It's not the time signatures, the rhythm, the showmanship, the precision, the creativity, the variety in cymbal land, the speed with hands and feet. It's how effortless Mike goes through a song. He has fun, while playing brain numbing compositions. He is truly an inspiring drummer.

I've always preferred his drumming to that of Mangini. Both great drummers but Portnoy just seems to have more finesse. My point is best shown by watching each of them playing Finally Free live. Maybe you could do a comparison video reaction.

Aye that’s a great idea! Thank you for the suggestion. Portnoy was the OG drummer and mangini is the new guy right? I don’t know much about dream theater

@@TheGhostNotePodcast Yes, that's correct.

Yes agreed. While I like both Mikes, Portnoy is the more "human" drummer. He is more emotive, more musical, and a better showman. Not to mention his drum tone has always been far superior (though Mangini's kit sounds amazing on AVFTTOTW). Portnoy is the far better songwriter too, contributing in big ways to some of DT's best songs.

I think Portnoy is the showman and Mangini is the technician.

Mike Portnoy is no joke, my friend. Neil Peart is a favorite of mine, but I grew up listening to Zeppelin with Bonham, so It's really hard to pick a favorite. They are all great in their own way. Portnoy and Peart were friends for quite a number of years before Neil's untimely demise... Rest in power, Professor...

If you're referring to the lead sound during the beginning of the solo as the "guitar pro" sound- it's a synthesizer. Their keyboardist Jordan Rudess is a god.

What I love about him, is not only is he doing what a drummer should do by keeping time, but he also provide a counter melody that could stand on its own

There’s so much going on in this song, I especially like his use of cymbals and his fills are incredible. Additionally the rhythm section drives this song forward with Portnoy, Myung and Ruddes hold that down and pushing it fiercely forward. Check out Constant Motion by Dream Theater,,Cygnus X-1 Book 1 from Rush and Pnuma by Tool for more progressive rock greatness.

This particular song isn't as complicated as they usually tend to go with regards to time signatures etc. It is a great song though. Petrucci is the guitarist and probably the best guitarist ever to walk the earth
@21centdregs

yikes, let's take a vote on best guitarist to ever walk the earth and poll every human on the planet, petrucci might be 90th percentile. but hey, we all have our opinions
@wilko6679
@wilko6679 Жыл бұрын
@21centdregs 90th is a stretch... and opinions are fine... I look at technique, consistency, writing, technicality, precision and overall ability. If you were to throw a random guitarist in the argument you'd have to ask the question... can he do everything Petrucci can do? And can Petrucci do everything he can do?

John is my favorite guitarist ever, my favorite overall musician, and hell - he is my favorite PERSON (aside for family and friends). And he has written my favorite music ever. But in a world with Guthrie Govan in it, I can't consider JP the best guitarist. (This is subjective of course). GG just has too much in the toolbox - hybrid picking, some of the best 2 hand-tapping and legato, insane funk strumming, country chicken picking, traditional shredding, and the single thing that sets them apart is improv skills. JP is decent at improvising, but Guthrie can improvise things that most guitarists couldn't write if you gave them a year. In terms of writing though, JP writes some of the most amazing melodies/riffs/songs and this is what is most important to me. This is why I like JP better overall.

If really want to get a sound like that via a Samsung or IPHONE it just won't happen. The amount of hard work that goes in to this vid getting a crazy awesome drum sound isn't easy , it takes alot of work. Then maybe multiple takes to get it right. Some people think yeah , no problem. Drum On

They're called "Octobans". Rototoms are the toms without a shell that you can tune up and down in pitch by rotating the drumhead / rim.

Portnoy is a beast. He can play complex stuff like this but he is also very good at turning it down when needed like he does with his band the Winery Dogs. As someone else stated, I prefer portnoy over Mangini as well. Mangini is fast as hell and very technical but Portnoy plays with more feeling and….what’s the word….maybe has Ben better dynamics? Basically I find his playing to vary a lot whereas Mangini is more robotic. Maybe dynamics is not the right word. Not sure.
@CompleteProducer84
@CompleteProducer84 Жыл бұрын
Yeah dynamics is actually a great word to use in this situation. Mike has more of a dynamic range on the kit, and he also has a more human feel in terms of his timing. Mangini is almost too precise at times. Still both amazing drummers, but I will always prefer MP

@@CompleteProducer84 I’m starting to learn terminology from my kids. My oldest is 16 and heavy into bass with his school jazz band, jazz combo and now has a weekly “gig” at a church and he’s tried to explain to me how he doesn’t like to use a lot of compression because it limits his ability to add dynamics on songs where he can improvise more. I just shake my head yes at him as he speaks. Lol. I guess some of it is sticking.

@@CompleteProducer84, @mpkelley20 I feel the need to jump in here as I've been a fan of DT for over 30 years and I don't like the band better with one over the other. I have found myself listening to Mangini stuff almost exclusively lately and I'm not sure if that's because it's newer so I've heard less of it or because the Portnoy stuff is kinda old now (I'm still a huge fan though). My take on the band and the drummers is Portnoy has much more charisma and charm and truly has fun when he plays or at least emotes it more effectively while Mangini seems more "at work". What that conveys to me is that Portnoy is more relaxed and thus more fun while Mangini seems more rigid like a teacher (ironic that he was teaching at Berkley when DT hired him). I think Mangini more effectively uses his entire kit to make each song have a totally different feel or sound where Portnoy seemed to have the same feel and sound throughout each album as opposed to each song. Just my $.02 but lately my favorites are Lost not Forgotten, A View from the Top of the World, Sleeping Giant, Barstool Warrior and one or 2 others.

Dude, you think this kit is big, you should check out Mike Mangini's kit. He is the guy who replaced Portnoy. I know nothing about playing music but peeps say Mangini is more skilled than Portnoy. he does look EVERYTHING look effortless. But that also makes it less interesting to watch. That may be but I liked DT's songs far better when Portnoy helped make and write them. And thats saying a lot because I thought he was a D.... the way he left the band.
