Driving through Eisenhower Tunnel - the highest vehicle tunnels in the U.S.

Күн бұрынThe Eisenhower and Johnson Tunnels provide passage on Interstate 70 across the Continental Divide in the Front Range of Colorado's Rocky Mountains. At over 11,100 feet in elevation, they are the highest vehicle tunnels in the U.S. They were the world's highest for 40 years. Here, I show footage of a westward drive through the Eisenhower Tunnel on July 12 of 2020, and provide some bits of history, stats and specs on the tunnels and their construction. This past July I was on I-70 on my way to Aspen & Snowmass, and I figured I'd get some footage of this iconic tunnel I've gone through many times before. The pace didn't actually change, I increased the video speed 🤣......No just playing - yeah, true - my next video will be another mtn. climb probably. And it looks like I am going to try again to make it out there to CA. this upcoming summer to try & climb Mt. Whitney.

Probably a day hike like I usually do, but it is quite a long distance of over 20 miles round trip, so it might be worth considering to make an overnight venture of it. Have you ever hiked this mtn.?

@@CentennialTreks I did Whitney over 3 days with 2 nights at trail camp pond. It was epic and memorable. Saw a lot of day hikers dealing with altitude sickness though. But you are used to 14ers!

Awesome, O.E. - Really the altitude doesn't concern me so much as the distance. That many miles are tough on the joints is really the thing. And hey, if you ever decide to venture here to CO., let me know I'd certainly accompany you on a high mtn. climb - we could do a joint video on it!

I lived in Summit County for four years. Driven through a zillion times...potentially really treacherous at times with icy steep scary roads on the western side. Get caught entering tunnel when there's an accident and you could be stuck hours waiting for it to open again. Then, if you're lucky going westbound there's a exit about a mile from the tunnel that will take you over loveland pass . Another hair raising road that has limited guard rails and deadly drop offs. A lot of people have lost their lives on this stretch of I -70.

I have been through it a fair # of times over the last several decades....that area has proven deadly. Mtn. driving can often be intimidating even for the initiated. It's actually pretty amazing the tunnels themselves haven't seen more adverse events than they have.

Actually, when new, the Eisenhower Tunnels _were_ the highest vehicle tunnels in the world. The new record holder since 2013 is the 0.86 mile-long two-lane en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunnel_Punta_Olimpica in Peru which is at an astonishing 15,535 feet in elevation.

I see. As I was looking up this video's info. I actually didn't know the Eisenhower tunnels were ever the highest in the world, a fact that wouldn't have occurred to me given all the other even higher places in the world. South America and the Asian ranges came to mind. Anyway, CO. Dept. of Transportation might now be getting a friendly message from me to update their info.!

I am beginning to think that the Upstate Tunnel in Grand Theft Auto 3 was heavily based on this tunnel even though it is blocked off which makes it even more sad. Damn you, Rockstar 😂
