@@RothBeyondTheGrave for surely, and it makes young drivers overconfident and dangerous because they have absolutely no clue where the limit is. on the other hand my first trackday experience was in an AWD automatic car and it was insane fun, the car didn't just make it very easy to attack corners but the way some of these more sporty or agile ~2 ton modern cars catapult out of a corner is lovely, if I was born 20 years earlier there would have barely been a few cars able to deliver that experience. Just so you understand, this is coming from someone who thinks the best way around a corner is sideways. I don't think I'll ever change my opinion on that, but the fact that you can fly around the track with very little effort now and the fact that speed has become very accessible can be admired. Let's face it the only reason you guys are salty at all is because drivers cars are becoming less accessible. If there were no rich guys buying up every single car that offers a great chassis for rallying then we wouldn't have this conversation, we'd all have an E30 in the garage and there'd be no frustration.

wow, this takes me back to my high school days when i used to take my dad's 84 533i out for joy rides at night. There was something magical about the 80s bmw experience -- from the sounds of the door closing, the deepness of the black paint, to the starting rumble of the engine, to the the heaviness but extremely well synchronized and fluid movement of the clutch -- to the heft of the steering wheel, and so on and so on. felt like i was gliding at times. thanks for sharing this particular vid.

As a music nerd, this is like listening to a 1st vinyl pressing of a classic jazz album like "Kind of Blue.." I can hear an MP3 of "Kind of Blue," but the old vinyl seems warmer and inviting with its imperfections. But "Kind of Blue" is the height of talent and sophistication. Compared to a current car, this M6 is analog and you are experiencing it as intended. It is still a highpoint of engineering. A template that other cars strive to match. That is glorious.

Such a great era for German cars. They have soul, they have a ton of torque from down low, and great driver/car connection. Is anything better than an inline 6 cylinder with a manual transmission? Love it. As always, your comments about the feel and look of modern cars is on target. I have felt the same for a long time. I watched a preview of a new model, yesterday, and the main points of a very long video, were "moods" you could create in the dash lighting, and how the LED lighting on the exterior looked, and the massive (cheap looking) plastic grills at the nose and tail. 5 minutes into the video, I was done hearing about what entertains the brain of a 5yr old. But this is what people are now looking for.

Great review. BMWs in the 80s were just superb, with great styling and were truly drivers cars. I had several E30 325i models and just loved them. Another big plus in those days was the fantastic visibility due to the much greater glass area. The only downside was keeping those BBS wheels clean!

That's a freaking gem of a car. Classic BMW with that straight 6. And I bet they'd love to create something similar with a modern flavor, people at BMW probably know what it used to be about, yet they constantly get restricted with safety and emissions regulations and whatnot. Moreover, most of us broke car enthusiats can't really afford new BMWs and manufacturers usually go with stuff that will actually sell at dealerships, so they would rather listen to what people's wallets tell them, which is totally understandable. We don't really have any say here, cause we're just fans and most likely not their target customer base. We can bitch all we want but it's the money that talks. And afaik, new M3s/M4s sell very well.
