This never happens. People walk by and then....actually stop to listen. I was overwhelmed with emotion! I walked towards them to show that I saw them. We talked for five minutes afterwards. Now I can say that I'm finally fulfilled. 4/25/19

1) Street playing is not all fun and games and dancing kids. Doing this for 7 years. I regularly face not only verbal abuse, but physical assault as I work a few blocks from downtown eastside Vancouver. I'm surrounded by addicts, drunks, and people who should be in mental homes.
2) I'm a musician that writes his own music for 20 years. Check out my bandcamp page to see what I can really do with a guitar. 500 albums of original instrumentals.
3) I get asked this 100 times a day so here's the answer: I play on the street and not in a band because all the clubs closed years ago. I used to lead many bands from 2006 to 2018. That's all gone. It's also a lot more hassle, and less money, to run a band than play by myself.
4) I get asked this 100 times a day. "Why don't you try a better spot?" THIS is the best spot. How do I know? I've tried all of them. This spot is even better than Granville Island which is all tourists. Vancouver does not have many spots to play. Maybe 3 downtown. I have to go where traffic is heaviest or you make no money. Playing on beaches and parks or near homes, condos, apt buildings, is forbidden. This is the main transit hub of trains/seabus and also walkway for the convention centre as well as heavily touristed gastown.

Oh yeeeeeaaaaah. Felt my heartrate slow.....felt my inner chill rise. Started swaying a bit and feeling that deep smooth groove. I've noticed blues is audience participation. Everyone present rises and falls together. We all feel it because we've all had it. If only we let our selves go and allow the blues-smith to take us there together. We all sense and feel the emotion together.... and then he/she brings us back home safely when its time. Love how blues chords resolve. We anticipate the chord change, but we are still taken by the beauty and smooth swell like a lazy wave passing under a boat. Just so very well performed, very nice tempo. Not rushed. Juuuuust right....

Only just found you on tube. You are a master guitar player. Such talent. You know most people don't know good music if it hit them in the face. I'm 70 and between 1966 and the late 90's I've been to hundreds of shows in bars here in Montreal. The jazz festival of course also. Today because of my illness I rely on my music library and now you tube. I can't believe that you aren't playing in a band and showing people your mastery.

WOW! Okay...this one got my attention. Reminds me of the hours I used to spend at The Zoo Bar in Lincoln Nebraska when I was in school. This has taken the top spot in my shatnershairpiece music library including the stuff I bought from bandcamp. Long live the Blues!!!

Leave it to some "Southern Belles" to appreciate the blues...especially if one comes from the state of the late, great, Stevie Ray Vaughn.

One of your strongest pieces, Robin, and I don't say that lightly as you pretty much rock everything that you play. But your take on this one is so awesome: the tone, phrasing, feel. Somewhere, Mr. B.B. King has a huge smile on his face. Keep the tasty stuff coming!

Your playing is 'scary' good! I think people have the idea you're a covert well known professional with a famous group, can't remember your name and are too embarrassed to interact and ask you.

What phenomenal soul. Respect! Very nicely done. Proud to see such music being played in Vancouver (my old home town). I used to live on Barclay in the West End. Played a many clubs in downtown, Gastown, English Bay, etc. Nice that the tourists stopped to chat and thank you for your music. So sad to hear that Vancouver's music scene has crashed. It used to be vibrant in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

-Tourism 'Was' prolific into welcoming Canada. Tourists from the States were endlessly streaming north, to cross into an excitingly different country....spending $,$$$ freely to enjoy the ambience :) We personally [as well as countless associates} ended our tours north, as Canada became less accepting. Hostility emerged from the shadows ; Last time, crossing from Duluth Minn USA, into Thunder Bay. RV (Late Model Class A, with late model tow) was detained, thoroughly searched and items discarded as restricted. SWAT attired officers were sternly warning of All of the laws in Canada, threatening to 'Confiscate' the RV, imprison wife and I [retired], if Any firearm was discovered. Needless to say, that was the LAST time crossing the border into Socialism Canada. Ourselves, as well as our RV associates declared so.. Alas..., US, formerly Freedom loving, is rapidly following suit. Soon, all of USA will bustle about, Masked, staring at handhelds, distancing from others, as they ignore God Given, tediously practiced Talent ;)

Robin, some tasty licks ya' got there! Mind if I borrow some? I Started out playing cream, Clapton, Albert King and others. My band wasn't that into the Blues that much but we kept the Cream and Clapton stuff as it was still popular as well as some of the more bluesy Allman brothers stuff. We share the experience of playing packed clubs to appreciative audiences. Although I also had a day job and was a part time university student for awhile, playing multi day or even week long gigs was me revved up. We also played "Rock N Roll Hoochie Koo" My favorite tune in our rep. I was lucky enough to have seen Johnny Winter And when they played a concert at my university, as well Johnny performing a solo gig playing acoustic blues on a National steel guitar. He actually lived in my region and my bass players brother did some album covers for him. We were invited to one of his birthday parties. but we had a gig and couldn't go. We were told that Rick Derrenger and Johnny played for quite a while entertaining his guests. He occasionally came into town to visit some of the bigger local clubs - never bumped into him myself but a work mate of mine did so on occasion. A great treat was seeing Muddy Waters on his blues tour in the seventies. Winter was part of the tour along with several of the white blues players who were popular at the time. Muddy Waters was electrifying, and put on a performance I'll never forget! There was a local blues man, Ernie Williams who I saw on the few occasions when he was playing in town and I had the weekend off. It was always a treat. He was beloved by everyone who met him or went to his gigs. Ernie passed away on March 21, 2012 at the age of 87. Alas those days are long gone but certainly not forgotten, at least by you and I. -dave

Great stories, thanks for sharing. Great that you saw Winter and waters. I loved that hoochie coo song. I think I saw Winter late 80’s. Also saw John Lee Hooker around that time sat in a chair the entire gig.

Nice thoughts Dave ! Sad era's come and go, kinda like us , right. Never saw any of those greats but my first concert was a guy I had never heard of as I grew up on country music . I was 10 or 11 and on a trip to LA to visit relatives . My cousins had tickets to a concert and one of the guys was sick so I went with them. Saw a mind altering concert with Jimi Hendrix . I was blown away ! 8 )

Great blues. Interesting conversation. Vancouver is way too expensive for average people. That's just too bad. I remember seeing an advertisement at a Skytrain station for a drug house that was partly constructed from a mobile home and the price was close to $2 million CAD, and that was around seven years ago!
