I love how does the drowning mechanic works in both games. Sonic has a music and the number appear to alarm the player when the time you dies. However, Freedom Planet's drowning mechanic has a clockwise ticking before death, with the music fading away. Things getting terrifying up at the end game level of the game (Final Dreadnought 3). Both we're good actually, but unfortunately Freedom Planet is my choice.

100% Sonic. The drowning music has been said multiple times to be one of the most horrifying songs in gaming history, and I agree.

Freedom Planet is at some point terrifying, the clock effect going inverted colors with just a "tic toc" with no music is scary, but as soon as you die, the normal music starts playing, meanwhile in Sonic Mania you hear a jingle going more and more fast as you feel more pressured, and the fact that you hear sonic drowning just makes Mania better.

I'm sorry, but all versions of the drowning music of the Sonic series really makes me panic to get out of the water or get an air bubble. The silence of Freedom Planet doesn't really do it for me other than general uneasiness.

After leaving this video three times, I uninstalled and reinstalled the updates to the app so I could watch it. Now that I'm done, I could safely say that the Sonic Mania one was more terrifying in my eyes. EDIT: However, the Freedom Planet one was terrifying too. 😨

If it wasn’t for the fact you can swim and have an accurate air meter i might say freedom planet, since it has a clock ticking and lack of music, but the normal music kicks in right after. Where as with sonic you have no idea when the timer starts and the music actually stays off

Psychologically, Freedom Planet does a better job of invoking pure fear. Sonic is more about tension, adrenaline, and panic. So to answer your question, science votes Freedom Planet.

Sonic's for sure. People are still traumatized by the infamous drowning theme even today. Plus the sound Sonic makes when you actually drown is a bit unsettling within itself. He also has a unique death sprite for drowning, unlike Freedom Planet who simply has the character fall over dead when they drown. Lastly, unlike Sonic, the FP characters can actually swim, their air supply lasts a lot longer than Sonic's, and it has a visible meter in the UI which takes a lot of the fear out of it. Part of why Sonic's is so scary is because it is sudden and it is canon that he can not swim to save his life. And the water-based zones in his games are usually some of the hardest levels in the franchise.

Freedom Planet's Drowning animation is more creepy in my opinion. It has a realistic Choking animation, it's like the character starts to inhale water and passes out. But I don't quite know how drowning looks like in Freedom Planet 2...

They're both scary in their own ways. Freedom Planet invokes a sense of dread and unease while Sonic games invoke a sense of panic and urgency.

The loud clockwise ticking of Freedom Planet is terrifying, and the music playing with the countdown bubbles of Sonic Mania is intense. I'd say Freedom Planet is more terrifying. Sonic Mania would be closer to the intense side of things, so they both get the point of drowning. It's an intense, and terrifying experience where your life is about to painfully end from your lungs flooding with water, and they captured the feeling perfectly. One leans closer to being terrifying, the other leans over to being intense. Also, that skull in Freedom Planet when the clock reaches midnight.. kill me oh my god.

Not only does it feel like you’re being pressured more and more to find air as the music progresses, but it also feels like sonic himself is panicking and getting desperate to survive while in freedom planet it feels like you’re just accepting your fate. Plus, from the amount of sonic games I’ve played, that music is drilled into my brain, and I instantly know how dangerous the situation is. In Sonic is scariest. I mean,that music traumatized million of people in those years till today. Freedom Planet...Nah. The air bar makes no fear. I mean,it's way too predictable to know when the character will drown.

I think sonic drowning is more terrifying because freedom planet has a long bar on the side that tells you how much time you have left, unlike sonic that unless you keep track of when you had air last, is pretty unexpected

The drowning theme from sonic is very iconic it tells you that you're gonna die if you don't get a bubble or get to the surface in time witch makes it anxiety filling not terrifying. freedom planet takes the cake for actually being terrifying in two ways. the first one being normally drowning, the music stops- you hear the ticking of a clock giving you the hint that your time is up, that is if you don't cheat death and find an air bubble or get out of the water and get some air. now time for the second reason. witch is actually the biggest reason of the two. (warning spoilers ahead) Later on in the game, you enter lord brevons ship fighting your way through countless enemey's, and making your way into the control room to shut down the system he plans to use too steal the kingdom stone's energy. though at one point when making your way through the ship, brevon tells lilac something- something that put me a bit on edge. he claimed that unlike lilac, his army dose not require oxygen, he then turns off the oxygen in the part of the ship where lilac is located, attempting to suffocate her to death.. again the clock ticks, but now you know for a fact that sense there are no air bubbles in the ship, how the hell will lilac survive? you then find milla and she helps you by giving lilac a bubble shield, but it truly is a terrifying experience, especially when the bubble pops from getting hit too much and you have to find milla again in a certent amount of time. and to add insult to injury, when lilac dies in any way on that ship, brevon laughs at lilac for her failure her suffering, and yes... her suffocation.

For me I don't find the Sonic drowning theme scary anymore I used to as a child and that's only because I forgot I said it as my alarm as a joke and I woke up in the middle of the night to that and it gets progressively louder and all my lights were off. it's less terrifying in freedom planet 2. instead of a countdown, when the oxygen meter is about to reach empty an alarm will play and once it reaches empty, the playable character will rapidly lose health and die.

Freedom Planet Drowning Is More Creepier Than Sonic Mania

It should be said that in Freedom Planet there is very little chance you will actually drown in any of the water filled stages. All characters can swim, there's very little loss of movement speed, and air bubble sources give air directly instead of the Sonic 'randomly timed bubble spawns'. Instead, the drowning mechanic is used as an oxygen timer for one of the last levels aboard the Dreadnaught space ship. Main Villain decides to remove the oxygen supply from the segment of the ship you're in, the already stressful music of the stage quietening to nothing is perfectly suited. Sonic "oH i'M sO tRaMaTiZeD bY tHaT mUsIc".

To be honest I prefer Sonics drowning. I like the beat more than freedom planet and it’s a little more scarier in my opinion.

My pick would have to be Sonic Mania. The ticking in Freedom Planet is scary, yes, but it doesn't produce nearly as much tension as the drowning theme in Sonic, which goes faster and faster as the seconds remaining go away. There also isn't as much release to it. With Sonic Mania, your character falls into the vast sea, there is even a special animation for it, whereas in Freedom Planet, your character just falls onto the ground, like any normal death animation. That's probably what makes me prefer Sonic Mania. The buildup is more intense, and the punishment is more serious and generally creepy.
