The KINKS are a very unusual, very BRITISH band. From YOU REALLY GOT ME, to WATERLOO SUNSET, to LOLA (contemporary of this song), to LIVING ON A THIN LINE, you'll find a wide range of music. If you like the humor in this song, check out Harry Nilsson's COCONUT. ("Put the lime in the coconut, mix it all up... I said DOCTOR is there nothing you can do, I said DOCTOOOR!!! He says to 'take two aspirin and call me in the morning!' ")

When I was older, in my early 20s, I asked my dad, what he thought was the best band or his favorite band, he said the Kinks. I thought that was really cool, because yeah they’re awesome, but they’re not my favorite band. And it made me think about it and I still think about it 30 years later. Like he could appreciate them on another level.

The song is a reflection of the Back To The Land movement of the hippie era, which was somewhat unrealistic at times, but still a good principle to aspire to - not unlike today's minimalist approach. The Kinks' 1968 album Village Green Preservation Society was seen by some as an English take on Back To The Land, in that it idealized the rural English village and the characters in it.

This is a Top 10 song from them, right up there with Celluloid Heros and Ducks on the Wall. The first Earth Day had just happened in April and the Cold War was still a threat at the time. Ray was talking about real things in the real world. This didn't get a lot of air play due to his dropping of the F bomb in the song.

Oh man….if you want to hear the rocking side of “The Kinks” please check out these 4 tracks off their live album (One For The Road) 1980 1) All Day And All Of The Night - “Live” at Rutgers University, New Brunswick N.J. March 1979 2) Low Budget - “Live” at Providence Civic Center, Providence R.I. Sept. 1979 3) You Really Got Me - “Live” at Lowell Memorial Auditorium , Lowell Ma. March 1979 4) Victoria - “Live” at Volkshaus, Zürich Switzerland Nov. 1979 ……these tracks were frequently played on Rock radio in the Boston area back in the early 80’s. I was actually in the audience for the shows in Lowell & Providence 🎸 ❤🔥 This hard rock version of The Kinks is my favorite ❤️🎸🤘🏼

I'll let everyone else recommend the hits, but I'll toss out Life On The Road (from Sleepwalkers) and Headmaster (from Schoolboys in Disgrace) if you want to check out a great deeper cut or two! I'd forgotten this one. Ray's songwriting is so counter cultural, taking humorous sideswipes at trendy fads and hypocrisies ("I think I'm so educated and so sophisticated 'cause I'm a strict vegetarian" 😅) without being preachy or boring. Their music obviously draws on rock and roll but it's also rooted in folk and music hall (vaudeville) traditions with his very British whimsy and gentle irony. Great that you're exploring deeper into their work.
