Ever heard a word that seems to be missing a syllable? Why do entire syllables completely disappear from words? Let's practice 20 common words with dropped vowel sounds and deleted syllables.
As you'll discover, native English speakers sometimes delete reduced vowel sounds from words in order to say the words more efficiently. When we say these words every single day, we need to find faster ways to move through all those shapes and vowel sounds!
If you feel like you're mispronouncing words or they don't sound the way a native speaker would say them, you may need to practice deleted syllables. Even though people will understand you if clearly stress the right syllable, it's helpful to understand why native English speakers drop syllables so you recognize these words when you hear them! Learning to create clear contrast between stressed syllables and reduced ones will help you sound more natural.
FYI: The technical term for deleted syllables is syncope.
