They have much better awareness of where they are, which kind of obviates some of the need for strict rules. Americans have the ham-fisted "ME FIRST" road-rage attitude and would make a warzone out of their roads without strict policing. (Horns in the above video are not from pissed people, they are used as normal signals for communicating intent to move and position to other drivers, and people on the street - e.g. since in many cases, esp. on streets where traffic is at low speed you still have people and vehicles intermix, heck even on some of the very broad walkways that are common in these cities it is common that some vehicles will find extra thoroughfare, as well as the presence of many light vehicles like electric bikes and rickshaw; a horn is used to signal to the pedestrians.) If you notice they generally seem to be "feeling out" each other all the time. If everyone is looking out for each other like that you can actually do fairly well. I've heard though it's still not as safe as a really well-disciplined driving regime but the part that shows there's something here is the fact that they can do this all the time and not crash far more often. It really makes one question as to just how many strong rules you really _do_ need for optimum traffic safety (i.e. better than both China and US roads) when you have people who are actually more in tune to each other and one of the things I note about China is that when you're there it really feels like you have a society there, not just a bunch of slaves to the system. Sure strong rules curb abuses but at some point they become rigidity, when life and the Universe are fundamentally dynamic and organic (something more appreciated in the Chinese philosophical outlook than the Western one.). People seemed to laugh and have more fun with each other, they really looked like they enjoyed life more and this is not something of which it seems they are unaware of - e.g. there are words in the Chinese language like ReNao, "Hot Noise", which refers to the sort of lively border-of-chaos of this type in settings related to festivals, parties and gatherings and thus shows that this general spirit is recognized as a real thing. (Though not all Chinese like hot noise! Just as not all Americans like generally accepted things in America.) One of the things I note about the US is the insane readiness to use the court system to handle _all_ disputes which results in many ways in having less freedom for everyone. It's said that Chinese culture favor the rule of man while the European culture favors the rule of law; in my mind the ideal is some balance of the two to curb the excesses of each. You need strong laws to keep the leaders and the powerful of a nation in check, but also room for diplomacy for the everyhuman, the little peep, so as to avoid dehumanizing automatism and awful scenarios like the one I heard of where a judge really wished that he could have expunged a conviction record for someone who made a recognizably valiant effort to turn himself around and said that person would have been more deserving of it than anyone else he'd seen, yet was not allowed to perform that expungement procedure. I think that China really gets poorly represented in the western media and that maybe about 85% of bad press is due to biased and in some cases outright propagandistic, agenda-driven reporting (e.g. the constant harping on "human rights" and how China _never ever_ gets the benefit of the doubt, it's insane. Propaganda really rules the world; every nation on Earth is guilty of it just as they're all guilty of crimes against humanity at some time or another in their histories. It's not good but the point is not to use it as a way to exalt oneself/one's nation above other nations and peoples and thus strum up the conditions for war.), and only 15% due to actual problems in China and even there the actual nature, content and context of those problems is often not well understood by the outsider much less how to do anything to better them that would _genuinely_ help and not cause unintended harm from misguided but well-meaning actions. Be _careful_ to _do the legwork_ before trying to "help" in a foreign country. Make sure you know what the hell is really going on there first. Make sure you really have an idea of the actual problem and what it is really about versus any emotionalizing propaganda pap you may have been fed. (E.g. videos showing Africa as nothing but starving, hungry kids - that is PROPAGANDA. No it doesn't mean there _aren't_ actual starving people but it paints the picture that life across the whole continent is _ALL ABOUT_ starvation and that's just plain not the case and if you want to "help Africa" actually one of the best things you can do is go contribute to the economy. Buy African product, if you have useful jobskills or talent _get a fucking job_ in an African country and work for an African boss as yes the Black Man is yo boss Whitey.) (And here's another one for 'ya. It's true that China's government runs a heavy censorship regime for the Internet and media, but believe it or not Chinese protest things all the time and in fact there are more protest in China than in the US _AND_ when it happens the government officials are _more_ likely to listen, not less. They will wipe the records from the Internet but they will actually do something about the concern. The thing you can't protest for and they won't listen to is demands to overthrow or depose the government, like in favor of "western democracy" which interestingly shows itself to not be so, erm, democratic, in this regard.)

It's not really hard to believe. They have about a billion more people than we do in the US. It actually shows you how poor some people in China actually are if they have a billion more people than we do, and their economy is only just about getting as large as ours.
