CL Smooth speaks about the ongoing tension with Pete Rock, and how he felt that Pete Rock sough out financial opportunities and developed an attitude where he believed that he could go beyond what was created with Pete Rock & CL Smooth......CL Smooth mentions how talks of a reunion continuously gets stalled, how he is cheated like the fans, how he feels that the classics they made together will always be greater than the work Pete Rock did individually, how he feels short changed by Pete Rock and undervalued for the work they did together, how he feels that Pete Rock may want to wait until he hits rock bottom to "save" him, and "get him out of the homeless shelter at the kindness of your heart"..... CL Smooth has never been this open about his feelings towards the group and where they stand in 2018....it is a must hear for any fan of Mecca And The Soul Brother, The Main Ingredient, The All Souled Out EP and all the other B-sides and Soundtrack Cuts!!!

I see your point, but I'd rather nothing than something that isn't genuine. I was lucky enough to see a reunion gig they did. But when they were fininshed, they went their seperate ways off stage and Pete seemed kind of cold. Also, after CL rapping his heart out all night it was also sad to see the younger crowd go crazy for Pete's verse on Creator.

realdeal139 truth is, Pete doesn't care about his fans. Because if he did, he would of release that 3rd album with CL, instead of disappointing fans worldwide. Besides that, there's a lot of rare and unreleased tracks that Pete still hasn't put out yet, including remixes that were only heard on the radio back in the 90s / 2000s. Smh.

I really thought that they would have gotten it together after Guru passed, on some "nah, we can't go out like that." Hell, Guru and Preemo had a rocky relationship too but the love for the music kept them together, at least until Solar came in the picture but that's another story. Pete's place in Hip-Hop is set in stone at this point, nothing to prove to no one. If he really is the problem, he gotta give the people what they want, even if it's one final album on some closure shit. If Tip and Phife could patch things up and get back to work before Phife left here, Pete and CL can too...

I remember Pete was in The Source back in like '02 talking about a new album with CL. It's like a cycle. You'll hear about it, nothing'll happen, CL will be blacking out on Pete in some interview, a couple years go by, repeat. It's not like a Pete/CL album would singlehandedly save Hip-Hop but it would mean so much to the fans..

Pete was definitely at his best when he was with CL Smooth! I'm with CL on this! I truly believe Pete Rock is the catalyst on why there will probably never be another album! Great hip hop producer, definitely put a whole bunch of hip hop classics out there! But as a person his attitude sucks! Met him on one of his tours! Asked him to sign my Troy vinyl! Dude was like I'm not a machine, On the Pete and CL tour, dude didn't even come out to greet the fans. CL on the other hand was very down to earth, signed two of my records and always pleasant to fans! I've also noticed Pete on social media getting into arguments with people! Got into a gripe with Lupe Fiasco over the a Troy sample hip hop track that he agreed to let him do? I also remember him getting his lawyers to shut down a Pete Rock fan site and his beef with BBE records! Yeah definitely thinks hes the problem child in this!

C Knicks I can understand what you say about signing autographs when he's going about his everyday life. But to constantly have that kind of attitude towards fans who supported him from day one, who still pay to come to see him. Bearing in mind we're in the era of Trap and mumble rap saturating the airwaves. I think he should be a bit more gracious, thankful and receptive. Signing autographs may indeed be annoying but that's the life he chose when he decided to pursue a Hip hop career and unfortunately he will be judged on how he interacts with his fans as although I might still buy his records. I wouldn't pay to see him live again. At least not without CL!

garkah yup, that was me, I had the domain djpeterock, had it as a blog fan site, they contacted me cause I posted a story about the tribeccalled quest sample situation, he hit me direct thru twitter saying maybe something good will come out of it, spoke with one of his people direct on the phone about running his website, I was excited, then a week or 2 later I received an email from his legal team telling me not use the domain anymore, not to long after, peterock.com website is up and running. People preach about giving people opportunities then shit in your face. I believe everything CL is saying. Irony is his site isn't even being updated.

I like what CL says because what he is really explaining is how disorganized the entire business is all together due to egos. Pete Rock is my bro never met CL but I love both my bros reppin MT Vernon hoping that they realize that the world lives off their energy it's way bigger than the music, the money and the business. The interactions alone of how we deal with each other in general reflects on all us as a whole. If Biggie and PAC actually really understood how much influence they had on the world things may have turned out much differently. Peace to Mecca and the Soul brother. Hope you bris can but differences to the side in terms of probably saving a lot of fans lives. I'm God from the legendary Harlem Knights who turned down million dollar deals just to show the puppet master industry that their money is meaningless to us with in a system that has branded my bros and sis so bad until they have become blind to reality. Educate your fans CL like you always do and Pete Rock will follow along in suit like a true brother inspired by a true brother. Shiiii we can't have all positive with out negative. Friction is what keeps energy at its most powerful stage 24/7. Don't sweat it Almighty Kings Unite

C.L. is talented enough to stand alone and get down with other production - this we all know....man listen, call up Grap and fire up the SP and get busy again. But I know how it is though - when its your brother whom you've made historical Hip-Hop monoliths with, you tend to wish to stay with that principal fire and flame from which you were forged. I get it, but F that my brother, times change and nobody waits and anticipates for Tuesday record store releases anymore. It ain't 1992 anymore, you are only waiting on yourself - the Hip-Hop heads are here and are ready for your art.

So this interview is 3 years old however and this pains me cause Pete Rock is my favorite producer of all time but I'm seeing what Cl was saying in this interview as clear as day..from Pete getting fan pages taken down cause of the mention of cl,his spats with fans at shows(I know a few people that seen him in person and said he ain't cool),too him suing Nas and now blasting Canibus over two songs he clearly proudced and now denies producing..his spats with younger rappers on the gram n twitter..I been knew his relationship with cl wasn't good even when they squashed it to go on tour..there interviews always seemed akward..I love Pete's work there's no denying his greatness however he needs to calm that ego down he's starting to burn bridges even more cause he has that I'm "Pete Rock" and I'm the shit attitude and that's not good for business. That shit he pulled on Canibus disrespecting him after they did work was classless and unprofessional ..Canibus ain't perfect..but too publicly disrespect that man over business that should have been kept behind closed doors knowing it would hurt his reputation more is super wack and the Nas lawsuit out of nowhere makes him look like a bozo. It's been 28 years and u finally sue Nas over illmatic royalties??? This ain't the mountain Pete wants too die on,as for this interview Cl pretty exposed dude like it or not and it shows more n more by the day with dudes actions. People keep saying cl there's madd producer's out there ..but that's not the point it's the principal of the situation. That said I just hope Pete doesn't ruin himself letting that ego get the better of him.. that's a very dangerous game for the talented brothas like him.

@@SLPERIONTV I feel u,Cl alluded too Pete not being good with business in terms on being late too studio sessions etc in this interview..the fact Canibus manager put out receipts on dude showing pete trying to extort them on top of the Nas lawsuit..shit ain't a good look. Think about it if u got 30plus years in the game why are u airing out bad business on the gram? That's exactly what Cl was talking about..Pete showing signs of immaturity in situations he should have stayed quiet in not too mention we all know in case ur lawyers always tell u too shut up so u don't incriminate urself in which Pete did exactly that lol..like I said I could never dispute his talent as a producer..he's top 2 for me..but he going out exactly like Pippen did in sport's.. It's exactly what a culture vulture does in other words

It's strange Pete Rock didn't tell his side of the story. If he stays quiet, that means there's some truth to what C.L. is saying. Pete made be a dope producer, but personal wise may be something different. And last, Premo didn't get the chance to patch things up with Guru. Tomorrow is never promised.

LONS is definitely a heartbreaker! The fact that they all was upset when everyone liked Busta and ignore the rest of them. Busta was definitely unorthodox! His delivery was special, when he began doing other shit without the group that was when shit started to escalated. Being on features and different albums of others, nobody was looking for them. But when they decide to continue without Busta? Doors was not open for them for he was the hottest rapper with his own album in '96! LONS last album was in 93'! So think about that, and I believe at the time rumors said that Elektra was going through changes cleaning house. Not only LONS was effected but also Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Mecca and the Soul Brother and The Main Ingredient are very authentic hip hop albums? But it wasn't making any sales like LONS material.

@@415Dwilliams Organized Konfusion had two albums with Hollywood Records which was Disney's label! They wasn't selling alot of copies though they was making some amazing heat! Labels like that didn't know how promote hip hop back then! When they done their third album "The Equinox" on Priority Records? It's like the album was good, but once again didn't sell enough! I thought the album was good but some of the storytelling skits got confusing! But the album like I said was good

Excellent point. CL is an incredible lyricist and MC. He could get another producer or even a band and move forward. Let me say what I haven't seen in the comments: PETE ROCK HAS MOVED ON. He has put out 4 or 5 of his solo albums, make collabo albums with other mcs. Dude has put out about a dozen or more projects. CL needs to move on. That solo album he did was dope. Where's the follow up? Fans aren't really trippin for a reunion album like that. We have so much Pete Rock material. We need more CL material.

CL Smooth is one of the best, most complex, meaningful poets I've ever heard. I teach his shit in my university classes. Pete Rock may be a good DJ, but Hip Hop is about the WORDS man, the fucking words. I just searched the net for a concert and I could care less if Pete Rock is there or not. I just want to hear CL Smooth kick his shit. He could do it acapella for all I care. I'm sure there are top DJs eager to work with CL Smooth. Pete, what's your side of the story, cause the fans are waiting, man! For now, I'm pulling out my Mecca and the Soul Brother CD.
