Join me on my dumb adventure.
The trabant is a 2 cylinder, 2 stroke power house (20 horsepower) and was created under the iron curtain of the Soviet Union in the GDR, German Democratic Republic. I struggle to understand the huge following behind these to begin with, but as my ownership goes on I start to like the little green machine

If you want to fix the heating on the trabant, you have to Connect the flexible pipes correctly: one goes from the exhaust right to the "banana shaped" heater and the other one needs to go from the the engine cover to the front muffler. You have connected the heating outlet to the other heating outlet, so you are pumping hot exhaust air diretly to the engine cooling, thus the engine is overheating all the time and might result in engine damage!

Yeah true! "worst car".. He just dont know how to maintain it or bought a areleady damaged one. Its very reliable. The "shit box" trendy word is wrong here. Its an old slower car but not a bad car at all. The most of them back then didnt going to sit or into scrapyard because of it died.. After the Fall of the wall every DDR Bürger wanted a west side car so they let them die. He should just keep insulting the car so the value wont go up faster ;)

The oil mixture is 33:1 for pre '84 models, post '84 runs on 50:1. With that amount of smoke, plus destroying spark plugs every 100 miles means wayyyyyy too much oil in the fuel. Mine makes hardly any smoke at all, just a little on a cold start that's all.
@NaoPb

I figured it had to do with the air/fuel mixture. But too much oil makes sense too. Certainly when it smokes like that.

@@NaoPb Having spent much of my late teens rebuilding and using 2 stroke motorcycles and mopeds, it's a common problem. My Trabant was driven from Bulgaria to the UK, but I have no idea if or how many times it may have broken down. Too much oil in the mix will wreck a spark plug in mere minutes!
@joelthorstensson2772
@joelthorstensson2772 4 ай бұрын
Forgive me for not understanding the ratio, but for every 33 litres of fuel (using as an example), you add one litre of oil (on pre-84 models)
@neilfoster814
@neilfoster814 4 ай бұрын
@@joelthorstensson2772 Yes, but it has to be in proportion. 10 litres of gas needs 303ml of oil, 18 litres of gas needs 545ml of oil. You can't just add 1 litres of oil for every 33 litres of gas used. The oil must be added at the same time as the gas in the right amount.
@MK69303
@MK69303 2 ай бұрын
That's wrong in so many ways. First, it's 1:33, not 33:1. And they have already changed it to 1:50 in 1974.

Don't forget to shift into neutral anytime you let off the gas in any gear below 4th! The Trabant only has free-wheeling on 4th gear and, being two-stroke, only gets it's oil lubrication from the oil in the gas....but if you're not ON the throttle, that means no lubrication unless the engine is idling in neutral!

DO NOT FORGET: use 2 stroke premix 50:1 (petrol:2 stroke oil). and DO NOT let off the throttle in ANY gear except 4th (4th has a ''freewheel'' that allows the engine to idle when coasting). when braking: always push the clutch pedal. this is to prevent the engine from seizing.

Drove a 50 year old American car with a dodgy carburetor, engine stalls accelerating from full stop unless I stomped the gas pedal more, not bad until I am close to home and encountered a stop and go traffic on hot June afternoon and the car vapor locked on me! Since the fuel gauge is inoperable and I have no long stick to measure the fuel level, I falsely believed I ran out of fuel.

60 with one cylinder? That's basically raping the engine... mine only could go like 20 or 30 when I've lost spark in one cylinder, and only gone for maybe 1 km until I've reached my workplace, not 200 kilometers... no wonder it gave up. And if the spark plug thread is fucked, you'll probably need a new engine block anyway, or maybe it can be mend by a thread repair specialist. Btw it's 26 hp, and not Soviet at all. It's not that crap, you just bought a cheap rundown one that's been neglected for quite some time. You're expecting miracles here from an almost 40 year old car with technology from the '30s that wasn't maintained properly...

I am Hungarian and I find these Trabant vlogs especially amusing! Dying to see the next part!! Scotty, I checked your Trabant's license plate in the Hungarian road registry, and it says it has been temporarily withdrawn from traffic; additionally, the MOT has expired in 2020. (Wich means your trabant is not street legal right now) Are you aware of this? I hope you did not get in any trouble. Normally, if exporting a vehicle from Hungary, an export plate should be used, or no plate, and a trailer :)

Woah congrats with your new Trabbi, you even have one with the old style dash! I'd recommend for you, whenever you buy the plastic edges for your bumper, to drill a hole in the bottom through the metal lip and put a locking pin in there. They get lost way too easily hahaha. I know people who still use these as daily drivers, I only use mine daily from mid spring to mid autumn... its still 10k kilometers a year or so :P. Mine's from the very last production year, 1989, so it's as good as rust free still. If you take good care of it according to the book, they're very cheap to maintain and incredibly reliable cars. Have a lot of fun with it, and use common sense! I noticed, especially the English Trabant forums tend to be quite severe echo chambers shouting some really weird stuff.

with a well serviced trabant it is no problem to drive a distance like this. Most people (so you too) are buying the deadest corpse and think they are reliable. That's kind of a mistake. This was a fun video adventure to watch. The estate wagon must have had a longer wait time to purchase when new. When a BMW factory was scheduled to be built in the Southern U.S. the BMW club purists used the Trabant to poke fun at the new factory. They had an industrial cooling fan aimed at a Trabant and said this would be the quality of car they would make and this was the new factory "wind tunnel" test. The car I had that would cause me these types of road problems was an Austin Healey Frog Eye Sprite

I know this is among the worst automobiles ever made but how does it EAT 2 spark plugs every 100 miles? Ar they black? Are they melted? What Gas/Oil mix are you running? Also looks like youll either have to find a new head or a guy capable or drilling new thread so solid that it withstands the compression. Youd also be running two different spark plugs at that point.

You bought an unkempt car in Hungary. The Trabant is really run-down. You would have been better off buying a well-maintained Trabant in Germany. Then you wouldn't have any trouble. Alternatively, you could take the vehicle to the former GDR. They will fix it up for you there so that you can enjoy the Auro. Incidentally, have an electronic ignition installed, which was also available for the Trabant. Then you no longer have to change and adjust the ignition contacts.

Thats kilometres, not miles. Apparently the engine design was faulty (It was a Rover V6) and had piston sleeves that went wonky after a while. Apparently cylinders won't go up and down in wonky cylinder chambers. This ain't that rare a story either, there has more recently been issues again with Kia Cerato/Hyundai i30 cars having engine problems.

Condition of that thing is horrible. So don't be mad that it breaks every 100 miles. By the way you put too much oil into the patrol that's why problem with spark plugs and smoke.

It was traditional before the wall came down to kick these , hard, wherever you saw them , everyone kicked them in west ! When the wall came down the habit did not die away … we ended up with a Tatra v8

How can you even stand to sit in it for longer than 15 minutes with the engine running. Thats how long I test drove one before NOT BUYING the car. And I went home with the biggest headache ever

Back in the 60s, when this car was introduced, it was up to date and had a pretty modern design. Too bad, that the communism party has not allowed any improvements. One fact is the payload of this car. It weights 660kg and has around 380kg payload. That is a pretty good rate, and it drove quite well also with a bit more ;-).
