Most of us have experienced heartburn at one time or another, but for millions of people it is a chronic and painful condition. As a result, acid-blocking medications are among the top-selling drugs in America today. However, taking an acid blocker does nothing to address whatever is causing the heartburn and these drugs can have all sorts of negative side effects. Additionally, while acid blocking drugs block acid that can cause symptoms of heartburn and reflux, your body actually needs stomach acid to stay healthy. So, the key isn’t taking the drug. It’s finding the cause. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating heartburn and reflux. Together they discuss how to find the real causes of reflux and heartburn, get rid of them, and use the right foods, nutrients, and lifestyle therapies to heal the problem.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.⁣⁣⁣

They already know. Doctors only want to treat your symptoms, not your underlying condition or disease. THIS is how they make money. What most ppl don’t know is that there are legal drug dealers who show up at doctors offices to sell them on new medications. They ask the doctor to prescribe their patients THEIR meds instead of a competitors drugs, and when they prescribe a certain amount, they give the doctors a car, or free all expense paid trips for whole family to Europe, or many other expensive “gifts”. and all the Dr has to do is push these certain pills on the patients. Instead of the doctor actually looking to se what is causing the problem, it’s just easier to give them a pill for this and a pill for that. My stepfather was on over a dozen prescription pills. He just died at 67 yrs old.

One things that I dont agree with is saying "once you know what to do its easy". Eating a restrictive diet is certainly not easy for everyone and can have other side effects that make you feel worse than just having reflux. I have tried all natural remedies for GERD and they generally always seem to make it worse. Giving up coffee and eating a low carb diet leads to a complete halt of all bowel motility for me and makes me feel lethargic and depressed. HCL and other things to increase stomach acid also seems to make my GERD and stomach pain worse (most any supplements do). Stress over restrictive dieting is actually also a huge trigger for my reflux as I feel tense and guilty that I cant control myself or do things right. These are just some thoughts on saying "treating this condition is easy". This can be a very emotional condition as food is not simply sustenance to all people but something to be shared and enjoyed-- not an easy thing to do when living with GERD and other digestive issues.

Iv asked my doctor to get it removed and he said its nothing to worry about . Iv told him about low acid affecting the LES function and he said its nonsense. Iv been to 7 doctors including specialists and they all perscribe ppi's . Im losing this battle . Im weak all the time . I get sick very often . Im sad that my kids always see me ill . I had reflux for years, and took all kinds of prescription and non-prescription meds to deal with it. A year ago I eliminated all sugars and grains and starchy vegetables from my diet, and the reflux stopped within days. Just stopped. My chronic post-nasal drip also stopped. I've had heartburn a couple of times since then, due in both cases to eating something that was a little too spicy for me.

My little great granddaughter was prematurely born and it is a miracle that she is alive. They have given her all kinds of medications and done all kinds of treatments for her to survive. She only weighed 1 lb14 oz. when she was born. She has really bad acid reflex and gas. They have her on all kinds of antacids. The doctor say that this is the only thing that will work. When they take her off of it, she cries with excruciating pain. She has a tube in her stomach so they can feed her. Is there anything natural that can be done for this sweet little baby?It breaks my heart to see her in such pain when she’s off of the medication.

I spoke to a Locum Dr (my own Dr had jumped ship as soon as Covid began!) and he advised me to take half the dose for 2 weeks, after that, apart from YT I was on my own. However, I think I’ve cracked it, unless I eat something my stomach doesn’t like, especially chocolate! The acid blockers do not work on me, and I have been asked to go on a low dose of antidepressants which I am not comfortable doing. I am still searching desperately for a solution 1 and a half year into this condition! Has anyone been asked to go on anti-depressant.

You need to know your triggers. Avoid sugar at all costs. It is the number 1 enemy. For a week, cook all your food in water only. In the morning get a bowl of oatmeal cooked in water. You can eat a banana as well with oatmeal. Do not drink and eat together. Keep 30 mins between eating and drinking. Yes, drink water only, no other drinks or beverages. Eat brown bread only. The food you can cook in water are carrots, beetroot, bottle gourd (if it's sour don't eat, should be sweet), pumpkin. The fruits you can have are bananas and papaya. I know it's looking tough to do but it will reduce all the inflammation caused by acid reflux within the body. Feel free to reply to my message.

@@Sofia-dl9vw It will take more than a week to start noticing some changes. Besides you can practice the Apana Vaayu Mudra. Search it on KZfaq. You may also consider boiling some cumin seeds and have the water in the morning on empty stomach. The pain that you get from acid reflux is mostly from the inflammation caused by the problem. To heal yourself, you need to get rid of the inflammation. What are your symptoms if you don't mind me asking?

@@abetterself4544 my symptoms are heartburn, nausea, vomiting sometimes, excessive phlegm coming up my throat, coughing, sour taste in mouth and lack of appetite. I have followed the diet you mentioned in your post and my symptoms have reduced. The biggest secret has actually been not eating 3 to 4 hours before bed. That has made a huge difference. But the psychological impact has been the worst. My quality of life has really gone down.

@@Sofia-dl9vw I know it's hard, but you need to focus on getting better. You should train your mind to think that you are just fine. And also while you cook, put some positive thoughts in the cooking process. Say that the food you are cooking is like medicine. It will cure you. While you eat, you should love what you are eating. The food will make you lose some weight. But on a positive note, your inflammation will reduce considerably. Once the inflammation goes, the pain will go as well. Have you been practicing the mudra I mentioned? Also, eat slowly. Do not drink 30 mins before and after meals.

My Kaiser nutritionist isn’t promoting ensure but she is telling me to eat intuitively after I told her I have severe issues with sugar. Like I used to hide sweets and gorge on a whole bag of dried mangoes. I said I just wouldn’t eat cake and I wouldn’t partake in mangoes because I can’t control myself. She told me that’s ‘dieting’ and that’s bad. I’m sure intuitive eating works for some people but not people who are coming from a place of addiction. I was disappointed that even after I expressed I didn’t like the idea she still pushed it. Guess Kaiser only has one solution for the majority.

I've had a lump in my throat feeling over a year. My family Doctor told me it was anxiety related. Had me see 2 therapists for over 6 months, then an acupuncture person and guess what, lump in the throat still there. This is after a epidural and a lower GI scope showed no issues. Then had me see a Doctor for allergy testing to find that I'm not really allergic to anything, especially foods. So, I started playing with the meds my family Doctor had me on. One of which is omeprazole 80 mg 'per day for over a year. I dropped to 40 mg, then a week later dropped to 20 mg, then 20 mg every other day and thats when the heartburn came back on with a vengeance. I've started apple cider vinegar 3-4 x's per day. The acid reflux become minor once or twice a day, but I can't seem to stop the persistent coughing. I get the coughs and it's embarrassing when I'm with clients. I've began chewing gum when the coughs starts and it helps. Will this be like this forever? I don't know. I'm not sure if I've damaged my upper sphincter muscle. Due to Covid I lost my business and had to go to medicaid insurance. I've restarted a new business! Can you organization help me??? Please tell me what I should do. Thank you
@omarct
@omarct 2 жыл бұрын
You have silent reflux. The acid is going into your throat and sinuses. The omeprazole lowers the acidity of it so you dont feel it burn as much but the acid is still there and is damaging your throat. Specially at night when you are sleeping, there are many steps you must take to stop it, and it will take weeks for it to get better. Its not just acid but also pepsin gas that goes up when your burp and whatnot. You need alkaline 8.8ph+ water to gargle and clear your throat and maybe swallow a little bit to clear your esophagus. You should raise the head of your bed so your chest is on an incline and sleep on your left side. You also shouldnt eat anything 3 hours before sleeping. Avoid drinking water with your food as it will lower the acidity and make it stay longer in your stomach. Remove certain foods from your diet, such as coffee, alcohol, tomato, chocolate, mint, fatty foods, cured foods such as hams. If you do this you should feel better after a few weeks.

Do a deep tissue massage into the ribs and under ribs on both sides. Make sure to pull downward and massage abdominal region. Do this every day, you will feel very sore, however it will get better. Alot of time it is a muscle adhesion and fascia tension that needs to be released. Also, start deep breathing to expand the diaphragm daily. You will heal.

Learnt last year my fundiplication has loosened , was done in 2009 , it was great , so now it’s the thick mucous again . So my oesophagus is damaged .. pre cancerous . So find this very interesting , however so much I can’t eat . Don’t eat junk , lots of veges I can’t have , however need red meat as I constantly anemic ... born with that too .. premature baby . 1 month . So am aware mucous excessive is inflammation . I feel sick can nstantly , food in my mouth , when I bend over , has for years . Having. Babies made it worse .. look at low fodmap , even foods on there can’t have . Focus on eating foods high in fiber, dont overeat and dont drink after a meal. Try drinking mineral water with magnesium about an hour after a meal. Salt your meat so you can drink. Fish for fiber wherever you can. Try to blend your veggies into a cream soup and just swallow it. you should do fine with zucchini, pumpkin and carrit soup, then slowly add broccoli. Use a little bit of tumeric and ginger in your soups and on red meat but make sure it is cooked with it. Majoran and cumin should also help. Dont eat or drink 2 hours before sleep. Make sure you dont consume a lots of protein at night. If you feel like you ate something that irritated you, take 3-4 almonds immediately. You should always soak them overnight and then dry them out. Eat foods high in fiber, chew your food thoroughly and as soon as you feel full, stop eating.

The food and acid are comming back because your stomach lining is irritated. Forget about the sphincter story. You need lots of fiber to flush it out down and that fiber should also be easily digestable so it doesnt sit for too long in your stomach.

Then I got diagnosed with bipolar disorder and started taking Seroquel, and then the avalanche of psychotropic drugs began. My GP prescribed rabeprazole, and when that stopped working, he started me on omeprazole. When I moved to a different province that was not covered by pharmacare, so then I started taking Zantac, but I had to keep increasing that too. Then Zantac got taken off the market and I started taking Nexium. Same deal. Now I take 3 Nexium capsules a day and that's not enough. Almost 3 years ago I fell at work and I broke my kneecap and shattered my tibial plateau. I'm pretty sure I have osteoporosis, but I also don't want to get esophageal cancer. according to them, tapper off slowly if you've been taking it a long time.

I'm disappointed to learn that you aren't accepting new clients at the moment! I had very strange and awful symptoms after my first endoscopy last week, and I'm 23. I couldn't breathe, my esophagus and chest hurt constantly, I struggled to drink water for days. Not to mention I have GERD, and I am on prescribed omeprazole. Tried to stop it and I had severe bile vomiting for days. I think I might have bacteria growth from my medication. Getting tested soon hopefully. This has been terrible

I would love to hear your thoughts on Barrett's Esophagus. I was diagnosed at age 35 and have been on Omeperazole ever since, and still struggle with reflux.

I have the same problem. They ignored Barrett’s esophagus completely. I gave them a thumbs down because They were too selective in their discussion and forgot about people like you and I. I prefer to keep my esophagus so I will take the PPI.

@@GarySmith-up1un You ever read about Dr. Gundry? I have suffered from heartburn, gut issues, etc to where my skin would get little bumps almost like goose bumps but red and itchy. He has talked about treating patients with Barrett's esophagus. I am still on my pathway, but I am off the PPIs. I have gotten so much better, but I still have bouts if I eat wrong. Good luck in your journey
