I wouldn't say Ryder was playing with Jim as much as vetting him--making him strong enough to kill him. From the opening "I want you to stop me" it was always my take on the movie that Ryder was looking for someone worthy of ending his torment. Perhaps by ejecting Ryder out the door, Jim showed the qualities Ryder was looking for. The pennies on the eyes "What do you want with me?/You figure it out" scene also seems to suggest the same--especially when Ryder gives him the bullets for the gun. I always saw this movie as "intelligent horror" and maybe that explains its cult-only following. Anyway, I've never forgotten it.
@terrorble727
@terrorble727 6 ай бұрын
Coins on the eyes signifies payment to the ferryman for travel to the underworld, Ryder is analogizing his sacrifice to turn Jim from a scared boy into a hardened killer, which we don't fully comprehend until the final scene. This whole movie is littered with visual and moral poetry like this, how Jim caresses John's hair with a shotgun showing his respect for the man even after all he's put him through. Absolutely underrated art.

I like what Rutger said in the BTS is that Ryder wants to die, but doesn’t have the guts to do the deed himself. So he just chose the one person he felt could stop him which happened to be Jim

I feel proud as a Dutch man myself how you talk about Rutger Hauer. He was one of the best actors and a legend that came from my country. Next to the best actrice thats there now, Carice van Houten. And this also makes me so proud. We are such a small country against the rest of the world, but this are two of a few persons that placed Holland on the map. Also Paul Verhoeven as a director. Also makes me very proud. The Hitcher is definitely a awesome movie and Rutger Hauer played his role so good. You actually believe it and he really is like that. What a legend. R.i.p Rutger Hauer. And thank you Lee for praising this. ❤

Nice! Breaking out an ol VHS copy of The Hitcher! Absolutely a great on the road thriller and one of the best sleeper horror films of the 80s. When i was a kid, Rutger Hauer creeped the shit out of me in this, over how deadpan serious and evil he was. Nice review Lee! And a good call from Brat Queen on this one. Movie never gets the love it deserves! And on a side note, this makes for a great triple feature alongside Joyride and a very under mentioned film, Nature of the Beast featuring Eric Roberts and Lance Henriksen

Another villain who likes to toy with his potential victims is Anton Chigurh; not always, but when he does he takes obvious pleasure in it: the coin flips with his "friendo" gas station proprietor and Llewellyn Moss' widow, the banter with Carson Wells before the phone rings, and the unidentified desert motorist whom he very politely asks him to please "step out of the car, sir", and in an equally smiling, friendly tone asks him to hold still as he calmly & quietly puts a cattle gun to the man's forehead and kills him. There's definitely a little Joker DNA in there, as there is with John Ryder.

I have just seen this movie yesterday for the first time. I liked it. I had an issue with it's flow, the way it's built from segments, like game stages, one happens after another with a feeling of somekind of the reset, I don't know how to explain that. It's hard to tell if it was directors' concious decission, or not. But overall dreamy and intense atmosphere, great cinematography, great score and amazing Rutger made me enyoy this movie. Very interesting thriller, with some even slasher/horror vibe to it, to some extend. Also for some reason it remined me about Near Dark then I saw one of the writters workd on ND.

Completely with you on this. The Hitcher is such an underrated movie and really a mini masterpiece for me. Rutger Hauer is incredible and the whole film has a stark, eerie atmosphere to it that is totally unique. Could be an unpopular opinion, but I actually really had fun with the remake. Despite being vastly inferior to the original, I found it to be a half decent throwaway popcorn flick. Just saw it and loved it! However, until the last half hour, Ryder could’ve been a figment of his imagination. I was actually hoping that was the case! Nonetheless a terrific film, and I was definitely reminded of the Joker, so no surprise that it’s one of Nolan’s favorites. Again, would have been even scarier if Ryder wasn’t real, but very enjoyable.

The Hitcher is one of my favorite horror movies. I saw it at the theatre when it came out, had the VHS and then bought the DVD. The remake was awful. You're exactly right about John Ryder playing with Jim, but it's kind of a perverted, twisted sexual game going on here. The sexual subtext couldn't be more clear. The performances are all top-notch and give Eric Red credit for the script. Another review that I completely agree with. Thanks man. Looking forward to seeing more of you next year.
