The last Dire Straits video we did was a rousing success so our patron Patrick thankfull requested another one! So, here we are... this was such a sorrowful dirge to lost friends... Mark's guitar is absolutely wild and I am so glad you guys showed this band to me. I knew their radio stuff just a little bit but this? This is so nuanced and mournful... It made me a little sad but I saw the light peeking from behind the cloud at the end. Great pick pat.

This song was written by Mark after the Falklands war between Argentina and the UK in 1982 after his father remarked that the soldiers on both sides were like Brothers in Arms.....

Some of Mark's most beautiful, understated guitar work, just spine-tingling stuff. I was in Grade 8 when the Falklands War broke out, and I still remember feeling how horrible it was to see young soldiers on both sides losing their lives for a territorial pissing contest. One world, one humanity, one justice. ☮

He is not lamenting just his dying brother-in-arms, but himself. He dies. He is lamenting mankind. Though it is written in the lines of your palm, can we ever understand we are fools?

No one, and I mean no one, can make a guitar cry like Mark Knopfler. Many, like David Gilmor come close. But Gilmor’s is a slightly different style and tone. Mark doesn’t just play guitar. He makes love to his guitar and manages to wring every emotion possible from six strings in the process. With his writing, playing, and singing he is truly an artistic master in every sense of the word.

Glad you enjoyed this, but now, you need to see a live performance of this... the electricity, the passion and the genuine emotion is palpable... check out "Brothers in Arms" from the Nelson Mandela birthday celebration live at Wembley; he prefaced the song by dedicating it to 'the gentleman in question,' and saying 'one humanity, one justice'; and best of all they don't cut off his extended guitar solo in this performance! (BTW you know you are a guitar legend when Eric Clapton is playing backup guitar for you). Background: Mark wrote this song after a friend of his died in the Falklands war; it is written from the perspective of a dying Brit soldier realizing that he's not going to make it home, who thanks his brothers in arms, and bids them 'farewell'. Only Mark can make a guitar weep like that, gives me chill every single time. And that final line, "we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms," denotes a much more expansive implication/interpretation beyond any one conflict.

@@L33Reacts you can't beat their live performances. I'd recommend I Think I Love You Too Much from Knebworth '90 performed with Eric Clapton and You And Your Friend from On The Night, their final album. Oh and check out Money For Nothing from Music For Montserrat, an awesome charity concert performed at The Royal Albert Hall. Technically it's Mark Knopfler not Dire Straits, but Dire Straits keyboard player Guy Fletcher is there too as well as their last rhythm guitarist Phil Palmer... oh and Eric Clapton, Sting and Phil Collins!

They're not all playing guitar... only about 47 of them! 😃(Sting and Glen Worf on bass, Ringo and his son Zak on drums etc.) It also wasn't produced by Knopfler. The credit for that goes to Guy Fletcher, former Dire Straits keyboardist, Notting Hillbilly and current 96er, who is for all intents and purposes is Knopfler's right-hand man. Fletcher did a remarkable job managing to combine all those contributions from so many different artists. What an achievement!

When Dire Straits were great, they were *stunning* and my god this is magnificent. Knopfler's guitar work is so transcendent that it's easy to overlook how beautifully he sings it. His vocal is almost muttered, and determinedly unsentimental, which carries the poignancy of the lyrics perfectly. FWIW, I think it's easily the best song on the album. De gustibus non est disputandum, but I can't *stand* Money For Nothing or Walk Of Life.

I really enjoyed your pretty insightful reaction to this recording, thank you, but as with other like minded comments, I highly recommend you now watch one of the best live versions of this iconic song; i.e. Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms - Wembley 1988 LIVE Audio HQ Remasterize kzfaq.info/get/bejne/msCIn7ShlcevgIk.htmlsi=t8WNjkVgIBPOLBxH Just a little tip from an early KZfaq interview with (UK Radio DJ) Paul Gambaccini in conversation with Mark: I’m paraphrasing here, but in a nutshell, Marks says he’s always dubious about the ‘official’ videos as they (the record company promoters) don’t relate them to the actual songs (& he and the band have nothing to do with their production). In his opinion (& I heartily agree) it makes more sense to watch the Live Concert performances because they are the ‘real’ thing, (undubbed & with more content & atmosphere) which is about the musicians & the songs (MK wrote all songs & lyrics for DS & his Solo career, 300+ and still counting). Then with his deliciously wry sense of humour, he says these ‘official’ videos are only one step better than ‘Crossroads’!(a reference to a very old & unintentionally funny TV soap 😂) In the same video. He also remarked that in his opinion the recordings were never as good as they could be. Also, for me personally, just reacting to an audio recording on YT is bit of a non-event Mark Knopfler, was the acclaimed, lead singer/inimitable guitarist/prolific sole songwriter with Dire Straits for approximately 18 years, also ditto with his successful MK Solo career with his bandmates, the accomplished ‘96ers’ from 1996 to date, with their 10th Album released April 2024. Mark’s had a helluva musical career spanning across 5 decades, If you’re interested in learning more about this brilliant & beloved magical musician.
