Last month my video with Dr. Antoniewicz started the discussion about the importance of diagnosing and treating insulin resistance, not only for weight management but for lifelong health and disease reduction. Today we are digging more into this really important and complex topic, and highlighting some more details about what IR is, why it’s important, how we diagnose it and how we can treat it with simple concepts surrounding Nutrition, Movement, Rest and Stress (emotional and physical) management. If you didn’t catch Part 1, you can find here!
If you struggle with your weight, sugar addiction or just feel stuck, as Dr. Leah says, "you are not a bad person trying to get good, you are a sick person trying to get well”. While up to 40% of American women suffer with IR (largely undiagnosed) only a small fraction are getting the help that they need. My hope is that the information you will hear today will inspire you on your wellness journey, and we are here to help you. The recipe for success in healing IR is clear, it works for our patients, and it can work for you too!

Thank you! I’m 57 post menopause and until recently I’ve never heard really anyone talk about some of these concepts, not altogether holistically anyway. I’ve started implementing more protein, less carbs, berberine, no sugar, no alcohol and strength training with heavy weights. I am definitely seeing results - never felt better and slowly stomach is getting smaller and flatter. Not overnight, but yes there is progress! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

As a previous personal trainer and nutrition coach, I agree with this. I will say I did have to address the over eating of fats to several of my clients. Some took “healthy fats” as eat as much as you want. I had one female client tell me she made a shake that consisted of 2 TBS Natural Peanut Butter, 1TBS Olive oil, 1/2 Avocado, protein powder, 1 banana, 1/2cup blueberries and skim milk. I had to state that getting 40+ grams of fat, along with 45+ grams of carbs and 30+ grams of protein in one setting is more than one’s body can assimilate and breakdown properly. Too much of any healthy thing can lead to fat gain.

I am possibly perimenopausal but not sure. I have all of a sudden in the past 6 months gained a lot of weight. Some I know why (I.e. poor food choices and lack of exercise) but some I’m like wow really. I am glad I have found your videos. I am going to try and do better with the sugar since that is my kryptonite bc I have GOT to get this weight down.

I know what you mean! Almost the moment I turned 46, I started packing pounds. I eat mostly clean and I exercise, but I started craving bad carbs suddenly. I have recently incorporated intermittent fasting again and mostly low carb, higher fat, protein and fiber. We'll see how it goes.

I love that you embrace fat!! It’s good for our body and our brains love it!
@fairywar
@fairywar 3 ай бұрын
The fact that the brain is mostly made of fat has nothing to do with its preferred fuel. Our brain actually loves carbs. In fact, small children fed lower carb diets (no radical low carb), develop smaller brains and have lower IQ. Humans did not evolve eating fats on the daily, except that coming of the hunted animals, which fats composition was totally different than what these women are recommending. They may not be overweight but they certainly do not look like the picture of health to me

Hi Dr. Hardwick, Your videos are so informative for those of us struggling. I have tried to use the Estrogen patch 0.05mg and it keeps giving me sharp pain around my lower pelvis. Can I just take oral progesterone 200mg without using the patch or what would you suggest? Ty! ❤

Well, Estrogen has a lot of benefits that are not provided by progesterone so you may want to ask your provider to try divigel or even a pellet

I've just subscribed to your Channel. Just love your videos. I've learned so much from you. Thank you for educating us. I am also on the pellets for Testosterone and Estradiol. As for the Progesterone I was prescribed 200mg Troches. Since they are dissolvable am I getting the full 200mg in my body??? Thank You and so appreciate your videos/knowledge. Especially love the video on what levels we should be getting. So helpful. My levels were too high at first but were adjusted.

Thank you for your comment. 200 mg of progesterone is just fine. However, my question is me why you aren't just taking a progesterone pill which you can get from any pharmacy and insurance covers it. It's the same stuff just cheaper. That's what I take and no reason to take a troche where the absorption is much less Reliable . You can get bio identical progesterone in 200 mg from any pharmacy with a prescription.

It takes at least 6 months to see changes with berberine. I agree I wouldn’t be worried about it long term as it’s a natural herb vs. synthetic alternatives and or insulin.

One issue with progesterone cream is that we don't know how much we are getting so we cannot say that it protects you against uterine cancer, which is a big benefit from oral progesterone also because it makes you sleepy. Generally, we want to take it at night but if it's working for you then go for it.

What is the goal insulin level? Also, does using olive oil to sautee make it unhealthy?
@drsusan
@drsusan 3 ай бұрын
Fasting insulin less than than 5 is excellent. Less than 10 is acceptable, but really the lower the better. Olive oil is very safe to cook with unless it's extremely high temperature. We wouldn't deep fry with it because it has a rather low smoke point anyway so generally olive oil isn't the one that we worry about becoming trans with cooking.

I don’t believe that just because your children are adults in college that there might not be an emergency and you don’t need your phone nearby. Just put it across the room away from the bed. As a mom an d daughter of elderly parents I would not even be able to sleep with my phone in another room or silenced. Just think how you would feel if your family member had an emergency at midnight while you were sleeping and you were unreachable and didn’t wake up till 8 o’clock, you would have missed that emergency by eight hours , not 20 minutes, and that could make a difference. It’s as if you dont understand the meaning of EMERGENCY. You acknowledge there are no studies proving benefits of certain supplements- then you go on to state they are not harmful. As there are no studies proving efficacy and safety, there are no studies proving there is no harm. For a doctor, you are sorely lacking in common sense.
