Thank you to our alpha patron Joel for this great duo pick... I am not a fan of clowns but they don't freak me out or anything... I promise. I had some preconceived notions about Barb and I still have some reservations but she sang that song very well. Very different compared to the superior version by Judy (imo) but it was still a great duo pick. I have more requests for these ladies so more is coming next week!

“Send in the clowns” is an old theatrical trope: when things fall apart on stage or the act is bombing, the best way to salvage the production is by covering over the disaster with jokes and amusements. Hence, quick! send in the clowns.

Judy Collins’ version was played on the radio a lot. She’s a folk singer mostly but has a lovely voice. Streisand has a great voice but different than Judy. Streisand is more of a pop music singer. She starred in “Funny Girl” at age 18 and the legend was born!

Yes, but it has a MUCH deeper meaning in the sense of this song, and how it fits into the musical. ALL the stuff that Lee skipped over about the characters ''having nothing to do with the song'' actually have everything to do with it!

Streisand is such a master of her own voice that expresses her connection to lyrics that is she’s talking to you. But you need to hear her when she is soaring because her voice flies out of this world. I love the subtlety of her vibrato. Yes, her early music- “Cry Me A River” is absolutely amazing. “Happy Days Are Here Again”- she owns it. Her “Funny Girl” performance was so amazing that no one touched that role for many many years. “ “People” of course and “Don’t Rain on My Parade” but one of my most favorites is “who Are You Now?”. “My Name is Barbara 1&2” came out of her tv specials: “He Touched Me” and the virtuoso of “My Man”. She’s a master of starting in a softer side and building to an emotional climax that grabs and won’t let go! Her later songs are mentioned here already Judy Collins is so pure and clear… like drinking spring water to quench your thirst. Very lyrical instead of powerful so she relies on her ability to soothe and draw in the listener. I find her “Wildflowers” album almost meditative. Favorite song on there are “Since You Asked”. I love her versions of Dylan songs and Cohens and I really love Randy Newman’s “I Think It’s Gonna Rain Today”. She has successes on the charts with Joni Mitchell’s songs and Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne”… the album “Who Knows Where The Time Goes” in collaboration with Stephen Stills is outstanding. He does incredible guitar playing on an electrified version of the folk song “Pretty Polly”. The title song of the album is an incredible deep song. So I hope you will explore her further.

A very good reaction. Judy’s vocals were exquisite. She was very moving, even with clowns gyrating behind her. It’s true, she has gorgeous eyes. Lee, I don’t think you were used to seeing a person with such a staggering presence as Barbra Streisand. The little shift of her arms was a childlike and relaxed physicality…. There really aren’t many people running around in our world with that kind of presence and power anymore. Robert Redford has a strength like that. Barbra’s voice can soar. I first heard Barbra when my parents played “People” in 1964. I was eight years old and thought she was singing “People who eat other people”. ! (“People who need other people are the luckiest people in the world”) Don’t Rain On My Parade Papa Can You Hear Me A Piece of Sky Somewhere are songs by her I think you would enjoy. ❤️

As you noted, it was written by the late great Stephen Sondheim for the stage musical "A Little Night Music". He said that he wrote it for Glynis Johns, one of the actors in the original production, because she had trouble singing some of the notes in his compositions. Which, to be fair, many actors find very challenging!

Wiki notes that this song is sung either in the "dramtatic style" or "lyrical style". The former is used when it's delivered by Desiree in "A Little Night Music", and the latter used when it's performed out of that dramatic context and the emphasis is on the lyrics and melody as a stand-alone piece. But this is Streisand, 'the actress who sings', and she gives us a version that is both. The song is beautiful and her performanc mesmerizing.

First time listening. Very informed as far as correct adjectives. Enjoyed very much. BUT, just a few things to remember. This song was 'Judy Collins's Song' - and beautiful. Here she was singing in the vicinity of her 'peak' recording prime. Now, Barbra was between 40 to 50, I believe, when she sang this at a concert. If you hear this woman sing in the say..60's She came on the scene just wailing away. Set herself apart from many and welcomed by the 'GREATS'!! Judy Garland, the ONLY' realized and invited her to do her show! 'Ethel Merman' was there also. She held her own and shined a bit brighter because she was 20ish and they were mot in their Primes. Barbra has been singing 60+ years. And still sings well in her concerts. If you do a 8 - 10 reaction to this woman? You will appreciate her and her voice just from what she CAN DO WITH HER TALENT! SINGER, ACTOR DIRECTOR, WRITER, PRODUCER!! Anyway, sycophants aside, LOL! From 60's Briadway music through the 80's movie 'YENTYL'- please watch and listen to her!!! All her movies with ALL the male celebs of the day. She outshines them, out sang them, out acted them... Anyway BARBRA is the best. PS - same here with her political posture, but talent is talent!!

Barbra sang this purposefully more nuanced and subdued, but that's why I like Judy Collins more -- I think she sang it as the song needed. Streisand singing "Prisoner" the theme song from the movie The Eyes of Laura Mars will reset your brain for what vocals should sound like.

If you just want to listen to the song for its pretty flowing sound and not have to think much about its context too seriously, then Judy's ethereal sound is the one I would choose when I'm in that mood. If you're up for listening and watching someone act their ass off, getting into the nitty-gritty meaning of the song, while also enjoying an exquisite voice, then Barbra's version is your go-to performance. The consummate artist. The actress who sings.

Others have explained the meaning of the phrase correctly, so I won't comment about that aspect, L33; but in the song, her relationship is tanking and she wishes there was an outside force (the clowns) that could bring light and laughter back into their relationship. But then, she realizes that the clowns are the two of them, although clowns in a different way, which makes the song incredibly sad. I want to cry every time I hear it. You should react to Ms. Streisand's song "Evergreen." It has no chorus, but it doesn't need one, it builds so magnificently. But, don't react to the video from the movie. Kris Kristofferson's vocals detract from the song, IMO. The studio version is much better, also IMO. ❤😎✌

I think both clips were from variety shows, a TV staple from the 1950s through the '70s. Now I think you see the meaning of the title "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes". Her eyes are a unique shade of blue, almost piercing. She even had a hit with "Amazing Grace" that began with her "a capella" voice on full display. Barbra is also an amazing singer. Both are still with us and still beautiful.

I saw an interview once with Stephen Sondheim and he explained the song and it was quite interesting. The term "clowns" in the earlier part of this song is intended to represent "jokes" or liight heartedness because the song is about a failing relationship and the singer is longing for things to "lighten up", but at the end when she sings "don't bother, they're here" she's referring to the two peope in the relationship, they "are" the clowns. The point of view of the song is from an actress which is why there's references to things like timing and lines. By the way, the use of clowns in the first video was incredibly irritating. The song is NOT about clowns. Clowns are used as a metaphor. It's Sondheim's one commercial hit to reach the pop charts. As for Streisand, I sometimes find her very irritating personally, but there is no question she is one of the greatest artists and singers of the 20th century. She is a true artist with a god given voice.

Ned from Spain here again Lee. The Judy video is a travesty, she looks and sings so beautifully and those bozos ruin it. It's a song for a person to sing ALONE and for Sondheim's lyrics to shine. The classic and bittersweet Swedish film by Ingmar Bergman " Smiles of a Summer Night" is about old loves, affairs, mistresses, illusions and making a fool of yourself over all of it. They are " the Clowns ". Stephen Sondheim was an amazing composer that you should dive into. He did the lyrics to Leonard Bernsteins "West Side Story" and after that did the music and lyrics to a series of hit Broadway shows. A real genius. Thanks Lee.

A few people mentioned Sondheim adding a verse for Barbra Streisand's version but he also reordered some of the verses so the emotional arc would come at the end of the song, which makes more sense outside of the original musical. I also saw several requests for Barbra's earlier signature songs. They are great performances, but I think that the style of the time she sang them in can seem dated for younger listeners. Barbra mostly sang similar type songs but her style of singing changed dramatically throughout her career. She became famous for her perfect diction, dramatic phrasing, incredible high notes and her loooong notes. You also seemed to notice she likes to sing on the downbeat. My recommendations would be One Less Bell to Answer ( an unbelievable duet with herself (70's) and Just A Piece of Sky from her passion project Yentl 1983 for which she was the first woman to write, produce, direct, and star in a major studio film. She was also the first woman to win a golden globe for directing the project, and remained the only woman to win the director's golden globe for decades. One Less Bell to Answer is great for the diction and clarity, Just a piece of sky the famous high and long notes. The last note defies comprehension kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fduWna6SpsyVhH0.htmlsi=w_roNF0w2pA1spTc kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iJ6Xq8irqKjXk3U.htmlsi=Tee7CuGL2HVXaPiu

Stephen Sondheim wrote notoriously difficult music to sing. He tailored this song for the voice of an actor by the name of Glynis Johns who passed away earlier this year. RIP Not known for her singing ability she nonetheless originated this song on the Broadway stage in 1973’s A Little Night Music. She won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Judy Collins owns this song in my humble opinion as she possesses a voice as clear as a bell. Pure joy! I find Barbra Streisand’s version to be nice but it doesn’t showcase her true vocal talent. There’s a long list of songs in Barbra’s catalogue that reveal what an exceptional talent she is. Been listening to her since I was 8 years old…even when I didn’t want to. LoL

Barbara is old school. The word you're looking for, Lee, is "swing", where you jerk the rhythm around a little--phrasing on steroids. Some singers add interest by "pushing the beat", starting a hair ahead of the beat. I'm thinking specifically of Alex Harvey, but I suspect others have used the effect as well.

This is good for your overall knowledge of pop music. This tune wasn't on AM radio the kids listened to. It wasn't played at pool parties. It's popularity is due to tv variety show exposure. Anthony Newly made this a hit years before, iirc. Now, that performer, was over the top compared to these versions. Comics of the time skewered the serious tone and imagery of a string of clowns on stage. An easy laugh.

I'm sure that my comment will get comments from others, with names of other female vocalists that will fit the bill of what I'm going to say. Hands down Barbra Streisand is the best female voice ever. I mean, someone has to be, so I say it's her. I know there will be people that will list some other great voices in argument. But I'm gonna show some guts and say this. They'll be wrong. And I'm sure they'll mention names that we all know, like I'm sure people will list women from Linda Ronstadt to Celine Dion and more. To be clear, she's not my favorite female vocalist of all time, I just find her voice to be incomparable. I myself personally lean towards Janice Joplin as my favorite female vocalist. Anyway, I just wanted to be clear that I didn't have any favoritism. And by that, I mean, it's not that Barbra is my favorite vocalist. And thus, I just believe she's the best ever. I'm willing to surrender to the fact that she's the best even if she's not my favorite, that's all.

What was that video? Could someone explain to whomever made it that "clowns" is a fucking metaphor. Unwatchable.

I grew up in a household that idolized Barbara Streisand so I’m very familiar with her. She is one of the greatest singers, male or female, that I’ve ever heard. In her prime her voice was magical. Also a great actress, producer, director. Unfortunately, in recent years, I’ve had a hard time separating the artist from her politics. She represents to me the worst of what is wrong with a society that places too much gravitas to what people in Hollywood have to say about the world we live in. The old saying, just shut up and sing never applied more to Barbara. Judy Collins is just as magical and I love her. Thanks Joel for this excellent twofer.

So because she believes in freedom and acceptance that bothers you? She weeps over your rejection. BTW, Judy is also an outspoken artist of civil rights, LGBT rights, etc. So I guess you will go back to Ted Nugent. Bye.

I knew someone would bring up her politics and it’s the first comment! Barbra has been liberal her whole life. People on the other side of the aisle get upset when she brings up politics, saying it’s better she not say anything at all. I’m guessing realbser1956 is a conservative. As they consider Barbra Streisand expressing political views "the worst of what is wrong with society."

Listen to Glynnis Johns singing this. She's an actress not a singer, and that makes it even more heart-breakingly poignant.

Judy is a great singer but her reading of this, emotionally, was badly off. Whereas Barbra hit the emotions bang on. You admit you don't know what the songs about, so read up about it, listen to it in context.

This song was written for Glynis Johns. Her voice is not sweet and clear. The song isn't sweet. Watch her and see what the song is really about.

I haven't seen this live performance with Judy and the clowns. Someone took this beautiful song, sung by a wonderful artist.... and ruined it (my opinion) with the ludicrous clown choreography. I'm hoping the Barbara version is better! Streisand is one of the best vocalists of my era (60s to present). Okay... nope. Judy's was better, even WITH the clowns. Why did Barbara have to make this a theater song and overdo it with so much drama! Not her best performance, unfortunately. Great reactions to both!
