I really love that pause, allowing Hayley's voice to really shine in the song, more so than the actual version. And since he's never heard it before, he pretty much figured "alright, other instruments stopped playing, i'll stop too"

That style over the solo was really cool. Definitely shows off more, but still respectful of the guitar. From a guitar guy, it's really underappreciated when the drummer doesn't try to step on toes.

I was so surprised when I saw that they posted it. I'm the one that requested Dirk play Misery Business, but I didn't think Drumeo actually read their messages, let alone would listen to mine. He learned it extremely quickly. But I'm glad he did it!

Love your thoughts & enthusiasm going over these Drumeo blind attempts. Dirk is particularly good at these, & has a great outlook on getting to the stage where he can step in & lay down a usable pass with minimal time to practise. Great stuff. :)

Drumming to songs blind really seem to work quite nicely as a training tool. Have you ever watched The8BitDrummer (btw would be cool to have a react video about him)? He has got so much better at improvising beats and fills and just keeping up with songs on the fly trough the years

I'd love to see your reaction to either of the Larnel Lewis Drumeo vids - they were early in the current format, so for one they made a song for him without a drum track, had him listen and recorded his one and only attempt, and the other, he covers Enter Sandman with the drum track and have him try to replicate it. Both are pretty amazing, and I think you'd enjoy geeking out over his kit as well.

That pause where the drummer would be silent for a sec before going to a last chorus or (second to last) is actually not common in metal at all. Especially in thrash, speed or death metal the drummer usually gets no breaks. It's common in pop variants of many genres like pop punk or pop metal.. even drum n bass, to let the vocalist have a full solo moment like that as a "beat drop" moment. So I think he was actually trying to guess what this pop rock band would have done, but simply guessed wrong. In most metal genres the drummer is almost never silent unless you're trying to invoke a non-metal element like a choir or church organ or an acoustic guitar in the middle of the song, but it's pretty rare. Black metal does it a lot where the drummer stops playing for a moment to let the guitars and bass break into a separate melody, but usually then the vocalist is also silent.

It'd be cool to see you check out some of Dirk's original stuff with his previous bands like Soilwork, Devin Townsend, Scarve, Sybreed, etc. He's got a ton of play-through videos on youtube. Good on him for landing the Megadeth gig, but IMO when he was able to go full throttle with those other bands his creativity was really special. Also, he has a blast beat technique named after him (the "Dirk Blast"), which is just neat!

@@coversandcommentary for what it’s worth, I think you’ve improved tremendously in this area from where you started. I definitely get the challenge of wanting to comment while also not wanting to pause every 5 seconds, though the pausing never bothers me. And as I mentioned on one of your earlier reactions, you have a lot of interesting and intelligent things to say, so you *should* be pausing and talking throughout.

@coversandcommentary
@coversandcommentary 12 күн бұрын
The video did soar to 14k in 7 days. People want commentary and explanations about why drummers do certain things or what techniques are being used. Just “sitting pretty” is content thievery, and I don’t condone that. 😁
@akshaygopinath9114
@akshaygopinath9114 12 күн бұрын
@@coversandcommentary 14k is good, I'd still recommend an update on the technique breakdown and commentary portion (ex- Paramore react had over 15 pauses, that's a lot and a 25 min runtime) - do check out 'Tank the tech' channel as he does songs reaction, gear and tech breakdown with a good combo of minimal pauses, engaging commentary, occasionally sitting pretty and head banging to killer tunes... winning combo. check out his channel and could give you some new ideas.
@Wyl7
@Wyl7 5 күн бұрын
@@akshaygopinath9114 dude, Tank pauses plenty. Seriously, if you just want to hear the song uninterrupted, go listen to the original. But then again, I hate “reactors” that just sit and listen to a song while occasionally throwing out an ooh, ahh, or “amazing”. That’s “content” that has no purpose for existing.
