Lifeguards in action at Makena State Park Big Beach. How they deal with the dangers of an incoming swell and the dangerous shore break at "Break Neck Beach" which averages three serious neck compression injuries a month with or without lifeguards. "Come see us if you have any questions?" said the lifeguard. My question is why are you not walking the beach and talking to the people that have no clue to the shore break that exists at Makena? The whole point of lifeguards at Makena State Park was the preventative aspect. That was the legislative intent when the legislature passed bills in 2005 that ultimately lead to funding in 2007. Why are the lifeguards only on Big Beach since May 1, 2008? Why are there no lifeguards serving the adjacent Little Beach? One third of the visitors to Makena State Park visit Little Beach based on my study of park usage. I have witnessed four drownings on Little Beach in the last few years. Lifeguards at Makena State Park have become part of the problem rather than part of the solution to a very dangerous beach. BIg Beach at Makena the most dangerous guarded public beach in the world.
