Driving Shoe Review: Are Piloti Really Any Better Than A £25 Lonsdale?

In today's video we are doing something a little bit different - I'm talking about shoes! Specifically, Piloti's line of driver focused shoes. I treated myself to a pair of their Racing Green Avenue line, which retail at £160.
My ordinary "driving shoe" is a £25 pair of Lonsdales, which the internet loves to mock me for - but is the Piloti actually any better? Today I talk about what I think they do right, and what they do wrong.

Very interesting video! One thing that you should mention the make drivers loafers. I still have a pair of 25 year old Gucci driver loafers that have the flexible bottom and they're perfect driving my Volvo 1800 e. I have even bought a couple other El Cheapo drivers loafers that worked pretty well. Anything with a stiffer bottom or a risen heel does make it a little bit more difficult for sporty driving. Keep up the great videos and stay safe!

Great video. I use Puma Future Cats (which I didn't wear for about 10 years and found them on the attic, almost new, coincidentally) and a pair of vintage Hogan Olympia sneakers when I'm cruising my 991 or my old Jags and Mercs. Thought about Sparco shoes and car shoes, but never tested these.

I had Adidas Tuscany Goodyears back in the day - like your Lonsdale's but the rear of the sole curved up the back. Crucial for nicely pivoting on your heels whilst dancing on the pedals. Puma Speedcat Sparco's seem the closest nowadays. Good video!

Took a punt and bought some Lonsdales. They have made a big difference. Previously, I have never, ever, felt safe enough to drive with shoes on. Thanks for the recommendation. Any one in my postion should seriously consider giving them a try. The only drawback - as they are cheap - is that they slip off the pedals when the soles are wet. I might try keeping a pair in the car to avoid this.

Well I enjoyed this video far more than I should’ve, brilliant James, now I need some Lonsdales 😅 although I don’t have the pedal box issue (drive an auto) I still like pedal feel, I’ve never ever considered my “feel” before, size and comfort yes, but not the feel from the sole

Piloti have changed over the last few years. The best proper driving shoes for me are the Piloti Sebring. I'm on my third pair, actually buying old stock from the USA. I don't think they do them anymore after rebranding. They have a proper rolled heel, narrow fitment with super soft pig skin leather lining. The soles are initially a bit stiff but wear in nicely.

I've used Pumas and Sparcos for years. Driving shoes make a bigger difference in competitive disciplines which are really sensitive to pedal inputs like sim racing and karting than they do in most street-driven cars, but I do recommend picking some up if they're at a reasonable price. When people say that you're "missing out on detail vs. a regular shoe", that's correct, but it's mostly things like the ABS/lockup threshold in braking (again, only really applicable in sim racing/track driving where you will actually be reaching the lockup threshold regularly).

Great topic! No one seems to care about shoes. The best all-round driving shoes for me are the Puma Repli Cat Mid. I first got a pair of those in 2005 and have been hoarding those excessively the last couple of years so now I have 7 pairs of those - plus 4 pairs of the low version. They are perfect for a narrow pedal box and give lot of support as well when walking around thanks to the hi top with the strap across. Earlier this year I was lucky to aquire a set of custom Puma Speedcat Pro/Evospeed - exactly like those worn by F1 drivers. In terms of daily practicality they're pretty useless, but behind the whell you'll never get as good pedal feedback as those. They are like wearing socks essentially... and only weighs 210 grammes each.

Best driving shoes I've found for my Lotus Elise Turbo are "brand: Plae .. Design: Prospect". They remind me of old Van's with a narrower footprint perfect for the tight pedals in my Lotus, and look great stepping out of it, good for walking, etc.

What direction do you suggest for a car with a pedal box that is a bit more spread out? i.e. brake and pedal too far away to blip without an old fashioned turn of the foot and heel. A Skater shoe like a DC perhaps?

I use sparco shoes, they’re great. No weird lip around the sole (I’ve been trapped under a pedal before now too), loads of feel. Not bad out of the car. £40 in a sale so hopefully would last twice as long as the Lonsdales 🤣 unlikely. Think they’re about £60 normally which I wouldn’t pay. Yup, MX5 NC driver here so no jokes about my ballet shoes, OK? When I first got the car 3yrs ago I had to buy the slim/thin soled Longsdale and corresponding Decathlon football trainers to give me some room and feel to the pedal box area. Big thick soled jogging trainers were too clumsy and numb...as for my work boots!!

I'm really into my trainers but for driving its really hard for me to find a pair of shoes i like the look of and give me great feel on the pedals. I own a 74' targa and i've found that an adidas shoe has given me the best feel so far. They're called the yeezy calabasas. These aren't the cheapest shoes but the leather quality is amazing and the feel on the pedals is the best i've found. Adidas actually make a shoe called the continental 80 which are very similar in style to the yeezy's but aren't as good looking, in my opinion. I was planning on picking up a pair of pilotis this year but based on your recommendation, i may not now. It would be good to see an update video after a couple months of using them? Maybe something you could film in the next month or two? Love the vids, keep up the great content mate.

I keep looking at driving shoes, and keep getting stuck looking at the Puma speedcats but I can't justify the £80-£100. Looking at my Converse they feel like fairly narrow and thin soled shoe, especially with the lacing all the way up the high top ones they really feel snug done up properly. Thanks for the video, really informative from someone who properly needs them 😁👍🏼

Can I suggest you give deck shoes a go? In the winter you could slip them on/off as required and in the summer, worn properly without socks, they give excellent grip and feel and look good with shorts. The most durable ones I've had were M&S and half the price of those Pilotis. Also, Hawes and Curtis for more crazy shirts.

Driving Shoes: Puma Speed Cat (I am through 4 pairs, and use 2 pairs atm): They are narrow, thin, fit like a glove, wraparound heel sole, completely free move around the ankles). Besides from driving the most comfy shoes I ever had. Downsides? Maybe durability (the flip side of being comfy and thin), draw dirt because of suede and they are rubbish in dirt and wet.

Merrell MQM Flex. These are the ones I currently wear when driving my MG TF. They have a thin toe area that gives good feel on the peddles, and yet a thick, bouncy, heel that makes walking in them very pleasant. I started thinking about shoes for driving when I switched from a Rover 100 to a Rover 25. Because of the very light throttle on this, on motorway journeys, my foot would go to sleep. Googling ideas for driving shoes, the general suggestion of thin soled moccasin types came up. Looked at Merrell and picked their barefoot style running shoes. Problem; no heel. So I had to carry walking shoes to change into. Eventually they wore down, lacing loops fail, and now they are my gardening shoe. The MG TF has a firmer throttle so the MQMs are a best balance for drive/walking, and their Chameleon 7 I use for heavier walking.

For the price the finish isn’t that cracking around the white circle in my opinion for a premium shoe I’d expect the stitching even if done by hand to at least have the edges tidied up not frayed. However I’m a ocd detail freak so take what I say with a pinch of salt 🤣🤣🤣

The ones you bought are a newer style for Piloti and I think intended to be somewhat of fashion shoe. As you point out, they sell other styles that are more traditional driving shoes. I have some older ones myself, and they are nice and narrow - my only issue is they are so tight my feet actually sweat a lot in them!

Hi Jay, you might like xero shoes, after wearing birkenstocks my feet are quite wide with gappy toes. But these are designed to fit a natural foot shape with a thin sole. I thought this might help you not have to buy that extra half size and give you more feel. Unfortunately they’re not that cheap and look like a climbing shoe but you can’t have everything.

My favorite driving shoes are my Pirelli P Zero shoes, which have souls similar to their tires. They made wonderful driving shoes, but I think they stopped making them. I've always used skate style shoes, when learning to heel and toe in my previous shoes (also cheap Lonsdale) I found my foot slipping off the throttle because I wasn't getting over far enough and a flexible sole wasn't giving me the support right on the outer edge of my foot (perhaps I have thin feet, can't see I've checked!). I've never really felt like I can't feel through the pedal because the soles are strudy so it's not being 'lost' in flex. That said I've also spent most of my time in hot hatches and specifically my EK Civic so small pedal boxes isn't an issue I've had to deal with.

I’ve had some shoes that I thought were good for driving but best ones I found yet are plain simple canvas Lonsdales from sports direct. You can typically buy them for 2 pairs for £12 or something like that. Flat, narrow, thin sole, super flexible. Like you said, like wearing a sock. Plus very breathable for long drives in the summer. Terrible for walking though, no cushion or raised heel. I used to keep a pair in the boot. Pilots look ok but I would rather looks at something like Sparco first, they are a proper motorsport brand, also I used to have Sparco Karting shoes. Piloti seem more like a fashion brand.

I always drive best in my Vibram FiveFingers, the toe shoes you've probably got a weird friend who swears by. I have big feet (47 EU / 12 UK / 13 US), and my vibrams are the only shoes that give me actual control, I can feel how much of the pedal is under the foot and where, so on a heel toe (or a toe toe when you have wide feet) I can really know if the foot has a good placement. Even if you're not willing to realise your feet do indeed have articulated toes, a pair of normal minimalist footwear with a thin sole will allow much better control than any thick boi soled shoe

You didn’t cover the rear part of the tread that for driving shoes must come up the back to provide grip but also trainers become worn in that area when driving. Puma Speedcats have been around for ages, although became Sparco branded at one point and now Puma Sparco branded, but still probably one of the best driving shoes, although a bit narrow for some people. Hunziker do some well designed driving trainers in a multitude of racing theme colours, so not everyone’s taste!

I have bona fide racing boots (for on track racing) and a pair of Piloti racing shoes and they are excellent and don't look anything like any of the shoes you showed today

They have some racing shoes marketed under their Stand21 brand but they aren't the sort of thing you'd wear for a casual drive

I'm surprised no one mentioned it yet: if you have one side of the shoe that regularly have more wear that the other you should buy shoes with proper supination support (pronation support is when inner side has more wear). What are you doing now it's not only damaging shoes, but also is pretty unhealthy for you in general. Ask at any Nike or runners store (they are nuts about it). They are the same price as normal shoes. Because it's on the outer side please google "supination support shoes" - you will see the difference.
