Driving On WA SR-539 North/South In 1985 (Bellingham)

Back in 1985, The Washington State Department of Transportation drove North/South on SR-539 and recorded video to document the highway. This was part of a project that photographed/videotaped the states highways every couple of years. This video now resides at The Washington State Archives who were kind enough to share it.

Oh my gooodnesss. Thank you for this. I caught a glimpse of my Great Grandpa and Grandma Birds house. On the corner of Guide and Laurel.

Wow!!! Who else remembers Mooneys on the southeast corner of the Guide and Bakerview!?! Of course, it didn't say the word "Mooneys" on the building, just a large wooden silhouette of a quarter moon with a face in it and an apostrophe "eys" next to it. Brilliant! The craziest home residence turned seashell and craft boutique with resident cats that caused an overwhelming stench of urine to assault your senses when you walked in through the door...😖🤯

In 91 my new wife and I bought several hundred purple and green glass beads from there to make a retro beaded curtain to separate our living room from our kitchen.

Thanks a million for posting these!!! I worked on SR 539 when WSDOT widened it from Horton to Ten Mile Road (first phase) and north from there to Fishtrap Creek (second phase).

Viking Twin theater, telephone booths, old cars... this video is making me nostalgic. I grew up in Bellingham, lived there from 1974-1993 and 1996 to 2001.

I grew up in Whatcom County, but I'd left the area before this was filmed. And yeah, you could expect to get stuck behind farm equipment fairly frequently. Sometimes it was me driving it.🙂

It's almost exactly the same haha. My mom is driving around somewhere pregnant with me. Although she probably wasn't on the guide much.

Wait. I don't get it. Why does the Guide look somewhat pleasant to drive in this video? It's a nightmare 100% of the time. What a change Meridian has gone through. Wow.
