Ocular discomfort is one of the most common reasons for patients seeking ophthalmic care, with millions of patients diagnosed as dry eye disease. However, a subset of these patients have chronic neuropathic corneal pain (NCP), that are related to diseases and surgeries, as well as systemic conditions and therapies, that may mimic dry eye disease and are thus under diagnosed. While NCP is highly debilitating and poorly understood condition, it is a treatable condition if diagnosed properly, through a combination of nerve regenerating eyedrops, oral and device treatments changing nerve function, amniotic membranes, and life style changes, among others. Early intervention results in more rapid improvement in patients. Drs. Pedram Hamrah, Gabriela Dieckman, and Anat Galor explain the disease, discuss treatment options, and provide several patient testimonials.

I’ve had over two dozen eye visits since April 2021. I self-referred to a local corneal specialist who diagnosed this in September 2022. I’ve tried about everything he can think of, so I’m scheduled to go to Boston late summer. This gave me some hope. Fingers crossed.

I cried when I watched this video. I have had excruciating eye pain for three years with no help from the many ophthalmologists I have visited all over the country. My last corneal specialist always insisted that my eyes look great. He never believed me- he thought I was an hysterical woman. I found Dr Hamrah by reading the article about him in The Wall St Journal. Finally a doctor can possibly help me. I look forward to my appointment with Dr. Hamrah!

I'm experiencing the systems of this disease. Thank you for this video. It brings me despair to realize this is what is happening to me after LASIK but at least there is some hope.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR CREATING THIS VIDEO! I've had CN for 16 years. I remember the Stone Ages when no doctor believed me and would just tell me I had a little dry eye and they couldn't understand why my pain was so severe. "Pain without Stain". Ugh. Heck, just recently my, now former, neurologist told me to do mindfulness meditation after he tried only 2 "different" pain meds on me (gabapentine and Lyrica) both of which had severe cognitive side effects which I'm still recovering from a year later.

Thanks for researching about this nightmare disease. I live in Montreal and since I have so much trouble working because of this disease, I dont have enough money to get a trip to Boston and meet dr. Hamrah and get myself checked up by the confocal...

Unfortunately, corneal neuropathic pain seems to be very rare or unfamiliar to doctors here in Africa. As a result, I have been struggling without proper treatment and in extreme discomfort.

I suffer from this disease, I was 6 months without knowing what it was that made me feel so much pain, I am a little better but without living a normal life (I can not see screens for a long time for example). I hope you can find the cure or an effective treatment that reaches the whole world, I am from Argentina and it would be impossible for me to go there to try some of their treatments. I know many people from less developed countries that suffer from this and without knowing yet that they have, I try to help him at least in South America.

I’m having a severe eye pain problem after lasik surgery. I have done all the treatments of dry eye but nothing works. Today my doctor told me that you might have corneal neuropathic pain and it’s not curable.

This video was a revalation to me today ,since having catheract surgery x2 years ago began having severe eye pain 4 months after surgery, went constantly back to Opt asking why I was getting this pain,he kept telling me it was migrains,I told him 'pain not in my head' but as though eye ball was going to blow up,the pain was so bad,',then a year later went for an eye test and told me sight in my right eye was as bad as before had surgery(said it hadn't worked,so he booked me in for laser treatment, which I went along with his recommendation, now 4 months has passed now since this treatment and the pain has come back even worse now.I live in the UK and at a loss to find anyone to give me a definate answer as to what is wrong. The pain is so debilitating ,I actually groan all day long, eye watering ,feel as though there is glass in my eye.If anyone knows who to go to in the UK I would be grateful to find out what's wrong.
