Children are like sponges soaking up our emotions and behaviors. They often pick up and mirror our anxieties without us even realizing. In this episode, Dr. Shefali helps two mothers discover how their own patterns are getting in the way of connecting to their kids.
Dr. Shefali is a NYT bestselling author of The Conscious Parent, and The Awakened Family. She is also a clinical psychologist, an international speaker and a wisdom teacher, integrating Eastern philosophy with Western psychology.

Both of my parents have died. I myself am seventy six years old. My father was born in 1913 in Baltimore Maryland. My mother in 1917 in Louisville Kentucky. They met in 1943 while my father was in tank school after completing officer candidate school. They were only able to see each other on weekends. A very short courtship. They got married and he departed for the war. Like most returning veterans, they started their families right after the war and had babies in succession, on after another. The result was four boys. Things fell apart when I, the second son, was nine years old. Not because of me. Daddy had what was then called a nervous breakdown. Today we might call it PTSD. Treatment for veterans in those days involved electroshock therapy. My parents did what most parents did in those days. Beat their children. My teachers did what most teachers did in those days. Beat their students. My brothers and I became what children in those days became. There was no self reflection in those days. I lost more than a few of my friends to suicide. Hard times.

Thank you so much Dr Shefali. So helpful. I now understand better my relationship with food and how my daughter is restrictive with her food too. I became rebel towards food and now need to become at peace with it so my daughter is better too. I’m learning so much with your podcasts. I’ve discovered you thanks to Mel Robbins.

Thank you so much Dr. Shefali! I too had a strong willed child who sent me off into this mind blowing journey on presence and growth. I was having this strong feeling that this was the way to parent but I was insecure and unsure specifically under the pressure of people in my environment and my partner. Now I stand firm and proud because I feel validated in that the path that I am on is the right one thanks to you! And my children are responding with compassion and love already. I feel so happy and thankful that I fell in on this path while my children are relatively young and I hopefully can strengthen their essence and give them the childhood they deserve.

@@doctorshefali I love the podcasts! Could you please make more on helping siblings navigate sibling fighting. My kids explode quickly and then keep exploding and there's screaming at each other and it's very difficult to get everyone to calm down and find a solution. Age 8 and 11.
