i saw Bruce perform this song at the "No Nukes" concerts many years ago. it may have been the first public performance of this song. It was so beautiful, I was just stunned. I never forgot it.

I love that in the last chorus, he sings, "We went down to the river, though we know the river is dry...." What a great metaphor.

Three weeks later, you'll never see this but I'll say it anyway: Pick your Bruce songs largely from the "Live 1975-1985" album. It is...UNBELIEVABLE. The River. Racing in the Streets. Backstreets. Independence Day. Thunder Road. And, Darkness at the Edge of Town. Every one of them it exponentially better than the studio versions, and just might make you weep.
