It's time I took my washed fleeces and got them in shape for spinning. Today we're going to work with a cross fleece (not angry, just a crossbreed) and run it through my drum carders. Let's go!

I absolutely enjoyed this demonstration! I have been spinning for a few years and just finally got a drum carder a couple of months ago. You hit every point I have found most important about drum carding, including adjustments, in one video!! Thank you so much!🙏

Hi hope things are good with you. Great video thank you I have got some Gotland mix fleece (not sure what it’s been bred with) which I have just washed. Do I card it as you have just done or do I feed it onto the drum carder from the cut or the tip end ?
@bffiberarts
@bffiberarts 10 күн бұрын
@suefisher5531 either way will work. If you're trying to keep it organized more like a top than a roving, then just make sure you feed them on the same way everytime and note how they align as you take the batt off so you keep feeding it in the same direction. It'll work better if you open up the locks a bit before you feed them on and usually starting at the cut end will work better but try both and see what works for you.

I’m having a heck of a time with my Louet drum carder. No matter how I adjust it, it doesn’t spread the fibres on the drum well. It just deposits them on top.

Hello, I am new to picking and bought an upright picker. What you’re doing by hand in his video here is what I can do in my picker, correct? I can then run it through my Drum Carder?
@bffiberarts
@bffiberarts Жыл бұрын
Yes exactly. Just be careful with fine fibers because the picker can tear them apart and you'll have nepps in your batts.

you just reminded me that i have about four whole fleeces that have been washed and are waiting to be carded since last Spring/Summer. i need to get that done soon so i can justify buying a fleece or two this Spring. i'm on the lookout for a breed study starting with raw wool, if anyone knows of such a thing... or if someone would be willing to organize one.

@@bffiberarts i saw your fleece haul(s) last year. mine was not nearly as insane. i've already spun up a couple of them, and i have a couple more carded and ready to go, plus the four waiting to be carded. 'twould seem that i was consoling myself with wool in 2020. pretty certain i was not alone in that.

Locks. Very short wool cut from the fleece by shearers. Either short wool from around the points or second cuts caused when shearers lift the handpiece off the skin and then shear the short fires left on the skin to tidy up. Why use those? Why not use staples?
@bffiberarts
@bffiberarts 11 ай бұрын
They're not short or second cuts. Locks of fiber are staples. Same thing, different word.

@@bffiberarts I've owned 3000 sheep & at shearing time locks are under the skirting table & sold in bales as short lengths. Fleeces that are made up of staples, are classed separately.

@rosertaylor6139 perhaps you're in a different country and that's how it works there, but on my channel we do not get hung up on terms that are used differently. If you find that distressing then perhaps this isn't the channel for you.
