This is the song that introduced me to Tull, say around 1975-76. I had heard BUNGLE IN THE JUNGLE a few years earlier but never heard the band name until this one. The whole album is a treasure of great music.

This album is in my top favorite Tull albums so hoping you'll listen to more of it. It's so distinct in its modern medieval-ness. And it's perfect in Autumn weather. A Cold Wind to Valhalla, Black Satin Dancer and Baker St. Muse are standouts, but the whole album is a standout. Heavy rockers and exquisite softer songs throughput.
@L33Reacts10 ай бұрын
I will be tackling baker st. Muse for the next JT video. I really like the modern renditions of medieval music. It sounds... so foreign yet so right. I am descended from an ancient Scott clan. I have to be. I like the bagpipes WAY too much not to be descended of Scotland 🤣🤣

Barriemore Barlow was very highly respected in the ‘70 and deserves a ton of respect. John Bonham said that he was "the greatest rock drummer England ever produced". Jimmy Page and Plant considered him as one the the possible drummers to replace Bonham, but they ended up disbanding Led Zeppelin instead. He is certainly in the short list of top prog drummers from that era, with Bruford, Palmer, Collins, Bozzio.

Glad you did the studio recording instead of the live version. The live version is awesome, with Jeffrey Hammond in a striped outfit that camoflages his guitar, and Ian in a 16th century outfit with tights and a codpiece. But, the live version is cut horribly with half the song missing. So, now that you've heard the complete recording, you can watch the edited live version just to see their get-ups.

Hahah that sounds awesome I definitely want to see that 😄 yeah from now on I'll stick with the studio first. Maybe... I'll do the studio and live in the same video. That would be fun lol

The live version of this song off Bursting Out (1977) is a little faster and for me a better feel. Makes it more obvious that Barimore's bits are the forerunners of a modern blast beat. All rock drummers should know this song and Hunting Girl, for their contributions to rock drumming. 🤟🧙♂️🤟 Rich the Ancient Metal Beast

THE best Progressive-folk album ever made !!! Only my opinion of course , but the album starts with this , and concludes with the epic suite Baker St Muse/ Grace. And loads of scrummy yumminess in between such as Cold wind to Valhalla , and Black Satin Dancer. I rest my case your honour. A million listens later ( give or take ) , I don't see myself changing my verdict ! 😍
@gregjones86110 ай бұрын
Lee: Isn't this a great 3 part Tull classic? Part 1 is the minstrel music, glorious in its start-stop timing of the vocal phrases that the acoustic guitar, other stringed instruments (maybe you're right about the lute?) and the flute weave medieval magic to candlelight dancing shadows. Then Martin's blazing electric entry (he's a co-writer here with Ian!) to which Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond on bass and the amazing Barriemore Barlowe add even more firepower and we have the oddest proggiest Tull metallic sounds to date! Try counting thru this section if you don't agree. When the cowbell signals the 3rd part, I think the heavy rock is over at first, until the verses are distilled to 2 chord distortion slashes that are just.... righteous! Perfect metal, perfect sparse beat interspiced with wicked drum fills. A masterpiece for Martin and Barlowe, who John Bonham famously pronounced "the greatest rock drummer England ever produced." Love your reaction, and hey - side 2 of this album has a 16 minute epic you should check out.

The live versions with sound, almost always have crap sound. But the live album version (starting in the early 70's) are usually comparable to studio quality sound. They were often overdubbed in the studio to clean things up in post, but most still manage to convey the live feel and excitement. I highly recommend the live Tull album Bursting Out. It captures them at a very good period in their history and has great sound and excellent song selection.

Peaks in Tull's career: Aqualung, followed by the one-two punch of their prog masterpieces: Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play (for when you're ready to take a trip like you did with Topographic Oceans); and their Celtic Trilogy: Songs From The Wood, Heavy Horses and Stormwatch. What's great is you can find gems on all remaining albums they did from 1968 to 1982 like you just did.

Basically, you are of course right that studio versions of songs have more “fine-finishing”. But there are exceptions... e.g. "Close to the Edge". If I have the choice, I much prefer listening to the live album "Yessongs" (despite the poorer sound quality). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kMmbgMqVsb_OdJc.html than from the studio album. There's also a slightly weird live video of it kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eMl0iJCnztLLmZc.html but I prefer the album. Sorry, I missed the topic ;-)
