This week I show just what it is like to drive the cheapest Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe in the USA with under 100K miles and a clean title. I talk about how the Porsche 996 compares to my 986 Boxster that I had owned for over six years before the 911. There is also a discussion about the manual transmission versus the Tiptronic S as well as talking about the PDK.

Nice and informative video of the 996 - I also have a 99' 996 C2 tip that I have enjoyed as the second owner for 10 years now, and I am tired of hearing from others online and at car shows all about the IMS bearing as it affected less than 5% of 1st gen 996's due to them having the "dual row" bearing which was changed to a "single row" bearing after the 2000 or 2001 model years - I haven't had any problem with it and according to my service manager at the Porsche "stealership", if you change your oil and fliter once a year then your unlikely to have a problem with the bearing and I now have 100k on mine and he said most likely if the bearing was going to fail then it would have happened already, so I don't worry about it much. Also I use a magnetic drain plug just in case, as cheap insurance, and as an early warning indicator - Just drive it like you stole it ! and enjoy : )

Very good points about the IMS Bearing and sounds like you enjoy your car like it should be enjoyed. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

I’ll make sure to do another one in the near future. Perhaps drive a different direction so that you can see it in the corners. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.

Great video but it’s shame you couldn’t find some nice twisty corners to throw it around to show the performance. I’ve a 996.2 Tip and it really flies gear shifts are fine I just wish it had paddles rather than the poorly designed switches.

Agreed with the with the paddle shifters being better. I’m thinking of doing that upgrade at some point and will share a video if I do. As for the twisty roads, unfortunately the basketball courts were the other direction. I’ll have to do a video driving the opposite direction towards Yosemite and drive in some nice corners. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.

Great video. Thanks for taking the time to make it. I am curious about the front seat room in a 996. I am 6''4" and owned a 1983 911SC Targa, where there was plenty of legroom and headroom. I can't even fit into a Boxter, much too cramped and frankly it was so tight that I couldn't drive it. How would you describe the space in the 996. I really enjoy your video style, very down to earth and helpful. George in FL

Glad you enjoyed the video. I would say that the 996 feels like a good amount more space than the 986 as position for the seat sliding. Since there are back seats and not an engine behind you a taller person has more seat position options. The one thing that I have seen a few people do that are taller for more leg room is the GT3 center console delete. This removes the console under the dash and allows for more leg room to the right side. You also might look more at the 996.2 versus 996.1 as the early cars didn’t have a tilt steering wheel (only telescoping) so there wouldn’t be as much leg room under there. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

Im jealous at your basketball rims..

It is a nice court. The rims don’t always give you a shooter’s touch, but overall they are great. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

Hopefully it provides some helpful inform. Between a 986 S and 996 would be a tough choice. Partly depends on the type of driving experience you want. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

I wonder what the driving differences are driving a normal 996 911 and a 4S 996. Ive heard the suspension is stiffer but i wonder how much. I wonder if the steering ratio or gear ratios are different.

Very good questions. Fortunately my next video is supposed to be on the pros and cons of buying a 996 C4S. I’ve got most of the information researched already, but will make sure to include this information in it. Perhaps a future video driving the two back to back would be helpful as well. Just need to get the C4S to compare it to :) Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
