what's fun is that Animals as Leaders is miles ahead of where they were when I discovered them in 2011ish. Navene left and Matt came along, injecting this different kind of fervor into the percussion. Navene had an indelible imprint on the nature of the music, but Matt took it to another dimension. If you go back and watch his university footage, it was always a matter of when he would shock the world, and with which musical outfit, but never a question of "if". He is a master in theory and performance. He's just a real treat to watch.

So I purchase every lesson/transcription that Matt puts out because they are so educational. For monomyth, which I highly recommend buying the transcription, look what he notes about the C section of the song…. “This part of the C section is particularly hard because there are so many rhythms nested in other rhythms. Take a look at the tom & snare Sequence(23 223 223 23 23 223) occuring within the triplet structure. if boiled down, it sounds like 577557. Inside of each of the 2's, we are placing 3 notes. Inside of the 3's, we are placing 5 notes. So the 3 over 2(in triplets) would essentially be a third of a nontuplet, while the the 5 over 3(triplet) would essentially be a quintuplet. The tough part is that these quintuplets are occuring on different partials of the triplet, so you will have to be quite good at feeling quintuplets and keeping them even. Practice! Practice! Your ear should remain feeling the 2's & 3's pattern in triplets in 6, while your limbs will be playing the 3's over 2's and 5's over 3's in triplets.” 😂😂😂😂🤯🤯🤯🤯😢😢😢 Also I would definitely go back and listen to their older stuff because it will probably help see how they got to this type of writing. Its like a mixture of Allan Holdsworth, Meshuggah and King Crimson

What's more impressive about that intro to me is that Matt seems to be alternating the double bass strokes, going RLR LRL and cycling back. Doing this at that speed with your hands is difficult enough; doing it with your feet is just ridiculous.
@XJoeyJordison666X
@XJoeyJordison666X 2 жыл бұрын
He just explained that he basically does this because when it resolves back to a new bar it would end on the right foot and he would've had to relearn the pattern with left foot lead, which was going to make it more complicated than it needed to be
@jidenshaotoko
@jidenshaotoko 2 жыл бұрын
@@XJoeyJordison666X I saw his video. I guess his main reasoning behind the alternating pattern is that despite being a lot more technically demanding, it allows him to play it at the speed that the song needs. Trying to do it with a straight RLR RLR pattern is possible, but ridiculously difficult to keep as powerful and as clean as Matt has.

This is probably the best way to digest AAL - focus on each musician. You WANT to know what each musician is doing. When they are together, you don't know what to focus upon - it is soooo complex. Tosin is a genius....who did not graduate high school, if you can imagine.

SIDE NOTE: Possibly the most beautiful drum set ever. Garstka makes shit look so easy. His meter ,feel and "in betweens" are nuts . Tosin Abasi as band Leader (see what I did there?) is a string sorcerer and Matt fits perfectly into this universe. Bottomline the music is other worldly.

One thing I'm noticing about these new AAL tracks is how less room there is for improvising. Like in Joy of Motion the drum parts were obviously insane and well written but there seemed to be some "restraint" given in certain fill sections so Matt could freely improvise over them during live shows. There seemed to be less of this on "Madness of Many" and even less on this new album. I'll be interested to hear how Matt plays this pieces live, if he'll play them almost exactly as on record or continue to chop all over the tracks as if nothing is limiting him.

The band discussed the song writing process with Rick Beato a few weeks ago. A lot of it comes down to taking exercises, new techniques, and effects they find interesting and fleshing them out into songs that lets them explore those further. One great example is one of their new tracks "Red Miso" which started with finding a new delay effect they really liked the sound of. I'd suggest that playthrough next.

Animals as Leaders is a pretty difficult band to get into sometimes for sure. Obviously the technical prowess is a huge hit to any casual lister, even someone who knows their stuff as well, they're just that good at what they do. There are some more melodic songs that they have too, for something along those lines I would recommend songs like The Brain Dance or Air Chrysalis. Definitely a band worth digging into some more in my opinion :^) Keep up the prog yo

If you're in for some even more confusing stuff, I recommend checking out some of his work with Casimir Liberski and Louis de Mieulle. His stylistic versatility really shines there: fusion, pop, latin, jazz influences all over -- and a fair amount of more "meat and potatoes" drumming, laid on top of viciously complex patterns / time sigs / modulations. Somewhere out there is a Violente Absinthe playthrough of his which you could take a look at!

Matt has spoken about how they come up with the composition. He said that Tosin Abasi (the lead guitarist), usually comes up with the ideas and notes for the songs, but for this specific song Matt came up with the beat (the 2 3 3 2 2 3) and they went from there

Haha in an interview Tosin did, he did say some of their songs are built to convey that very feeling.

No matter how many times I listen to AAL, it still blows my mind that they are only 2 guitar players and a drummer. Luke Holland - Mirrors

I feel like previous AAL albums had more melody whereas this new material is very percussive. Any of Matt's playthroughs are worth watching! Definitely try to watch some live drum cams as he goes off while Tosin and Javier vamp on a part. "Tempting Time", "Wave of Babies", "Physical Education" all have parts where he just lets loose live.

Madness of many was to rhythmic and percussive for me, I feel like the new album takes that sound from the madness of many and adds a bit more groove and melody

Matt is a beast. How does he keep up with the time signatures?

I know Matt has talked about how he reads music and is cognitive of time signatures and is really intune with that as opposed to just “drumming”

Hmmmm...I didn't realize Matt switched to DW from Tama. Oh well- either set sounds/tunes nice- he's still using Meinls for that attack sound. Listening to him and Thomas Haake from Meshuggah is a deeply religious Percussion experience. BTW, have you watched Mike Mangini from Dream Theater playing at Zildjian's Drummers Conference? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l6qEjLqo1snMmIU.html

I don't know what it is . But it's obviously very skilful. I don't really like thrashy music in general . This sounds more jazz or prog to me fundamentally. It reminds me a bit of Ozric Tentacles whom I love but this is a bit heavier guitar and bass . I also like Slipknot in small doses . This is somewhere inbetween to my uneducated ears . Any way ,my head just fell off with the complexity so thanks Andrew for sharing this . I know we are both staggered by the talent out there . From one meat and potatoes drummer to another . Peace and love brother 👍🏻☮❤

Nerdy stuff for sure, but interesting. Somehow clinical, but love it anyway. Tiresome, lacks those easy melodies, places for rest. Yes, do more AAL.
