Driving to Nordkapp on the northernmost road in mainland Europe

The road trip hit its high point: I drove up to Nordkapp along the E69 highway. Nordkapp ("North Cape") is called the highest point in mainland Europe. It isn't, quite, but it's certainly the historical and traditional such spot. The drive there is gorgeous, hugging the side of a sunny fjord before passing through some wild, untamed hills, as the land peters out and ends at a small triangular point.
This video is about my drive up to Nordkapp, and may experience at the tip itself. I saw all I could in the tourist center, went out to the famous globe monument, and learned about the history of Nordkapp, how it was discovered and how it became a tourist mecca, and why it is known as the northern tip of Europe.
Back down, to my rented house in the town of Olderfjord, I stopped at a couple of villages I'd skipped in the morning. They were absolutely gorgeous, and after seeing some more reindeer grazing beside the road, I thought all this a perfect end to the day.
But it wasn't the end. After dinner, I got a notification on my phone from the Aurora app that conditions might be right to go outside and watch for the Northern Lights. So I did. And wow, Norway didn't disappoint.
This may be the most perfect possible day of driving in Norway.

I’m speechless. Yes! I say hell yes! Lexus needs to sponsor you two to see all the most beautiful places on earth of your choosing. I want to see that. What you showed us today was, yes, “Magnificent!”. Who would even think it possible to get to the “edge” of the earth like that. Thank you Masayo! Thank you Jeremy! Thank you Norway! Magnificent desolation!

Oh yes, in most of these places there are a bunch of trails. This was a car trip, not much hiking unfortunately, but it would be a great place to go for some hiking. Ideal, even

This was magnificent, M and J. I've watched it twice so far. You have introduced me to the beauty of austerity. Why are there no trees up there? You had the whole world beneath you.

Thanks again! The weather and soil are just too cold (on average) and lacking in nutrients in the tundra to support big plant life. It makes the shrubs and lichens and things that are there that much more impressive. "Beauty of austerity" - good description!

Nordkapp is definitely an experience! Especially if being lucky and having midnight sun up there on the plateau. Went up there on vacation by car and caravan in 1992, 1993 and 1998, midnight sun 5 nights out of 6 :) I haven’t taken the tunnel over to the island because back in those days the tunnel wasn’t completed yet so there was a ferry. I was about to turn 7, 8 and 13 when I went up there. The scenery up there is rather spectacular and the Nordkapp center is a must visit because they really do have some nice exhibits about the location and good spots for midnight sun watching etc. seeing the movie is great too Now if being up there an evening in July, then there be CROWDS! Haha

@@T1DWanderer My mum and grandmother went up there on an excursion when they cruised with Hurtigruten from Bergen to Kirkenes, the excursion was in daytime a day in August and seeing pictures from that day is so different from the evenings I’ve spent up there in July haha Can’t remember now if my parents joined that excursion when they cruised with Hurtigruten the year after though, seeing they’ve been up there so many times by car. My mum and grandmother went on the excursion because my grandmother hadn’t been up there before

hi. like your shows on Norway, cute little commentaries along the way. I'm a solo traveler - I'd be saying a lot of the same. I was wondering if you could let me know how you got to the very tip area of Norway, and how you got your rental car. I have my norse lonely planet, could use that, but I was wondering about your experience. I've been there before, just Oslo, but I'm like you - go on off to the far reaches just to see what's there, and to say I've been there. thanks.

Good way to travel. I found the car (in Narvik, if you saw that video) on the Hertz website, and reserved it that way. And just followed the map of the roads up to Nordkapp. Those roads up there are very reliable and there aren't too many, so you don't really get (too) lost

You should read the book "cape cold to cape hot" about the first car at North Cape in 1955 by Richard Pape and his tour to Cape Town in Africa. A very hazardous journey. That car is now, on Norwegian plates, in the British Motor Museum.
