Driving gimbal motors with moteus

You can now drive gimbal motors with moteus with no soldering required. The torque control isn't perfect, but it still works for many applications!

Awesome. Been following your project for a while and thinking of using your controller for a gimbal project. Btw, in case I have to use a geared motor for higher torque, does the Moteus support an additional encoder feedback on gear output? Thanks.

The mj5208 is white labeled, although it was also not present in this video.

This is using the on axis magnetic encoder integrated into moteus, with a diametrically magnetized magnet glued to the axle of the motor.

Yep, although the moteus-n1 has better support for hall encoders if you need that. You can see an example in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l5mFdJmq3-DLm3k.html

Can you show me how to measure the current pulse from the oscillocope? Where do I need to wear extra straps?

Nope, it has a magnet attached to the axle and is using the magnetic encoder built into moteus.

@@awesjosh thanks for the quick reply. So if I were to plug my own encoder into the Moteus, is the setup easy or does it present additional challenges? For my particular use case, I have a motor with a hollow shaft and I cannot have a magnet in it or even have the PCB sensor sitting behind the magnet.

The latest version of moteus has a yet-to-be-announced feature to support external encoders. However, the only ones currently supported are on-axis encoders. Thus moteus would not be usable in that application without firmware development.
