I wore out my One of a Kind album during my teens Still have the vinyl LOL A great album beginning to end Try, “Travels with Myself and Someone Else” from it A pretty ballad Features a tasty bass solo from Jeff Berlin Jeff Berlin is probably THE top tier electric bassist that’s still out there. Criminally under-the-radar compared to some of his contemporaries A true bass educator. Check out his KZfaq clips As always, ya got great taste, son 😂

I can't believe I finally found a reaction of Bruford material. Everyone does Yes, Genesis, King Crimson and the like, but no one I've seen does Bruford. He took drumming to another level and just gets a passing mention. Those first 3 albums and then UK, my goodness, were incredible. Thanks for posting this.

I hope that someday you will go further and discover Elvin Jones from John Coltrane band. This is different kind of music but from that era everything was started. And of course more Mahavishnu Orchiestra. They were musically even better than guys from Frank Z.

Haven't heard this one before. Pretty cool! I recently discovered that Bill actively runs his own archival KZfaq channel where in the description he shares several anecdotes about his performances. Interesting stuff for those who are into that sort of thing!

I think this shows what Bill 'learned' from all his previous bands. These 3 albums 'Feels Good to Me', 'One of a Kind' and 'Gradually Going Tornado' were largely written by Bruford and Stewart with contributions from Berlin, Jobson and Holdsworth. Holdsworth had amazing timing to play across the solid rhythms performed. A lesson in syncopation. Other standouts are 'Forever Until Sunday' and 'Sahara of Snows'. Bill and Phil are favorite drummers.

Glad you got to this gem Lee, jazz fusion mastery, this is off the masterpiece "One of a kind", you also must check out from the album: Hells bells, Fainting in coils, The Abington Chasp & The Sahara of snow parts 1&2, all pure brilliance!! Jeff Berlin wrote 5G, he also wrote another bass centric Bruford classic "Joe Frazier" from the 3rd Bruford album "Gradually going Tornado", the bass work is phenomenal. Incidentally I'm pretty sure that was Dave Stewart soloing with that distorted synth in the middle of Allan's solo sections. Fantastic keyboardist. Happy reacting, cheers

The soloing starting at 3:16 doesn't sound like a continuation of Holdsworth, but a keyboard through a guitar distortion pedal, like Chick Corea used to do in the early 70's.

The keyboards are from One OF A Kind where this song was originally released. Holdsworth somehow gets his guitar to sound like a saxaphone. So luxuriant a piece in every way!

Nice reaction Lee FYI - I think you’ll find that after Holdsworth’s initial solo burst, the next solo section that kicks in at 3:15 is played by Dave Stewart on keys. Holdsworth then comes back in at around 3:55. Dave Stewart is a fabulous player but was often the unsong hero, as people focussed on the stellar names around him.

Oh, and I almost forgot to remind you about one of Bill's projects from 1999-2000 called B.L.U.E. or Bruford Levin Upper Extremities. Joing Bill and Tony are David Torn on "guitar" and Chris Botti on trumpet. Prog-Rock-Jazz. Songs from that album are: Fin de Siecle Etude Revisited Cobalt Canyons A Palace of Pearls (on a blade of grass) - super mellow Cracking the Midnight Glass Presidents Day

One more thing. Pat Mastelotto drummer for King Crimson and Stick Men did a side project called KoMaRa. It is some of the darkest jazz-rock fusion I've heard. Bill is awesome, but Pat is a effing badass! It is so awesome. It's a three piece band; a guitarist who also plays bass, and a trumpet player who almost always plays his trumpet through insane distortion filters so it barley sounds like a trumpet. A few songs to check from that album are: A Collision of Fingerprints 37 Forms Dirty Smelly God Has Left This Place Pasquinade Afterbirth

My favourite Bruford track of all time (and Allan kills it on this). Venture down the Allan Holdsworth rabbit hole, if you dare! Here is a live taster though, from his "Live at Yoshi's" album and the track is called "Fred" (one that Allan wrote when he played with Tony Williams). This is a perfect Jazz/Fusion album and full of stunners. You'll love Chad Wackerman's drumming (ex-Frank Zapper), it is amazing. Alan Pasque's electric piano playing is stunning and Allan's guitar solo is one of his best: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/huCHZtyr3cmbhI0.htmlsi=GqsRPDbkw-C1ktGk
