Are you fishing for requests? You're in luck then 🙂 You might want to react to an amazing drummer that has a similar feel to the backbeat like Gavin here: Christian Eigner Never heard of him? He's just the drummer for a little band called Depeche Mode. With DM "Walking in my shoes" is a tip, but he also has a demo video on YT for austrian audio that might be fun to watch to all the drum-geeks here. Check him out, because this man has waaaaay too few reactions on KZfaq

His level of improv is off the chart. Listening to that part in “Way Out Of Here” on the album version is insane. But then every live version is different and just as insane! I honestly have no idea how someone can be that on-the-spot creative and precise all at the same time. Just ridiculous.

I was at his clinic in a small drum store - about 50 people- and he asked for questions. Each of us fed him a question about Anesthetize. He showed us the chops. After about the 5th question he smiled and said “yeah I can see where this is going, I might as well play the whole thing through” to which we all cheered. Being only a few feet from the riser was brilliant, every bit of stick action was clear.

@oforsberg
@oforsberg Жыл бұрын
I think the bass drum-snare beat is actually 7/16 long, not 7/4 long. Furthermore, I don't think that's the beautiful or clever part of the groove, as the part is written in 7/4 (the main riff going repeatedly in 3/4 and 4/4) so the drum beat naturally fits the length of the riff (you can count Harrison hit the snare four times every one cycle of the riff). The beauty is in how Harrison not only has managed to find a groove that doesn't go perfectly in sync together with the riff (meaning 7/16 does not add up to either 3/4 or 4/4 that well) yet supports the guitar figure wonderfully while resolving every four cycles of the groove (aka. one cycle of the guitar riff), but he also manages to keep a steady quarter note hi-hat pulse on top of the groove, making it easy for the listener to think that the verse is in 4/4!

Nice reaction and thank you also, great advices during the video! Sound of muzak was the first song of porcupine tree and Gavin Harrison I discovered in 2004 when I got the sheets for the drum part as a playalong. I learned A LOT from that and after you get comfortable with the rhythm it's much fun to play! And sure when watching Gavin it looks so easy and he is so chilled, with even more complex fills than in the original song. And as you said, soooo so tasty and great musicality

Gavin Harrison is the PERFECT drummer. Your critique of him, like that of him on Anesthetize, is spot on! He's my favourite drummer today! I saw Simon Phillips at his Auckland drum clinic in '79 or '80, (I'm from Glenfield, now living in London) and never thought I'd see better than him ever, but man, Gavin is something REALLY special! Now, if you haven't done a Jojo Mayer appraisal please check out: Jojo Mayer & NERVE, LIVE - Drumeo Festival 2020. It's a brilliant short clip, 4:54 but he's well worth watching. He's a single kick drummer, orthodox AND matched grip and he's "different" from everyone else. Think you'll like this clip!

Sir. I have been a fan of Prog since the late 60s on and discovered Porcpine Tree in the 90s. I have been a fan ever since and have seen them live in Glasgow. However, I have learnt so much watching your reactions. I am paying much closer attention to all drumming now. You have educated me at my tender age of 69. Loved the video... I couldn't keep time to save my life.. but I'm experienced enough to know a true craftsman when I see one.. It's always sublime listening to Porcupine Tree with Gavin. Watched a promotional interview that Steve Wilson and Richard Barbierrie were doing for their new album... and one of the questions was about how they liked the youtibe reaction videos to their music and they both looked at each other and said... "it's all about Gavin isn't it..."... Well, Porcupine Tree is much more than that but at least so many people out there actually appreciate him for the musician he is. Keep on Rocking.

As a guitar player the ghost notes seem to remind me that the snare is still there. Yes the texture it lays underneath is the key but especially in signatures outside of 4/4 it helps the groove move along from phrase to phrase. It both adds dynamics to the crack of the snare but softens it on the other side, on the way to next crack

If you really want a tasty Gavin Beat... (Gav brought the beat to the band BTW, for them to fit music around his cool beat), you MUST hear "Bonnie the Cat". It's In 4/4 this song has Gavin's most unique way of tricking the ear to make you feel like the song is Not is 4/4. But it is so solid that the trained ear will spot it.

Gavin... modern day drum God. I saw him at a small venue clinic (20 people max) What I took away from that clinic you hit on perfectly Andrew. In fact Gavin made a massive point about playing the song. He may dress it up with his prowess, however he never forgets (like counting back in) that his part is to keep a solid meter. A lot of PT and TPT fans grew from Steven Wilson's/Bruce Soord's amazing song writing. Gavin explained to our clinic that he must lay down a foundation for his part so the non-trained ear, the non-musician can feel a constant pulse, even through odd meters and such.

His version at the modern drummer festival was better for me the pulse is always bang on but when he does his embellishments that do vary per recording that I've seen the MD festival stands out

Gavin Harrison is probably one of the best musicians in modernity. To describe him as merely a “drummer” is to completely ignore his incredible musicality.

I'd never really thought about it... but there is a distinction between seeing all of the video (but smaller) vs seeing most of the video (minus the upper corner - but bigger). Seems like no matter which corner he choses, he'll be covering some part of the kit. Interesting.

I think it's fascinating, that the initial groove was written by Steven Wilson on a drum computer and then been enhanced by the playing of Gavin. He once said in an drumeo interview, that this counts as one of his most iconic grooves but it was not written by him in the first place. But nontheless he is the one making it great and bringing it to live. The combination Wilson and Harrison was the best! This is the video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y9d2aKiYvK24o40.html
