I've did that. From Bristol, UK to Budapest, Hungary. (1950km) I even boarded the Dover - Calais ferry without a clutch. The car was a 1990 Citroen BX 1.9D. The gearbox has survived,and after fixing the clutch it it was good to. Did 30 km in a city with a 1992 Ford Escort, and on that the gearbox has failed 6 months after.

The gears change pretty sweetly if you get the revs right. I drove a while like his in my MKII Escort after the cable had snapped. Took me a minute or 2 to work out how to move off without a clutch, but I realised if I put it into 2nd gear with the engine off and then started the car with it in gear I could get the car moving that way.

aah Thank you for the explaination of the synchromesh ! I have always wondered of this, as my car, 3th and 1th gear synchromesh are very worn, and do not work, as I always get grinding into 3th gear unless I go 35Kmph exactly, so I cannot change down so easy, and 1th gear I cannot get into gear when I am stopped unless release handbrake and shake the car to roll a little !

Very informative, I knew pretty well how everything works but the visualization kinda reinforced everything I knew. I have had to drive a car without a clutch once before because the clutch cable snapped and it was pretty easy because I only needed to stop 3 times, had a lot of luck with green lights and pretty quiet streets too

Ohhh any mechanic who has to drive a car around to the lift with no clutch-master/slave will tell you it's doable! And that you disabled the clutch safety switch with a paper-clip. :D ps- the language sounds too cool, I wish I knew it (tried to learn in HS, classes only offered were French and Spanish)....but this channel really helps with some terms! As a 13-year Master auto mechanic I would kill to just be your assistant!

I had this once. My clutch main cylinder leaked the fluid out and I had just enough clutch release to get going. I quickly realized while shifting that there was a leak and it would only get worse for every time I used the clutch. So I drove home from work using the clutch only one time. I'm lucky I didn't have to stop although on my 20 km route there are only four spots where I might need to stop. It is funny how the rev matching came natural by just the feel of the gear stick. You can easily feel when it wants to shift.

My great grandfather had an old 1940's pickup he used on the farm. He taught me how to repair and drive that thing, a three in the tree manual shifter. Back then, there were no synchro-mesh gears and you needed to know the RPM's top shift at (refered to as "crash boxes'" here in the states). I made that poor old thing whine like a banshee when he first had me drive it. Synchro-mesh gears are a wonderful thing....

i practice this a few times before and it went well :) a few jears later i bought a car where the clutch was broken. the car was cheap so i bought it and drove it home whit no clutch, the previous owner was suprised that i drove the car and did not thow it :) repaired the clutch and i had a nice cheap car as my new daily driver :)

Try driving and maximum speed using just the starter motor! (I did this to drive a blown Vauxhall Corsa B, took the spark plugs out and managed to get 3rd gear! Could maybe add some extra power to the starter motor?...)

I thought I’d never need this, it was entertaining when I first saw it, but just a couple hours ago my clutch stopped working entirely and I suspect a slave cyl or leaking line nearby. Thankfully the trick with using the starter allowed me to get it home, good thing I was pretty good at rev matching already or it would’ve been a pretty loud and crunchy journey lol

Leuke filmpje! Ooit stond ik midden in Amsterdam voor een stoplicht toen mijn koppelingskabel het begaf. Ben toen op dezelfde manier naar huis gereden. Helaas hebben de meeste moderne auto's een sensor op de koppeling, waardoor je alleen kan starten als de koppeling ingetrapt is en lukt het truukje niet meer. Vroeger was niet alles beter, maar veel techniek wel een stuk eenvoudiger, ook wat reparatie betreft.

I think for one emergency it's ok,but not forever.Clutch changing it's cheaper than a gearbox. But good experiment. In morocco my land it's usually to use this methode,people has not a lot of money to do everytime something in car garage.

Had to do this often with a car that had a habit of breaking clutch cables after a very short time due to poor internal lubrication when the cable was made, solution, soak cable in a light oil for 24 hrs before installing. Having spent many years driving vehicles with 'crash' boxes this is no problem with a syncro. box for myself.

In de meeste race-auto's heb je een sequentiële versnellingsbak (net zoals een motorfiets) en die gebruikt de koppeling helemaal niet tijdens het schakelen, alleen tijdens het wegrijden. Zonder te koppelen opschakelen is eigenlijk erg makkelijk, je kan hem altijd in zijn vrij zetten, en als je de pook tegen de versnelling aan houdt maar niet doorduwt, dan valt ie vanzelf in de versnelling als je het juiste toerental draait (je zet dan een beetje druk op de synchromesh). Met terugschakelen is het wat lastiger, maar dan werkt het ook als je over het synchroon toerental heen gas geeft en hem dan terug laat zakken.

I may once need this, and it will come handy. :) Although I wonder; how would the car handle if the tyres were filled to the brim with common, tap water? ((a silent recommendation for a useless experiment itself, as there are videos with tyres with water in them))

Leuke video, dit vond ik prachtig vroeger met me oude alfa. leuk is wel om nu eens te zien wat die onderdelen zijn in de bak, ik wist allen maar dat dit kon op het juiste toerental. Zou je misschien eens een video kunnen doen over het ouderwestse dubbel koppelelen want hier snap ik geen moer van.

I have had two cluches break down on me, living in a city i soon got a hold on how to drive and shift without clutch. The most important is to learn how to match the engines rpm before putting next gear in. Turn off car before stopping at red light and then get in first gear and turn key when green light comes on.
