Hawkwind are not just a band...they are 'a way of life' .....they are 'the ongoing counter culture' (who had to stay largely underground as the MSM either refused to play their music or tried to pretend they didn't exist for many years)..and as Nik Turner (one of the original and most famous members) said a few years ago...''Hawkwind are not only the people who play in the band, they are all the fans as well'' ..in other words it's like one huge family / tribe of dreamers, musicians, warrior poets, dancers, New Agers, visionaries, revolutionaries, and builders of a brighter, more wholesaome, natural future. Great review btw, amazing to see they had a deep magical effect on this first listen....pity you couldn't have just kept going into the next 3 tracks too, as you would end up on an even more beautiful, magical journey of lyrical poetry and both dreamy and tribal (Opa Loka) sound scapes :) Everyone should have a listen to the music and lyrics of Hawkwind's golden years especially (as in all their work from the first album in 1970 to say their last appearance at Stonehenge in 1984...as this period is especially full of absolute gold, diversity of sound, and deep wisdom and of 'hope over fear' too ...enjoy the trip 🥰🙏✊👌✌🌍🌱🌻🌹

As a teen I was a huge fan of Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion books (of which there are many - the Eternal Champion exists in many different incarnations in many different worlds), so his collaboration with Hawkwind delighted me. Glad you're back with them again - they don't get enough love in the reactor community, so thanks to you and to Steve B!

Bizarre musical landscapes, pumping rock songs, Michael Moorcock, two drummers and Lemmy's final album. A masterpiece. The same year saw the arrival of vocalist and lyricist Robert Calvert. In this new incarnation, Hawkwind came out with Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music (1976) and Quark, Strangeness and Charm (1977), albums that saw a cleaner, clearer sound, as well as a rather more intelligible lyrical content. - The Rough Guide to Rock (edited)

My favourite Hawkwind album, absolutely brilliant...genuinely believe it's their most together release as all the songs fit the storyline, which can't be said of all Dave Brock's work, particularly the later Lp's. Magnu is the longest track on the album at 8+ minutes and probably my personal favourite, but Demented Man runs it a close second. The sheer body of work put out by this most influential yet still underrated British rock band is quite staggering and well deserving of a deep dive, as there really isn't any other band quite like them. But perhaps the most staggering thing is that Dave Brock at 82 and his latest incarnation of Hawkwind are due to start out on their latest tour in early/mid 2024 here in the UK...Obviously "Hurry On Sundown" doesn't apply to him, and long may that be the case!!

Assault and Battery, at this stage the band had two drummers, I remember this tour, Lemmys last album, he referred to the "drum mafia" in the band at this time, Lemmy left very soon and the band moved into a softer period, the end of days for me. One outstanding moment is the perfect sax outtro on Golden Void from original band member Nik Turner, he was soon gone too as Brocks grip on the band tightened.

I've seen Hawkwind a few times, most memorably at the Stoned-henge Free Festival late 70's and early 80s. Fantastic. They were all about mind altering drugs, acid, shrooms, except Lemmy who got kicked becuase he liked speed, the wrong kind of drug. The Moorcock books about Elric the Eternal Champion are old school, but pioneering. His books cover a multi-verse of hero's, Elric, Corum, Hawkmoon, Erekose and Jerry Cornelius, they are all basically different aspects of the same character.

This Hawkwind album opened flat to form a shield (I still have my vinyl album. The very best album that Hawkweed made was a live one called Space Ritual back in 1973. The whole set (two vinyl disks) almost plays as one continuous track. Without a doubt "Organ Accumulator" is my favourite track. Also, "10 seconds of forever" blends into "Brainstorm" and should be heard together, one after the other.

This was "Classic Hawkwind's" last Great album with Lemmy and their sound !! Sadly many Hawkwind music changes over the next decades never matching their Classic style of their 1970' to 1975' period. These two, one really are always in the setlist Live. The soaring "Mellotron" 🎹🎶during the Golding Void singing around (7:50) is so lifting and hits your Soul !!! So many little great Sonic parts in both songs with Oboe, Flute, Bass, Guitars, Synths, Mellotron, Drums, Vocals with the many effects it's just a Masterpiece of Classic "Space Prog" that only Hawkwind could bring !! Of course the Very Best of this era is "Space Ritual" Live give yourself a treat and fine some vintage "Lava lamps" colored mood lighting, your favorite beverage and Chair 🎧 and sit back and believe your at that concert in 1972' with the Amazing light show and Hawkwind playing Space Ritual one song into another straight through with their Spacey instrumental - Poet/Swazzle moments as (Hawkwind called them) throughout the show, just fantastic as they put you in their Fantasy Space Prog world sonically !!! I saw them only once during in 1974' during their "Hall of the Mountain Grill tour !! 👍🚀🎶🎸🎹🎤🥁🎷🎛🎼🛸

I agree with most of what you say, except 'the Golden years of Hawkwind I find are from 1970 to mid 80's . Yes they took a different direction after some line up changes in late 75 early 76, however the return of the mighty Robert Calvert in 76 gave us the most powerful and long lasting (and as relevant as ever today) lyrics of any band. And the music remained as diverse , and pioneering as ever.....Uncle Sams On Mars (massively powerful musically ,and lyrics that make it the most powerful enviromental song ever, whereby Calvert warns against people becoming mindless consumers and the horrendous foreign policy of the US government and the big corrupt corporations of the world whom have attempted to destroy communty and people's connection with Mother Nature)...then the magical layers and lyrics in songs like 'Infinity' ...these are just 2 examples of the many amazing songs they did from 76 to 79... Then after 78 / 79 they went into an even wider journesy with great music and albums such as Sonic Attack and Choose Your Masques and lots of excellent live output including Ghost Dance.

It would be interesting to know what the first song from Hawkwind you Listened to was? On another note, excuse me for pointing it out, I mean no offence but everything will sound much better if you place your headphones directly over your ears, with the thick wooly hat and all that hair inbetween you are denying yourself of so much clarity, Hawkwind sound even better unmuffled,

One of Steve Wilson's best remasters is 'The Yes Album' HFPA multichannel Blu-ray. The uncompressed 5.1 linear tracks (PCM) are simply stunning but one has to be geared to the teeth to properly translate it. (think 'Starship Trooper' in full blown surround...)
