I did some quick maths on this out of curiosity. A .22 short fires a bullet with about 95 joules of kinetic energy. Assuming a 15 gram pen going 80 m/s (about 180 mph), that gives a kinetic energy of 48 joules, about half that of the .22 short. Now .22 short is a pretty weak bullet… BUT ITS STILL A BULLET. On top of that, the pen has a very fine point that would allow it to exert an enormous pressure on contact. So yeah, if the pen can reach into the 150-200 mph range, it’s basically a super weak bullet. Freaky.

But, a pen would definitely not stay straight unless you added fins and the flipping of the pen would also slow it down, so it would be going much slower, and it's unlikely it would land tip-down so it probably wouldn't be too bad. Especially if it was a really light plastic pen that had a very low terminal velocity.

Center of gravity probably has less effect than the fact that the cap is wider and the ridge between body and cap creates drag, meaning the center of pressure (drag) is above the center of mass. Great video!
@ParoXyzmm
@ParoXyzmm Жыл бұрын
I realize this comment is 6 months old but. It's probably a combination of both, cap moves centre of mass forward, and also moves drag to the rear, putting it behind the centre of mass, this generally means that an object will be at least somewhat aerodynamically stable
@UnitSe7en
@UnitSe7en Жыл бұрын
Center of pressure is the term. The center of pressure is rearward because of drag forces on the cap, and the pen would seek to rotate around it's center of mass which is probably forward. It's balanced like a dart. Obviously.

@@punawelewele I mean, people lie on the internet all the time. You could be lying just to give yourself some validation for not liking the show. I mean, there have been plenty of times where Mythbusters have gotten myths wrong and even gone back and retested some instances with even more variables and got different results. The fact that you're going to "lose all respect" for the show because they got one instance of a myth wrong that you presumably recreated yourself says more about yourself than the show. But in relation to OPs post...they tested the penny drop test and came to the conclusion that while it could hurt you, a penny dropped from the Empire State building wouldn't be fatal. They even made a sort of launching device that could match the speeds of a penny reaching terminal velocity and shot it down at a skull in ballistic gel before Adam was convinced enough to put his own hand in the way and it didn't even break the skin. He said it stung a little but there was no way that it would end up with severe or life threatening injuries. The only way it could possibly cause serious injury is if you had a Nope situation where you happened to be looking up and the coin penetrated your eye cavity.

The pen in the tube test isn't valid, because the tube diameter is smaller than the length of the pen. The tube was serving as a guide, which helped keep the pen at the vertical. The drone drop test would be much more valid. The real test would be dropping the pen from a calibrated altitude, and measure the elapsed time from release to impact with the ground. That would give a more accurate idea of the terminal velocity of the pen. Typically, it would fall, heavy end first, considering the similar taper at both ends. This pen seems to be balanced right in the middle, so it does tend to tumble, hence the huge drop zone field. That lateral movement comes at the expense of terminal velocity. A pen will NOT follow the properties of something like a dart board dart. Obviously, a dart has fletching on the light end, and a heavy weight on the pin end. It will fall straight down, and it would go fast. Tossing something like that off a skyscraper would be way too dangerous for me to even suggest!

My guess is that your 60% point down pen is still flailing wildly on the way down and that it probably doesn't go over about 50 mph. Look at the difference between the depth in the dummy and the depth in the ground. Pens do not act like flechettes unless you shoot them out of a cannon.
@David-kn2il
@David-kn2il Жыл бұрын
I would agree. plus a wind tunnel test would probably show that it is possible but in real world with cross wind probably unlikely. That being said it is very irresponsible for anyone to drop anything off a sky scraper.
@phoenixburns79
@phoenixburns79 Жыл бұрын
This does show that its possible, though very unlikely. If the leaf blower test was actually at 180mph then a pen like this in ideal conditions could exceed the speeds necessary for the end result we get.
@petersmythe6462
@petersmythe6462 Жыл бұрын
@@phoenixburns79 No, as the pen was not tumbling freely in the leafblower test and would never be facing point-down long enough to do so. Just because it goes through a point-down phase of its flight does not mean it will do so for the ~6 seconds needed to go from low horizontal terminal velocity to high vertical orientation terminal velocity. It will most likely just fly past vertical for milliseconds, gain a few mph, and continue tumbling, losing that few mph. There is no reason it will ever balance for 6+ seconds at the unstable equilibrium point.
@petersmythe6462
@petersmythe6462 Жыл бұрын
@@David-kn2il Yeah but unless it's an actual fin-stabilized dart or a pretty large ball bearing, it's mostly just gonna annoy anyone below. Not punch a hole in them. In fact, there's a pretty good chance it'll never reach the street, either colliding back into the building or getting blown upwards faster than it can fall.
@petersmythe6462
@petersmythe6462 Жыл бұрын
@@phoenixburns79 Like, if by "possible but unlikely" you are implying the same sort of odds of throwing a sharp metal pencil on a flat metal surface and having it land upright and stay that way, perfectly balanced at a subatomic scale, sure. million standard deviations from the mean is technically possible. But we don't need to be concerned with those kinds of possibilities. No more than we need to be concerned about archers with finless arrows hitting something a couple hundred yards out.

@petersmythe6462

A few times mach if the air is cold/room temperature, though it depends on the length of barrel (to give longer acceleration distance and avoid crushing the pen from too much force), reservoir pressure (to give higher acceleration force), sabot area (to give higher acceleration force), and sabot weight relative to pen (to increase the fraction of force which is put into accelerating the pen, not the sabot).

Whatever it was that was driving/ helping the pen reach the top speed was probably carrying alot of potential energy which makes the test bias because it helped drive the pen into the skull, nonetheless a very cool test tho! I think it could go an inch or 2 with the same mph carrying nothing but it's own weight. Still enough for serious damage!

The tube that you tested the pen in kept the pen from varying from a straight down trajectory. In true free fall the pen would not maintain a nearly perfect point down trajectory. Any divergence from straight point down would slow the pen down considerably. The fact that the pen in your tube flopped around in the tube indicates that the pen was not keeping a straight down trajectory.

This was actually surprising... guess this shows and proves the "deadly pen" myth is, at the least, "plausible"... I can't really say "confirmed" as there are too many variables, however, we have seen that a pen CAN turn point down, and can, if conditions were exactly right, could travel over 150mph, however, again, however, in THIS study, there are just too many theoretical variables to 100% confirm this myth, but, at this time, it is plausible, which, to me, is still surprising...

The only thing he proved was, that a pen going 140mph can penetrate a skull and that SOME pens SOME times hit the ground upright. Didn't check wether the pen fell that way, didn't check for pen speed from the drone fall. Also flawed methodology with the leaf blower and test tube. The things he -dropped- gently put into the tube had no acceleration

Mythbusters, did the penny thing. It's all about terminal velocity.
