But a Tesla Model 3 is around the same price, quicker, cheaper to run (like £1000 a year cheaper) and has better tech! Plus you pay less road Tax and BIK tax if that is applicable. So you must love BMW? Next car when u sell this one?

I've had mine nearly 4 months now, being an urban commuter it's on electric most of the time. My best pure electric range was 34 miles, worst (in very heavy traffic and winter weather) was 18, and on petrol only I got 42 mpg. Overall average is 121 mpg. I went for the Sport instead of the M-Sport and saved a big chunk of my money because I get the same gadgets and drivetrain without paying extra for the bodykit and hard suspension. And it's list price is under £40k so I don't get hammered on extra road tax. PS Melbourne red is lovely.

Anyoldion does it self charge when driving? Many thanks
@TheophilusPWildbeest
@TheophilusPWildbeest 4 жыл бұрын
@@Hazzer20 yes, there is a graphic display which shows how energy is moving between petrol engine, electric motor, battery, and wheels that shows what is happening in real time. But in petrol and htbrid modes most of the energy goes to the wheels rather than the battery, so go on a long run and you will end up with some charge rather than a full one.
@mraeece
@mraeece 4 жыл бұрын
Anyoldion forgive me if I sound stupid but if the hybrid battery is depleted. Is the cars max power capped at the engine power I.e 180ish bhp or is the full engine + electric motor together at all times ?
@TheophilusPWildbeest
@TheophilusPWildbeest 4 жыл бұрын
@@mraeece Good question, and I think the answer is that the battery is never fully depleted, so you almost always have the full 290 available to you, but in practice you never use 290 for more than a few seconds, and when your foot is off the gas then the battery is being topped up, ready for the next time you call out for 290. But yes, if the battery is properly flat then you only have 180 bhp. Likewise if you've got no petrol then you've only got 110 bhp from the electric motor.
@TheophilusPWildbeest
@TheophilusPWildbeest 4 жыл бұрын
@@nowiplay2 no, you could leave it in hybrid mode permanently and it would run fine, I think some lazy people do that, but that's not using it the right way. You might as well get a toyota self-charging car which does the same thing, but your mpg will be way less than if you plug it in each night, think about 45 mpg vs my 118 mpg. You need to drive as much on electric as possible, so you need a big charge and a big battery, and a petrol engine can't deliver that at the same time as driving the car, it only gives a trickle, so the overnight charge gives the car a massive head start each morning, and the car will do your first 20-30 miles on electric before switching to hybrid. Hope this helps.
@TheophilusPWildbeest

Do you know where to find the key for the locking wheel nuts? I do because I had a puncture and had to try to find it, nothing was said in the handbook, the lady at BMW assistance said "have to tried the glovebox" (yes I had), I looked inside the tyre inflation kit and found a polystyrene block with a cutout shape of the key, but no key in it. Then my wife remembered the salesman had to show us when we got the car a year ago. In the boot there is a black plastic box at the side which contains the first aid kit and tyre inflation kit, remove them, look into the box carefully and you will see it has a false floor, find where it clicks into place and remove it, and there is your key for unlocking the wheelnuts, inside the secret compartment. What a great place to hide stuff, just what I needed when I had a puncture. I later found it in the handbook under O for "On-board toolkit"

@@markgaudie80 only if that PHEV was owned for that reason. The UK government are introducing tax breaks for company car drivers to encourage them into EV which in turn should increase the supply in the used market. At the moment the cost of used EV which meet the needs of a family are few and far between. Leaf is maybe the best option. The Zoe battery rental seems prohibitive against the value of buying used.

Can someone tell me does the electric motor assist the petrol engine to gain higher mpg on the motorway or is it the case once you increase over a certain speed the car is powered only by the petrol engine ! I'm anxious to know what mpg it can achieve on the motorway at 70mph !!!
@m.r.a.c.m
@m.r.a.c.m 4 жыл бұрын
I have a Golf GTE and if your on the motorway and in hybrid mode it does do some assistance - for example when braking or slowing down, it cuts the engine and puts charge in the battery. As you start to accelerate back to up speed it uses a bit of the battery to assist before firing up the engine again, all very seamlessly. As for MPG, I can't speak for the BMW, but in my car o the motorway it close to 60mpg. It doesn't sound huge, but add that to round town and short drives I get around 200mpg, it works out to be a very economical car.

I've had my 330e for a couple of weeks now. It will accelerate up to 68 MPH on electric only, provided you haven't put your foot to the floor in which case the ICE will kick in. Once over 68 in Standard Hybrid mode, its ICE only although as the other reply surmises, off-throttle it will go into charge mode (severity of which can be managed by manipulation of the throttle, or if you put it in Eco Hybrid it will glide by default rather than charge)). An average day for me, the first 4 miles or so are urban (electric only) then its 30 -40 miles or so motorway / dual carriageway, some of which is quite congested to closer I get to the city, followed by town or city driving until its time to go home (I work in sales, visiting clients). Depending on where I am going, and how long I am parked, I can sometime get the battery charged up at my destination, but more often or not I cant so its the initial overnight charge, and then only what the regenerative breaking can scavenge throughout the day. Fully charged range is currently about 27 miles BUT it has been really cold here (Central Scotland) since I got it so I'm expecting better in warmer weather. I'd say an average day is 100 miles travelled, the car tells me I'm doing about 30-35 miles of those as electric and since I got the car its average MPG is 56. On days when I can get it charged at both end, that come up closer to 80mpg. For comparison, my Merc 220d was getting 53MPG on the same route.

Depends on what you're doing, crawling through traffic jams in winter with lights and heater on I only get 18 miles from the battery but on a steady run through the countryside in September I got 34. The computer display is based on your recent driving. Overall I'm doing 75% of my driving on electric and my combined average mpg is 118, which the same as saying 25% of miles on petrol at 30 mpg and 75% on electric at zero mpg. I'm happy with that, and it goes like stink and looks good.

disagree. With hybrid I can commute as EV and be able to have a single vehicle that covers my needs. No EV on sale today does that (outside of Tesla Model S or X which are outside my price range).

@@matthewrichardson666 have you considered the base model tesla model 3? its $67k aud where i am, not sure where you reside, but i'll drum up some figures for usa and uk. 38k gbp, 35k usd. when you consider its the same price as a toyota avalon in the usa, and a vw arteon in the uk, and both are not exactly luxury cars, i would consider them middle of the road, ev's are certainly within reach of most folks. 220 miles / 354km range, 0 - 60 mph (100 kph) in 5 secs.

I think these late comers of these environmentally vehicle manufacturers are trying to over engineering their vehicles now in trying to make up for the lost time. Just do it like the Lexus, why would you want to plug it in to charge 30 miles or so. Either just get a full electric or a pure hybrid. That's my two cents worth😂
@reubenmitchell5269
@reubenmitchell5269 4 жыл бұрын
so why would you buy one of these when the Model 3 exists for the same price? Plug in hybrids are dead in the water, Media please stop promoting them. They only still exist because the manufacturers didn't get it together soon enough and work out a good battery supply. BMW should be castigated for still doing this, not praised.

@@fredfredburger5150 I am looking at the car objectively, and its probably a better car to drive, with nicer interior (the BMW) but if I was paying for it, I would not want to buy a new ICE car now. All I am trying to say is I am annoyed how sycophantic the media is to BMW, MB, VW, etc. They should be saying "this is a half arsed attempt and we know it - you need to do better"

@@reubenmitchell5269 You're not looking objectively. Tesla has some way to go both in terms of car build quality and production/infrastructure before they become a genuinely viable option. I would agree the trend is moving toward electric cars but we're not there yet.

@@fredfredburger5150 Agreed, and I am not necessarily advocating for people to buy a Tesla ( I cannot afford one myself) but any BEV. I'm trying to say, the media should not be praising the car manufacturers for making a lame attempt to reduce CO2 emissions and mostly only because they are forced to. Look at the waiting lists for the Hyundai and Kia BEVs in the UK, people want to buy them but Hyundai and Kia dont want to sell them, because they cant get the batteries.

Tesla is unique but the built quality. Falling apart at the showroom bits fiddly and I have seen these new on road and the headlamps are already mist/foggy inside. One had a line from the rear lights gone. BMW has good built quality I think of Tesla 3 were to match a BMW for quality the price would be insane.

@Lukas Sadly I've noticed the people on this topic don't appear to live in the real world, I easily drive 250 miles in a day and drive a BMW diesel, for me the hybrid option could be better but I will have to evaluate them. Electric simply isn't an option as I would need to buy a petrol generator and mount it in the boot to charge the battery to keep the range, hardly practical is it
