Had my first listen to The Beatles yesterday... first listen to George Harrison today... What a perfect two day combo! This song so unexpectedly cool and groovy. The guitars were SO good in this.
Thank you to our patron ShiverHinge for this awesome pick... thanks bro you rock so hard.

BEATLES TRIVIA: This album was produced by Phil Spector and George Harrison. At some point during it's making Spector bowed out because according to him "George was such a perfectionist wanting to do takes over and over and over to get it perfect" (and why wouldn't he.....his first solo LP, he had a lot to prove).

George Harrison wrote this about Paul McCartney because he was frustrated with the arguing that was going on in the studio while they were recording the Let It Be album. As you will see in your Beatlles journey, John Lennon and Paul McCartney were the songwriters, though George was a brilliant and groundbreaking guitarist from the beginning and made great contributions to all The Beatles songs. George starting writing, and contributed one or two songs per album for awhile, all great Beatles songs, and eventually his songwriting blossomed to the level of John and Paul, and he was frustrated that he couldn't get more of his songs recorded. By the time of The Beatles breakup, Harrison had so many great songs ready to go, and that's when he recorded his masterpiece triple album, All Things Must Pass.

IMO the best solo album by a Beatle. “What is Life”, “All Things Must Pass”, “Isn’t It a Pity” are all standout tracks. Also look for the live “Concert for George” album. Eric Clapton sings an absolutely majestic version of “Isn’t It a Pity”, and Paul McCartney performs “All Things Must Pass” in a tribute concert a year after George passed away. And this song is performed as well.

The album cover was a dig at the Beatles. Ringo played drums on this. Bobby Whitlock on electric piano ran several YT segments recalling days with George and Derek and the Dominos. He mentioned John Lennon coming by (around the “McCartney” release time), and looking gobsmacked by the level of music George made as solo. George was validated by this record.

And just think, this song is a deep cut by George. This album is a classic, with great songs, but one of George's greatest songs was when he was with The Beatles. When he heard it, Frank Sinatra called "Something," which was written and sung by Harrison, the best love song he had heard in 50 years. "Something" is one of the greatest songs ever, and a totally different sound than your first Beatles reaction. I love George Harrison. ❤✌

George had the material for all of the songs for his triple-album All Things Must Pass in 1970, just after the Beatles disbanded, because Paul and John only allowed him one or two songs per album. George wrote all this stuff while a Beatle, but it just sat on the shelf. If you consider the one track that George did contribute to the Beatle albums, they were among the best. Something While My Guitar Gently Weeps If I Needed Someone Taxman Within You Without You There are more, but those are examples of his great craftmanship with the pen. Someone asked me decades ago what the Beatles would sound like if they continued into the 70s. I speculated that they would sound like their solo albums. George would've recorded this and My Sweet Lord as a Beatle. Paul would record the great Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey as a Beatle. Same with John and Ringo. Their individual efforts sound Beatle-like. Any opinions/oppositions? I'm open to discussion.

The best solo Beatles album - for me - is a three way tie between All Things Must Pass (George debut), Plastic Ono Band (John debut), and Ram (McCartney second solo album). Every song on all three is just freaking brilliant! So, yeah, all of this album, and all of the other two so get busy lol! You may want to finish up the Beatles, then do their solo albums because you'll appreciate the evolution, as in how they all got where they got.

This was a song written after being set free to be his own person, instead of a Beatle. You can hear the exuberance, the joy, being able to breathe without having to check if it impacts the other three. George could finally make decisions without having an argument about what, when, how much, where, with what. You should read through the lyrics. George was always very autobiographical, whether the song was about events or his own thoughts and feelings. Compare this to some of his earlier songs: "Love You To" hints at the environment George is in; "Isn't It A Pity", and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" were written with band tensions in mind. Even "Here Comes the Sun" is anticipatory of the band breakup coming within months. George could really write songs of despair and misery, but he also excelled at songs of jubilation and joy; have you reacted yet to "It's All Too Much"? Orgasmic.

Phil Spector was the producer who created his wall of sound. Many tracks sounded muddied but since have been cleaned up. George backed by Derek & The Dominos predominately. But the list of musicians goes on and on. Wah Wah actually refers to The Beatles. George no longer needs them. He had stored up so many songs over the years he couldn't wait to get them out. Consequently a double album with a third one of just jams.

There's a LOT of good tracks on this album - "I'd Have You Anytime", "My Sweet Lord", "Isn't It a Pity (1&2)", "Behind That Locked Door", "Run of the Mill", "Apple Scruffs", "Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)", "Art of Dying" - so pick a few of these

Helter Skelter, Revolution are rockers. Beatles covered so many sub genres of rock.

If you like live performances, check out Concert for Bangladesh, I think that is the first big charity music festival and organized by George Harrison in 1971, with many good friends joining him on stage.

You couldn't add a spoon into that production....what a great Beatles song this would have been if George Martin had produced it.

Sing any song melody in a wah wah mode. Is that common knowledge that it seems to work really well for getting a melody down, singing? IME, it works!

George typified the Apple Sound. He lived up to the Beatles sonic legacy and added to it. Only John never recorded an Appley or Beatley song after the breakup. Imo.

If you do more songs from this album be sure and play the 50th anniversary edition rather than the 2014 remastere. Same goes for Beatles albums. For the most part the super deluxe versions of their albums are better than the 2009 remasters. The modern remixes are geared towards modern audience. A lot of those Beatles albums have weird panning problems from when they hadn’t figured out how to use stereo to its full potential.
