I love this! I plan to visit Madeira next year and I've always been scared driving in a different country but this seemed natural to drive in Madeira because I live in the US and drive exactly the same way. The only thing I'd be scared about are the narrow roads near cliffs haha

Can't wait to drive there. I learned driving in the Alps, we have some steep roads here, but roads on islands can be pretty crazy too. Remember one road leading down to a lighthouse on sao Miguel last year. Man I'm so happy I parked the car somewhere on the hill and walked down to the sea.

We've lived all over the world and change back and forth all the time. BEST way to think about it - anywhere in the world - is to keep oncoming traffic on the driver's side. Easy to keep it straight that way.

"The wrong side of the road" (2:00) That was my problem in England. I went to Teignmouth in Devon to improve my English as a Hamburg schoolboy. Big problem with the bicycle. A lot of times I appeared on the right side. For my luck, nothing happened, there were barely cars in the (at the time) little village.

After driving a fiat in Madeira on those roads, I believe In my driving capabilities more than ever. Beautiful island, very scary roads

I just got back from a week long holidays in Madeira. I rented a car for a 6 days since I was staying in Ribeira Brava(it was actually one of the hostels up in the "mountains" - about 10min drive from the bottom). I 100% agree with the roundabout driving, I admit I got it wrong a few times but the other thing that people should be aware of are the short merging lanes on the "freeways". Some of them are very scary when the traffic is heavy. You gotta be ready to go full on and even push yourself in sometimes... Steep hills are fine just stop at the bottom and go on the first gear or switch to second if the car can handle it... Another thing is to leave the car in a gear when driving downhill. I think they tell that to people when renting the car but I've seen some rental cars to go crazy on brakes downhill. Rev matching is useful as well. Anyways I highly recommend to rent a car to anyone visiting Madeira as it gives you freedom and most importantly time to arrive at busy locations before the masses and buses with large groups come in... One small tip: if you can, get a car with raised chassis if you are planning to go to the mountains and get a more powerfull car or buy better gasoline at the gas stations, trust me - their will be moments every pony is good :D PS: the roads are fairly good, you can't expect the backroads to be in perfect condition plus all the main roads actually are in nearly perfect conditions. I was pleasantly surprised :)

Great video! The weirdest thing about roads in Madeira, to me, is the lack of entry lanes at various spots on the highway, especially around Funchal. I witnessed some dangerous situations caused by this.
