well... this one was a doozy for sure. Peter Gabriel is one of the greatest creative minds and voices of this generation.... Which is insane because there are so many. I saw The Musical Box perform 'Watcher of the Skies' in Nov. and was stunned by the visuals. I see how very avant-garde Genesis was. Very effective. I don't know how they did it. @@rogerwebb7501true for the video, But the audio underneath Is from an unaltered live performance (even if it's from a different date). The new 4k version has the original audio, But it's basically a live in studio performance, so that version is actually mimed, But still Is a mix from different live takes.

Great reaction! I saw Steve Hackett last month with his band, and they performed "Suppers Ready." He plays an incredible solo at the end of the song that brings the house down. Your awe reminded me of my first time seeing Genesis -- It was just before Peter left the group during the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway tour -- I had never seen or heard them before -- I didnt even know they were a thing -- I just went to a local college concert hall and I had never seen anything like them before or since -- the WHOLE concert from start to finish was one non stop song that reached inside me and changed the way i experience music forever -- you could hear a pin drop with no clapping or cheering for the entire I believe it was 1 and 45 min -- I remember that I could not take my eyes off Peters preformance -- I do remember too that the rest of the band seemed to blend into the background and were never once highlighted -- when the last note was struck the entire crowd sat there for a couple moments like we were held in a spell then exploded into deafening appreciation for what we had witnessed -- I eagerly went to the local record store the next day and to my surprise and delight I discovered that they had so many other albums already there for me to enjoy -- I ended up with all of them ---

The Genesis Tribute band "The Musical Box" has been doing the Best Genesis tours for over 20+years know I've seen them about 13 times now and the do "Exact" tours with Gears, Stage set up and set list !! Tony Banks helped them many years ago to all the master tapes and filled them in on how they did it all in every way, the found and bought all vintage gear or had it made. Rickenbacker made them a Dbl-neck and early on Hackett loaned the Guitarist his vintage very rare Eco-Plex tape delay until he found his own !! So many things like this. Their home page has changed over the years but all the Gen member endorses what they do and Hackett and Collins said once the do our song "Perfect" and our line up was only together some 5yrs TMB has been around 20 years and perfected all our song !! Steve Peter and Phil have all brought their kids to their shows when the were young and sid this is what your Daddy did years ago !!! Lol The have many video on YT and I have the best ones save, just let me know I'll post them !! Over the years the do tous like they were so one years the would do the complete "Foxtrot" tour another "The Lamb" tour, then go back to the "Nursery" tour or "SEP" the are Just Amazing and it's just like I remember from 1973-75' like going back in time !! 👍✌ www.themusicalbox.net/ www.themusicalbox.net/bio.php?lang=en.... www.themusicalbox.net/dates.php?lang=en... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Musical_Box_(band)

Genesis were given the name in 1967 by an ex- Charterhouse pupil called Jonathan King who was a singer, songwriter and producer at the time, he produced their first 3 singles and the album Genesis to Revelation, the album was put in the religious section in music stores and only sold 649 copies. unfortunately In September 2001 Jonathan King was convicted of an unforgivable crime and sent to prison for 7 years.

@L33Reacts No touring member, just them 5. At the beginning Steve, Mike and Tony played guitars. Steve & Tony a 12-string. Then Tony left the guitar and played keys, while a little later Steve changed his. And some part Mike grabbed the 2 neck bass & guitar. Don’t remember if he played a normal bass somewhere in the song too

Live I think Mike usually added bass pedal notes while playing the acoustic (6 string), which he swopped for the Rickenbacker electric bass (twin neck) for the latter part - if I remember rightly he used the twin neck (incl. a Shergold) a bit later on. It's difficult to see whether he actually plays the bass pedals (for the first 5 mins odd) as we don't really see his legs - but you can hear those bass notes....probably this section is dubbed on from a live tape - widely rumoured to be the Rainbow concert of 73 broadcast by the BBC ( listening again to the Rainbow concert, I doubt this). One of the 'mistakes' of this version of the film is that we see Tony playing the 12 string after he has started to play the Hohner pianet N and Hammond (I think the 100L, but can't quite see)

Steve Hackett has re-recorded Supper's Ready for his 2011 album Genesis Revisited II. On this, he had different guest singers: Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth, Conrad Keely from ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Francis Dunnery from It Bites and Simon Collins (Phil's oldest son), who delivers a brilliant vocal performance on Apocalypse In 9/8. 😊 But Steve himself also provides lead vocals on Willow Farm. Genesis has always been a band of creative equals. I don't think it would be fair to say that only one person was 100% Genesis. The great thing about these guys, along with other members incl. Ray Wilson and Anthony Phillips, is that they never had a definitive album like Dark Side Of The Moon, Tubular Bells or something like that. The writing on each album, all the way from 1969's From Genesis To Revelation to 1997's Calling All Stations, is "too diverse", to quote Mike Rutherford. And to me, having such brilliant versatility is healthy. Peter didn’t write all the lyrics to the Foxtrot album either. Time Table was entirely by Tony, who, along with Mike, wrote the lyrics to Watcher Of The Skies. And Can-Utility And The Coastliners was Steve's lyric.

Last month I saw The Musical Box (a tribute band from Canada) do a full early Genesis concert. It was amazing. The details were crazy exact. They did the entire Gabriel's stick with all his stories. They even had the drummer wear Phil's white overalls. When they covered 'Watcher of the Skies' the blacklights, the huge projected 'eyes' above the band, the whole stage was magical, surreal, very avant-garde. That Genesis could do an entire concert by memory, including 'Supper's Ready' just blows my mind. They were truly unique.

You NEED to hear this live from 1977 - with Phil Collins singing. (It’s actually better - let the hate come). I interviewed Genesis in 1981. Suffice to say Tony Banks is not a fan of Gabriel’s claims about the meaning of the song. “Pete’s just trying to be mysterious. This is a simple song that equates Hitler with the Antichrist. The song is rather simple, actually. It’s full of World War II references.”

I saw same tour day after you saw. Venue was too big. Had a theater stage and far left and right seats had curtains in way. Gabriel had crew tie back after someone in audience complained. The entire upper half of hall was closed/empty. I only heard Visions of Angels, so I was gobsmacked.

Another great reaction and great choice of recording. In some shows Gabriel was actually lifted up on a wire at the end. I saw them perform this in London in 76 with Phil on vocals and Bill Bruford on drums. The inflatable flowers exploding from the side of the stage during Willow Farm sent the audience crazy.

I started hearing this stuff wafting out of study windows at my boarding school in the early/mid 70s and then from little mono tape machines in the junior study room, awful sound, on cassettes donated by older brothers. After a couple of years I could finally afford to buy the records themselves. I have never looked back. I have just shy of 17,000 files on my ipod. If I was told I had to delete everything bar one band I would keep my pre `75 Genesis. Even now after 50 years I actually got to see them just before Gabriel left, at the Empire Pool on the Lamb tour. My friend and I were 14. So by far the youngest out of 10,000 on the night ! A bootleg of the whole thing is here on this site.

If you want to feel what it was like to be at a Genesis concert, you should go to see a performance by the Genesis tribute band called The Musical Box. They are a French Canadian band that tour every year throughout the US and Europe. The band attained the rights to all of the costumes that Peter wore. Peter and Phil have given them their stamp of approval. They are awesome. You would think you were seeing Genesis back in the day. They probably come to your area. Check with the theaters where you live, you won't regret it!! I have been going to their shows since 2007.

Thanks for the reminder man.... WTF was the right response to his costumes. As a Genesis fan I must be the only one who doesn't rank this as his favourite? except for the magnificent ending that is. Firth of Fifth of course and Burning rope are the ones for me! Just checked out your reaction to The Musical Box. You must try the live version on The Midnight Special, the same quality, but with Gabriel's theatrics and makeup. Much less outlandish than in Supper's Ready and definitely adding to the performance. You'll be surprised!

You'll often see this film referred to as the "Shepperton" concert. Back in the early 70's it was crazy hard to film indoors concerts, usually because the lighting was crap, but also where do you put your cameras? Just watch the Yessongs film from the Rainbow Theater as an example. To get around this problem Genesis' management rented a soundstage at Shepperton Studios. That way they could set up as many lights and cameras wherever they wanted (and the lighting is still not that good, but no doubt the budget was tiny.) As I recall, they invited members of their fan club in to give it some concert authenticity, plus to give the band someone to play to (and to get some cheering on tape, which was 'enhanced' in post-production.) IMO the live version filmed for the French 'Melody' TV program in 1974 is overall better than this, although it's marred by some unfortunate video effects end editing (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fZl5o9l3vdCWias.html).

They're miming most, if not all of this....and there was no audience - the heads you see are cardboard cutout! Watch very carefully at the beginning, Steve, Mike and Tony are all playing acoustic guitars...so who's playing bass - no not Mike playing his foot pedals (although he does later). Secondly watch carefully the few 'fills' that Phil does that are shown close in, they're not what you hear! Peter's lipsync is so obviously faulty at various points too. This film made at Shepperton was considered not good enough for release when it was made. The sound was in fact the BBC broadcast live from the Rainbow 1973 show (Edit. Listening again to the tapes from the Rainbow, I now doubt this) saw this show twice but not at the Rainbow.

@@kbrewski1Yes, you're right about the 4k version being better, but I'm still not convinced by the audio. I've compared versions of 'live' Supper's Ready, and although the tape from Rainbow 73 broadcast on Radio is very similar, it differs in some respects - this Rainbow tape is often said to be the basis of the Shepperton audio track. The Genesis Museum (who claim only 50% is from the sound recorded at the sessions) says that Charisma (Genesis's record company) provided tapes of live concerts to use in conjunction with the film...but they don't say which. BTW There is abundant bass on the acoustic guitar intro, and having listened to several live versions, I think Mike normally plays this part on his bass pedals - it's hard to see even on the 4k version whether he is actually playing them, but they are certainly there....probably from a live tape. In updating the film, The Genesis Museum has taken out some of the obvious mistakes.....but is it in anyway Genesis 'live'?To see that, we either had to be there...I was 5 times in all! Or, take a look at the remastered 16mm Bataclan French TV concert of '73....all, more or less in close-up, and all more or less 'featuring' Peter!
@rogerwebb7501
@rogerwebb7501 6 ай бұрын
@@kbrewski1 I'm not claiming it's all mimed - in fact The Genesis Museum claim only 50% of it is mimed. And I'm certainly not claiming the Bataclan concert was....in fact I said that concert gives a true picture of what Genesis was like live back in 1973 - the first year I saw them in concert. I cannot see how anyone can watch this version of 'Shepperton' and think that it is not in many instances, another sound recording, just replay it and wait for the snare 'fill' in the episode after Peter sings ' I know a fireman who looks after the fire', you'll notice Phil doesn't 'play' the snare 'fill' at that point. This is but one of many examples of the miming (when I say 'miming' I don't mean to suggest that the band weren't 'playing', merely that the sound used in the edit was not that sound made when the band were filmed). Many of the most glaring 'mistakes' don't appear in the 4k version, (eg. the snare fill above) and to a certain extent is more 'believable' .
