On the Cambodian side, it's marginally longer to Siem Reap compared with Poipet, but you'll make up some time given the very small numbers of people who cross there.

I've now used all Thai-Cambodian border crossings to cross either in or out of Thailand by car. Chong Sa-ngam I've used to re-enter Thailand as well. I noticed in my original comment, I stated that I crossed back into Thailand using Chong Chom. This is incorrect; I meant Chong Sa-ngam. I've exited Thailand at Chong Chom several times but never re-entered there.

One thing I'd like to add - there seems to be some misinformation going around in a LINE group I'm in suggesting Aranyaprathet only allows Thai citizens to drive Thai plated cars out (at that and a couple of other borders). In reality, it appears as though Thai customs is merely preventing Cambodian citizens, who happen to own Thai cars from taking them across the border. This, however, does not affect anyone else, only Cambodians. This rule is unfortunate, if confirmed. It seems Thai authorities only want Cambodians to drive Cambodian plated vehicles into the Kingdom.
@ThePatriot-gm1fg
@ThePatriot-gm1fg 5 күн бұрын
I have 2 theories as to why Cambodians are reporting issues crossing into Cambodia using vehicles registered in their names. 1) some of them are effectively not returning the vehicles to Thailand and customs has noticed this. 2) there may be a rule (even if not officially published), similar to a rule that applies to Singaporeans and permanent residents living in Singapore, which prohibits Cambodians bringing vehicles registered in a foreign country (in this case, Thailand) into Cambodia for the purposes of tourism. Singapore only allows Singaporeans and PR holders to drive Singaporean registered cars or motorcycles in and out of the country. Only non-resident foreigners, such as Malaysians, Thais, Australians etc., can drive Malaysian or Thai plated vehicles into Singapore.

Great and useful video - thanks :-) Two questions: 1 Do you know for how long you can stay in Cambodia with your car? Is there any limit? Can you stay in Cambodia for 1, 2 or 3 months for example? 2 I have heard that you are not allowed to have dark film on your car windows in Cambodia. Is that true? Was that an issue for you? Cheers Martin :-)

Thanks - glad you like it. To be honest, I didn't pay much attention to the time limit, but 30 days seems to be the number I recall. As for tinting, I have dark tinting and they didn't care. There were certainly darker tints there on local cars. I don't think you've got anything to worry about on that front.

30 days is standard. However, Thais may only be given 14 days since that's the visa free allowance they receive for Cambodia. Thais with visas in advance should be granted 30 days.

@@thaicitizenship I am in the process of trying to organise all the pre preparation before driving my car over the hat lek/Koh Kong border crossing. I cannot find the Thai temp. export/import forms online - been trying for 30 min + (they are not on official thai customs site). Also may have difficulty obtaining insurance for driving in Cambodia. My own Thai company - roojia do not cover. I am now trying a Cambodian Insurance company but uncertain at the moment whether they will provide (the information that they asked for was provided but they will not grant as its all 'thai' related). Any assistance would (as usual) be greatly appreciated. Cheers - James UPDATE: It would appear I cannot get insurance cover from a Cambodian company - what do others do to overcome insurance issue ? Roojai will not cover me.

Great informative video - thank you. A couple of questions. I plan on visiting Kampot on a regular basis. I have rented a house there and planned on shipping household items from my condo in Jomtien to Kampot. I would use the Hat Lek crossing. I have a full uk driving licence and a thai licence - which one would be best to use ? Do you have to pay a fee for each day you have your car in cambodia ? Are there any restrictions on which provinces you can visit ? Is there a time limit on the number of days you can have your car in cambodia ? Were there any 'fixers' at the border offering to assist you with the paperwork/forms for a small fee. Did they search your car for items you may have to pay duties on ? Thank You James

Hi there. So the answer is ‘no’ to most of your questions. I crossed at Poipet and I can’t recall if I was given 15 or 30 days but it certainly wasn’t unlimited. Remember to the Thai documentation only lets you temporarily export it so there is a time limit there. Thai license probably best as the Cambodian system recognises it.

@thaicitizenship - thank you for your response. Yes 30 days max from what I have researched online. I am moving property from.my thai condo in Jomtien to Kampot where I have rented a house for 12 months. My plan was to ship as many household items and general stuff like bicycles (3), fishing equipment etc etc - when I came across your youtube video post, I thought 'great', I will take my car on 3/4 trips from Jomtien to Kampot. My main issue is finding suitable insurance which appears to be a requirement. I appreciate you mention that you got a short-term cover with a Thai company - maybe I will try that company but suspect a non starter for long periods of you to 14 days. I have now decided to fly to cambodia as I need to be in Kampot asap. So my main hurdle is insurance. I wonder how other travellers from thailand (apart from you) manage to get insurance cover - any ideas ? I also mentioned that I could not find the Thai form online - did you get yours online or at the border ? Thanks again.

@@tima1359 for crossing at Poipet, I recommend you just wait till you get there and fill them in. I printed them out before (available from my website) but they asked me to use their own forms, which just wasted alot of time. For the Cambodian side, you can do your online registration before you leave. That saves alot of time too.

No, not permitted but you could take a Lao registered rental car from AVIS Lao across. Be aware that there are now some issues taking a car not in your name into Cambodia BUT if it's a company vehicle with power of attorney (which a rental car is) it should be OK. Just that no Thai rental company (other than maybe a small local one with which you have a good relationship) would be able or willing to do it.

@thaicitizenship Yes, I've done the same. Driven their cars to Bangkok, twice and Mae Sot as well. At the time, I rented them for business purposes, as I required a vehicle, which could travel between countries to transport my goods. I also drove into Vietnam, but the second time, at the same border, I was refused entry, despite possessing a Vietnamese driver's license, power of attorney document from the company and my Vietnamese friend with me who could have had his name put on the temporary import documents wasn't good enough either, despite also possessing a Vietnamese driver's license and being a local. That was more than 11 years ago, though. The last time I rented from them was last year in Laos. While I drove my vehicle to Laos, we decided to catch the train from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang, where we hired a vehicle during our 3 day stay, rather than tackling the badly potholed road between the two towns in my vehicle during the rainy season. Joe Rumble, owner and founder of AVR, which is a licensee in Laos (and Cambodia) of AVIS, told me many times his cars were often refused entry into Cambodia. These days, the problem tends to be Vietnam, rather than Cambodia.

@thaicitizenship Just noticed my comment disappeared. Yes, I've also rented through them on numerous occasions and have driven their cars back onto Thailand as well, using them for business purposes. I successfully drove to Vietnam once but the second time, at the same border just 8 months later, was refused entry due to a made up rule suggesting only Lao citizens could drive Lao plated vehicles into Vietnam. My valid Vietnamese driver's license, that of my Vietnamese friend and his presence and a power of attorney document from the owner of the firm, Joe Rumble, didn't help.
