Somewhere in the making of Emperor of Sand videos, the bassist, Troy, calls Brann a mountain with octopus arms and legs saying he has to look back at him on stage from time to time to make sure he's still human. I personally can't think of another drummer that can fit so many intense fills throughout songs without it feeling excessive, it just always feels right. And he's a helluva singer too. He might not always sound the best singing live, but when you've got an hour and a half of drumming like this I think it's understandable. He did the vocals on Two Minutes to Late Night's covers of Over the Mountain and No Presents for Christmas. Almost feels like it should be illegal for one person to be able to nail Ozzy and King Diamond vocals and also absolutely tear up the kit with songs like Last Baron.

He's the single strokes master of today and his strength/endurance is as top tier as it gets. He's also a consistent ghost note fellow which I admire. I sometimes try to play this when feeling very energized because its exhausting 😅. I still cant fully play it as my arms/wrists start shutting down, but thats always trying to use 2b sticks for me and I probably need to try just regular 5a for this song to see if I can last longer. Epic piece and drummer Brann is.

Mastodon are a very important band to me, they write a lot of songs that are deep emotionally despite not outwardly seeming so. Emperor of Sand for example is an album with a story of an exile in the desert being hunted by a Sultan, he has a death sentence, Metaphorically the album is entirely about Cancer. Crack the Skye (The Song) is about Brann Dailor's sister Skye who died young, The Hunter is about Brent's Brother, and the Hushed and Grim double album is a eulogy for the band's manager Nick John. All four members have been together with no line up changes for 24 years now, all are absolutely mindblowing musicians and songwriters in their own right, have various side projects and solo work, but when they come together in Mastodon it truly is something otherworldly.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums Yessir! Story goes that Bill and Brann moved down to Georgia from New York after being in two separate bands together, looking for a new one, met Troy and Brent who were also in bands together and hit it off at a High on Fire show in 1999. Mastodon formed there and then. The got a singer briefly, Eric Saner but it didnt work out so vocals were needed and without rambling too much today all four members sing live, however only three of them sing in the studio recordings.

Maybe you only know newer Mastodon? My top three albums - Leviathan - Blood Mountain - Crack the Skye (album this song is from) And those three albums came out three in a row, in that order. Leviathan was their second full length album, but I believe it was their first major label release. It’s their breakout album. In my opinion, all their albums after those three are good, but just not the same.

Finding a video that shows off how good Brann actually is is hard because he's a beast. This is a great video for that. The fact that he sings lead on a lot of songs while playing like this is crazy (albeit he simplifies some of it while performing live). Tasteful toms galore. Also the dog on his drums is 'Precious'... Buffalo Bill's Dog from silence of the Lambs. Love that you can feel the emotion in Mastodon's work. For your own listening I'd recommend Oblivion.

Was standing outside the Showbox in seattle in 2004, just watched Mastodon. My friend and I are standing there blown away by the performance. Then we hear "have fun guys?" We look between us and its Brann the mann. "Yes"...😮..."you guys wanna go get some beers across the street?" ..."Yes😮". Partied with Mastodon, Kat Von D, and Matt Bayless, producer of Blood Mountian, for the rest of the night. Was a night ill never forgt. Incredibly nice guys, all of them. This guy will go down as one of the very best to ever do it, and we are all blessed to be alive to witness him as he evolves. Thank you Brann!

There is no single one main composer it depends album to album, like on hushed and grim it was bill and Brann, CTS was Brent with the biggest role and then Brann. It really just switches up album to album, in recent years it’s definitely been Brann and bill tho but there has never really been 1 main composer throughout their history. Brann and bill write together and jam together a ton tho so they’ve been a super prominent writing duo in recent years for mastodon

Fantastic review Andrew. 👏 I saw them open for Slayer many moons ago. I love Slayer, but Mastodon stole the show. Brann is a monster. 🤘

Brann Dailor is the kind of drummer where you didn't realize you were holding your breath the entire performance. Incredible.

I've heard a little mastadon before and never got the hype. NOW I get it. Like Tool and King Crimson, i don't know If I'd listen to them a lot but I can see there being times where I'd be "I need some something to take over my brain"

The best modern metal drummer out there. I don't drum, I know next to nothing about drumming. I always knew Brann was an incredible drummer, but I see actual drummers watch with the same awestruck expression I fully appreciate just how talented this man is.

Very nice! Glad you got to this! Brann is easily one of my favorite drummers in rock/metal and has been for a while. He killed this live. SPEAKING of DRUMEO lives, Blake Richardson did a Drumeo appearance recently and there will be videos of him doing songs like this and or playing songs without knowing them so PLEASE do some more of that monster. It's been a while since you did a video on him.

I'm so blessed to have seen them during the 10th anniversary tour of Crack the Skye that Brann mentions at the end. He sounds incredible here, but the entire band live is a truly incredible experience!

Since Levithan’s release, I have been a hardcore Mastodon fan. And the biggest reason why is Brann. I’m not a drummer, but that guy just does it for me, man. Imo, Crack the Skye was his best work.

You can probably see why Brann said "shit" before having to play this song, it's a hauling song and quite epic in its epicness. It's actually fun to play to, I haven't played to any Mastodon tunes for ages. I do adore the entire "Crack The Skye" album, dedicated to Skye Dailor (Brann's sister) & put together after Brent Hinds was hospitalized after being beaten into a coma; he basically conceived the music in his hospital bed when he was able & Brann and the other bandmembers helped with the album's overall concept. Great song, fantastic band with a great body of work to their credit.

Thank you so much for doing this! When Drumeo dropped this and I saw the video was an hour long my jaw dropped, and when I saw Last Baron was in the middle I absolutely freaked out. Glad it hit you in the feels, this whole album "Crack the Skye" is in reference to Brann's younger sister Skye passing. Drumeo is doing incredible work lately

It's pretty awesome that Brann says Bill Ward is one of his favorite drummers (and didn't I just see in the drumeo video last month that Bill Ward told him on an Ozzfest that he liked what Brann was doing as well).
